SUMaC 2020

no it isn’t the temporary pin number. you can try hitting “forgot student number or password” and they will email it to you. i wrote my number down when i signed up.

Thanks . I tried “forgot student number or password”. It is not working.

Accepted! Session 1 4-7PM.
Honestly pretty surprised, I didn’t have high hopes for getting in.

Some of my specifics:
Rising junior, current sophomore from the Bay Area
Math coursework: AP Calc BC (freshman year), Multivariable Calc + Diff EQ (sophomore year). Also took linear algebra and a course on graph algorithms online.
1 year AIME qualification

Talked a fair amount about CS on the application since that’s what I’m primarily interested in. Mentioned specific topics in program 1 (i.e. cryptography) that have heavy applications in CS.
I don’t think my solutions to the problems were absolutely stellar though, and I wasn’t able to complete a couple unfortunately.

accepted! Session 1 4-7 PM as well @gloriazhu :).

details about me:

current sophomore, bay area
AP Calc BC this year + participation in math circles and clubs (no competitions or anything_

also interested in CS so I talked about that + my passion for math from a young age. Honestly thought I wouldn’t get in because I didn’t have 30+ page solutions like people mentioned but I’m so happy I got in!

accepted :o Session 1B (is that 4-7 pm?)

Hi!!!

Accepted for topology program!
(International applicant, from Moscow)

Entrance exam was pretty cool except for 6-7. I wrote pretty strong solutions, but I’m sure there are some flaws there. Especially in 6 c, I guess

Background: female, international

TOEFL : 98/120 computer based

Top student in one of the best schools in Russia. I study in a mathematical class, so we have like 22 hours of math classes per week.

GPA: 4,92/5 (one 4 in Russian, isn’t a big deal for American camp)

Class rank 2020: 1/20
2019: 1/395
2018: 1/395

I am a winner of two international math olympiads (Not IMO), nearly 17 state ones (they give an opportunity to entry any university in Russia). Also the best result in Bauman STU Olympiad out of 2 thousand participants. Honorable diplomas from Ministry if Education. School three times “leader” contest winner. Math team captain.

Curriculum (total 20 hours of math per week):
Calculus: 2 hours (1,5 years)
Algebra advanced: 4 hours
Geometry advanced: 4 hours
Olympiad math: 6 hours
Educational and research practice: 4 hours

We also have “educational and research practice” class. We study advanced undergraduate level math like quaternions, topology, projective geometry and etc. so I have a background for this themes.

I also had been teaching pupils from 5 grade in a summer camp (simple Olympiad math).

Participated in 4 mathematical camps before SUMaC.

I am also doing a research on a topological topic with a professor from NRU HSE (one of the best unies in Russia), so I have read several books in this theme and I hope to continue my research at SUMaC! (My essays was mainly about this)

I’m a founder of women STEM club at my school. I’m currently writing a book (more like a graphic novel) about eminent women scientists. This issue is not discussed thy well in Russia, so I hope to make this situation a bit better.

My recommendations were pretty strong (from calculus teacher/curator, current algebra teacher and previous algebra teacher (I know him for several years and I am sure that this recommendation was brilliant))

My essays were good (I hope so). SUMaC was my dream, so I was polishing my essays everyday not to forget anything! I still can’t believe that this is true! I can’t describe how happy I am.

If there are people who are planning to study topology this summer, I would be really happy to contact with you! Maybe we could make a chat somewhere or smth like that

Got waitlisted. Does waitlisted mean rejected or do they choose some people to waitlist??

got in as well
program 1 session 2 (anyone???
female, asian, rising junior, international applicant going to boarding school in the U.S.

Question: did they expand their admission this yr? since there’s 3 sessions for program 1

accepted! Session 1 4-7 PM as well @gloriazhu @coolkid0 !!

some background about me:
international student, currently in my junior year in HS
I did fine on the entrance exam apart from 6b and 6c
sat: 1590
i think i’m in the top 5 for grade-level ranking at a very competitive school
three year AIME qualifier (although I couldn’t do it this year because of covid-19)
wrote a few articles on STEM topics

btw same question as @nancii: did SUMaC expand their admission since it’s online this year? on their website it says that the total number of students per year is restricted at 40 max, but I don’t know if that applies to the online curriculum

@seanyoon777
waitlisted means you still definitely have a chance. some people might choose to not go to SUMaC this year or choose other summer camp options over it, so that opens up space for some waitlisted students

i think they def expanded
i’m assuming that 20 ppl will be in a zoom meeting at once (meaning that program2 is the normal 20 ppl but 1 expanded to 60(? accepting more rising seniors??

also how did they decide who goes to which session?? my first choice was session 1 4-7pm but they put me in session 2 8-11 lmao

is there a fb group/chat/something else for those going this year? this forum is the only way where i can find people that are going lol and i can’t PM anyone either

lol should we make a discord server or something?

@gloriazhu yes plzzz hahah

Discord yes please yes!

oh oki but do they tell everyone rejected that theyre waitlisted or do they have different emails for waitlisted ppl and rejected ppl?
