SUMaC 2012 - Do I stand a chance?

Hi everyone!
I’m thinking of applying to SUMaC 2012 next year.

My profile:

Public school, no math/science club/honors classes/AP available
Have been accelerating in Math & Science on my own
Report Card 20s (best grade) on all subjects, year GPA also 20, top of class
Bronze medals in National Math Olympiad, two consecutive years (8th & 9th grade)
WISC-III 99.6 percentile
English CPE grade A, German ZD grade zehr gut
Extra curriculars: basketball team, chess & rubik’s cubes, literature
Low income family <25k, applying for financial aid

Q1: Assuming I do well on the entrance tests, do I stand a chance of getting in?
Q2: Would taking the PSAT/NMSQT improve my chances of being accepted?

Thank you all in advance!
Good luck to everyone applying!

I’d say you definitely have a shot!!! I attended last year and it was the best thing in the world ever ever ever. i also had a lot of financial aid.
there’s not a real formula for being able to get in
the best advice I can give you is to do your absolute best on the application exam, and write out all the work you do with explanations of your thought process. if there are questions you can’t solve, show all the work that you were ABLE to do and describe the obstacles you ran into that may have prevented you from solving it. i did not complete the entire exam, not even close, but I still got in. I think it was because I tried.
sumac is the best thing in the world…
i’m going to apply again this year so fingers crossed fingers crossed fingers crossed!!!
best of luck to you. the application comes out on the 25th, as I’m sure you know.

HEY!
I am thinking of applying but I am not sure that I’m smart enough :frowning:
I’m in advanced pre-calculus in my sophomore year. The people on college confidential seem to think that the AMC is pretty easy, but I think it’s extremely hard. Should I just try and see if I can get in??

Thanks!

Sounds really stimulating, academically. But i also want to enjoy my summer…socially. Is Sumac diverse? Is their ample freedom?

It’s been quite a while since I posted this, so I had actually given up hope that anyone would answer my messsage, until today when I spotted your reply. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such encouraging words! Best of luck on your application too!

I’ve applied this year too. The questions were pretty manageable, and I guess the same holds for everybody, so I’m worried about my selection chances, given the low intake. How many did you get?

when will we know more about the decisions?

I think we will get our replies by the 18th. This is for any former SUMaC students or if anyone else knows, do we get our replies on the allocated day on the website or do they start coming out before?
Moreover, what did you guys think about the entrance test. I personally thought it was challenging and also, what quizzes and extra things have other applicants done? And how confident is everyone?
