let me know if you get in sodamouth! Are you going to a cc out of state or in state?

out of state so I know my chances are super low :(

Congratulations, sodamoth! I hope youâll get into Berkeley too. :)

sodamouth, did you get in?

I got into Berkeley after dropping out of HS (many moons ago). Man, what a feeling.

silentlysinging thanks for the post. I am now in a situation where I am just going to wait for spring and be done with it. I can apply everywhere for winter/spring, so I will do BYU, FSU, UF, and probably some others out of state (maryland, william and mary maybe).

Writing an appeal wonât do me any good at this point. I had applied for summer A which starts in less than 2 weeks. As for fall, I can still apply, but they told me I basically had no shot because they had already accepted pretty much all that they can. Now, I would probably have no problem at all getting into the university, just not for that major, and I am not going to change my major because of this to something like liberal arts economics. I feel that I should be able to choose my school, not the other way around which is why UF is just a backup no matter what. The recruiting at the B school is abysmal to say the least anyways. My job prospects after graduating will be considerably better coming out of BYU, esp for i banking.

So, basically my problem with UF has never been submitting the application, it was getting denied after submitting a great application. I can still apply for fall, but I will almost certainly be denied again. I have a much better chance next spring since they have not really started taking applications. I got my summer app in last minute, and if I submitted a fall one now that would be pretty much last minute. So, unless I want to go to maryland or ohio state, I pretty much have to sit out until january. I will apply to FSU and UF in about a month. I want to get my BYU application together and submitted first as it is by far my top choice of the schools that I meet the criteria to get in. A lot of schools are scratched from this possibility because I never took the SAT or ACT and most that require it even after an AA seem to want you to have taken it during high school only, so I canât just go out and taken it. Not to mention all of those schools are out of my prince range for the most part. I could go to an expensive school, but I donât want to when I know I can go to BYU and come out relatively debt free and still get a top notch education with excellent job prospects. I do know a VP at goldman sachs in jersey city also, and he told me I will be in good shape if I come out of BYU with a high GPA, because they have such great recruiting. Not to mention I think he may be of some help when time comes to try and get a GS internship.

UF is also going heavily for out of state more than usual to get the extra tuition, and that screwed me too. I did everything I should have had to do and more, but whatever. I am completely over it, and very excited about the possibility of going to BYU, and it will be a welcome experience. I would just live at home while going to UF, and my performance might suffer because of so many outside distractions. I probably need to get exposed to living on my own before I have to for work purposes anyways. As much as I love this state (I am a third gen floridian), it seems to be going downhill.

My econ professor is going to help me out a lot this summer. He is going to proof my paper for byu and any other colleges that need them, proof my resume since I am going to need a job if I am out of school until january, and is setting up a summer reading list for me to do, and will take an hour each week to go over what I read. It is going to be economy related books/magazines so that I get a better understanding of how it works in the real world instead of just knowing the principles behind economics. I think this will be good for me too. I think I may be better off taking this semi long break from school instead of just going every semester without a break like I was doing as long as I do something productive while I am off.

As far as everyone in this thread getting into these great schools by transferringâŠI think so much of your chances has to do with major. The fact that I picked an extremely competitive major is not helping me much (or other business majors either). I am just glad I found a great oos school I can probably get in that will allow me to transfer straight into their business school. So many of the other colleges I would probably get excepted to have different prerequisites. I took prerequisites to get into UF, and many, many OOS schools are much different in their required prereqs. Because of that I would have to just get accepted to the college first, finish up the required prereqs, and then try to enroll in the business program which is not even guaranteed, plus the cost of these schools are mostly very high since they are either oos or private. Unless you can get a very good scholarship cost should be a major consideration for everyone going to a school with 30k plus tuition, or even 20k, because I doubt anyone want to graduate with 50k in debt.

Congratulations!

Amen hermanns! Best of luck to you!

Well, good luck with everything, hermanns, and good luck with BYU! I realized youâd already submitted an app/been denied; my situation with FSU was somewhat different, just also mostly caused by awful budget issues. I didnât realize youâd applied for summer though, or that youâre not that into the idea of UF anymore, anyway. It seems like you can (and will) do better! It seems you have a good head on your shoulders. Despite the lack of standardized testing, even in such a competitive major, Iâm sure youâll be successful regardless of where you end up.

:)

I agree with everyone, best of luck to you Hermanns! Got my fingers crossed for you!

{I went to a private high school, I got a 2.6 GPA with a decent amount of ECâs. I somehow got accepted into University at Buffalo (fairly competitive with 25,000 students) with my crappy record. Now Iâve been there 2 years, have a 3.89 GPA, and I am now setting my sights on Cornell in the fall.}

congratulations JDC42 on getting into cornell!

