Of the old musicals, I like Oklahoma best. Our wedding first dance was to “Out of My Dreams”.
Seeing Grease on stage is interesting if you’ve only seen the movie. It’s raunchier, for a start, and much more evenly balanced between all the kids instead of headlining Danny and Sandy.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is always a good time. We once saw it with Donny Osmond.
All time favorite musical, though, is A Chorus Line.
@Marilyn A Chorus Line is my all-time favorite as well!
We have a theater company here that does Broadway musicals in concert. It’s a refreshing way to see a show. Last season’s highlight for me was The Who’s Tommy. That was unexpected. This year they’re doing My Fair Lady and Carousel, among others.
We have been enjoying seeing the touring shows as well. I actually like it more than going into NYC. I can get much better seats for a whole lot less. The touring shows the theater we go to has hosted in the past few years include Hello, Dolly!, Rent, Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, A Chorus Line, Book of Mormon, Chicago, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and the one we are most looking forward to right now - Beautiful, The Carole King musical.
I would love to see some of the classic older musicals again like Fiddler, Gypsy, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Carousel.
It’s rarely performed, but the musical Two Gebtlemen of Verona is lots of fun.
Good musicals with fun humor (although many of these include poignant and moving aspects, as well as humor):
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
My Fair Lady
South Pacific
Fiddler on the Roof
One thing about Something Rotten: in that show is a musical number in which you get a little bit of a lot of the shows mentioned here.
I loved a Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. It was just so funny and different.
Try some local college or even high school productions. They can be great (or awful but usually only $10 bucks) and bring back a lot of memories. Thoroughly Modern Millie, Damn Yankees, Cinderella can get your toes tapping.
Tickets for Hamilton are going for $500/pair for the regional show. No thanks.
I’m looking forward to John Legend in Jesus Christ Superstar on tv on Easter.
Highly recommend Waitress. Some raunchiness, some tears, great show though.
If you’re looking for a quick fix - “The Greatest Showman” is very entertaining. Not live theatre, but still a good musical.
Another plug for “Legally Blonde”. We had low expectations for this, but it is fabulous & has become a favorite.
Ah yes, I forgot about A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder & Legally Blonde. Both were great!
Nice to hear good review of Waitress. That’s in my series next year.