I did not have the best high school record. I really did not put in the effort I should have. I did not do badly, but I should have done better. Senior year, I watched friend after friend get into Ivy League Schools while I went to a school I was certain I would be miserable at. However, I did not let myself get down, and decide to transfer right away. Furthermore, I knew I would be spending at least a year at my school because I would have to build up a college record. Needless to say, last summer I decided to make the decision to transfer. I worked my butt off first semester to raise my GPA. So far Iâve been accepted to UNC and UMich. I expect to attend UMich unless I get into a school, which I wish to go to more. You just need to work hard, and things will happen.

I barely made it through high school and graduated late.

I started at one high school and did well the first year (3.8 GPA). But then I fell into the wrong crowd during summer, so I was sent to live with my dad for 3 months during my sophomore year. I hated it so much that I ran away from there, back to my momâs city. She allowed me to move back in and go to the school of my choice. However, it was the âparty high schoolâ and I decided to only attend two classes every day: English and study hall. I got mostly Fs that year, not including the B in English. Thank goodness I was smart enough to stay in English class as 4 years were required to graduate. Junior year I went back to my original high school, did OK at first, but for some reason was allowed to take only a 1/2 day of classes. The administration was really dumb, I believe they thought I was a senior. My friends had a different lunch hour than I did, so in the end I only had 3 classes per day. Obviously not enough to earn enough credits to graduate! Plus, I just passed the classes I did take with Ds and one C.

Senior year, ALL of my friends had either graduated or dropped out. By then I knew absolutely no one in my immediate high school. (I was kind of a weird kidâŠok, I still amâŠbut I really didnât fit into my school.) I also started panicking because I only had about half of the credits needed to graduate and something like a 1.7 GPA.

So, my friend told me about the alternative high school where she was taking home study classes. I signed up in January. The classwork was a joke - mostly workbooks like you would find in grade school - and I breezed through them and the required tests with A grades. I was able to make up my 2 years worth of missing credits by August, took the GED and graduated (with a real diploma) with a 3.0 GPA.

I only took two AP classes in sophomore year for a month or so and never took the SAT. I did take the ACT and got a 24 (this was 20 years ago, I think the scoring is different now), which was a bit better than middle of the road. I never even considered college, although now, I think I would have been accepted at my state school, U of Utah. Rather, I moved out of state and started working my way up the career ladder, and I think Iâve done very well, considering.

Flash forward to the past 7 yearsâŠI started taking classes at a CA CC, mostly because the cost was/is so low. I couldnât justify NOT taking classes. I didnât really have a goal, but kind of thought I would transfer eventually. I kept high grades, my GPA is 3.96, while working full time and still living life to the fullest, and finally, after 7 years of community college I have been accepted by UC Berkeley to finish my BA. I really never, ever thought I could even be considered by Cal, so I am tremendously happy today.

Congrats thatgirltoo!

Oh, I just want to mention that I didnât get low grades in high school because I was incapable of high grades. I got low grades because I hardly ever went to class, and I never really did any work. I breezed through any of the work I did do, it was all very easy. I felt it was beneath me. For one English class I only turned in one paper, and I got a D for a passing grade that semester just based on that paper (on which I earned an A).

Thanks suddenquiet!

thatgirltooâŠyou are my hero. I am a senior w/ a crappy h.s. record becuase of the same reason you mentioned. Anyway I am going to Clarkson University in NY and want to transfer to Berkely too. Congratulations!

If you have any advice i would really appreciate it in terms of structuring the application.

CONGRATS!!!
wow wow wow!!
good job
all due to self-motivation and hard work!

Congrats to everyone who got into their transfers!

(Iâm also bumping this thread :P)

Went to a community college, 5 years after HS (terrible senior year)âŠgot all possible awards, recognitions, All-state, All-USA naming, honors degree and landed the JKC Foundation Transfer Scholarship! After that I enrolled in a small liberal-arts school, majored in 2 fields, got again all awards/recognitionsâŠand landed, again, the JKC Foundation (now Graduate) Scholarship! I am now at Johns Hopkins SAIS and I can honestly tell you, sky is the limit!

HoT

PS. I got into Cornell, GTown and University of Miami coming from the CC but didnât have enough money to pay for it (even with the JKC scholarship). I ended up at a small school where I was really happy and in touch with the community and professors (got great recs for the grad school). As for the stats, CC 4.0 GPA, Uni 3.9 GPA. I got my eye set on the Harvardâs Kennedy School of Govt for my PhD!
