In NYU Steinhardt you will be earning a Bachelor of Music Degree (BM) in Vocal Performance with a concentration in Musical Theatre. You will be taking some music classes that are required of all music majors, classes required of all vocal performance majors and classes that are specific to the MT concentration. Voice lessons are given by professors who will usually teach both MT and Classical students. Your repertoire will be primarily MT, but you will also have some exposure to classical music and art songs. Dance and acting is included in the curriculum, but the focus is much more on voice and interpretation/ performance of songs. As part of the senior recital you will sing some art songs, some musical theatre songs (pre-1990) and will perform scenes from a musical you select
with a cast of your choosing.
Thanks everyone for all of the great info. My D’s application and audition materials are DONE (thank God…that’s a giant monkey off my back) and submitted for Interlochen. Now we wait. We are also planning to submit for TPAP. Thanks to all of you who suggested it. I figure we can use the audition videos from Interlochen and then add the other piece which is the original work. Question for those of you who have kids that did TPAP, what did they do for an original work? My D’s biggest strength is voice. She just scored highest of all freshman girls Saturday at solo and ensemble and is off to States! Her first ever experience with S and E and did a piece all in Italian! She is NOT a classical vocalist so it was a challenge. In any case, as an FYI, she did a very short very simple dance/movement video of about one minute for Interlochen. She has never taken a dance lesson in her life. :-S Hopefully they don’t expect too much there!
I plan to use her vocal song performance videos, her one minute movement and her monologue that we recorded for Interlochen for TPAP as well. We just have to add a personal statement and an original piece. She has written lyrics for music for quite some time and plays the ukelele so I think she may put them to music and perform it.
How long has it typically taken to hear back both from Interlochen as well as TPAP? Interlochen has a Feb 1 deadline for priority and TPAP is Feb 13. Thanks everyone!
My son had written some original piano music for Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night… to go along with Shakespeare’s poetry. He performed that as his “original” piece. He auditioned in person, so he was able to have nice conversation about his music/songwriting. He also self-accompanied for his song… which was a pop piece. He played ukulele. I have no stats on how many are accepted from live auditions vs video. I do know that they are looking for personalities as much as talent. They are building a “company”… so if you can possibly get to a live audition instead, I’d highly recommend. Interlochen was a very quick reply… a week or so?. TPAP notified in early March, I think??? They had a specific notification date. My son auditioned for TPAP at Unifieds… we have friends in St. Joseph, MI, so we stayed there on Sat. night and drove into Chicago on Sunday morning. We got a great parking rate at the Palmer House for the day ($15), he attended the dance call in the morning, did singing/mono in the afternoon and then we drove home. It was a nice day… and gave him a ‘preview’ of what Unifieds is like.
Great info thank you. No unfortunately we can’t make the live audition at all. My son performs that day in a tri district concert and it’s his last one, he’s a senior and off to college so I can’t miss it.
@MTmom2015 when did your son audition for Interlochen? As in what month? Did he audition for the 3 week MT workshop or the summer intensive?
He auditioned in person in January at the Detroit Opera House. It was for the 3 week workshop. It was on a Tuesday night, or something??? They were holding a bunch of Interlochen auditions that night… instrumental, dance, theatre, etc.
Yup they just did that. We couldn’t make the live audition. It was Jan 8th I think. He heard a week later? Wow. I was told she wouldn’t hear until mid February likely after the priority review date has passed on Feb 1. Did he go to Interlochen for the 3 weeks?
He went to TPAP instead. We couldn’t swing two workshops and TPAP had more of the philosophy he wanted. Had he not been accepted to to TPAP, he certainly would have done Interlochen. I’m assuming you’re a Michigan person? Have you looked at Take it From the Top at MSU? My kids have gone for 3 years and love it. It is only a week… day camp-style, but they learn a lot and love the staff/people.
Yes I have and we plan to do it based on where else she may or may not get in. We are in Michigan so Interlochen is ideal for a variety of reasons. We are right here at MSU so that’s easy! Fingers are crossed she gets in at Interlochen
Um, I just want to point out that Michigan State University (which is apparently getting a BFA MT program) and Montclair State University (which already has a BFA MT program) both use initials MSU. Heads up. This can get confusing.
Just to address the TPAP original piece… To contrast what @MTmom2015 's S did… My D choreographed an original tap piece… Not long… I think it was about 45 seconds (a high energy 45 seconds!). So, you can do just about anything for that requirement. My D auditioned for Interlochen the year before via video submission and was accepted… So I don’t think finding a live audition location for that is crucial. (She applied and was accepted to both the one week and the three week… But opted to attend BTP that summer instead.)
Ps. I first met @mtmom2015 at that TPAP audition nearly a year ago… And our kids ended up being flight buddies to North Carolina and have a lasting friendship! (As do we moms!)
@kategrizz thanks for the scoop! I’m learning so much on this thread not the least of which are a bunch of new acronyms! What’s BTP???
BTP = Broadway Theatre Project. They are doing a new program this summer with Norwegian Cruise Lines - BTP at Sea. You will train at their creative center in Florida just as their ships’ casts do then spend a week learning and performing on a cruise.
@SpartanDrew - check out the Big List of Summer Programs - it’s a pinned thread near the top of the forum. It was JUST UPDATED - and has info and links to a whole myriad of programs.
Can middle aged women who belt sign up for this BTP at Sea??!!!
Hahaha! Love it @GSOMTMom!! Thanks @kategrizz I’ll check it out. Fingers crossed for INterlochen. They said we would hear late February. Ugh I can’t stand waiting that long! Hope she makes it in. She’s just a freshman so I’m glad we are getting on all of this stuff now!
Daughter decided to do live audition in Chicago this coming weekend for TPAP. We have heard wonderful things from several alumni!
@crc500 best of luck to your daughter. I think we may put all our eggs in the Interlochen basket for this year. We are planning to do a family vacation during the time that TPAP is happening. Really hoping we hear something in early Feb!
@endlesswonder Since you are in Colorado, have you looked at the summer intensive at The Colorado Springs Conservatory?
Anyone settled on summer intensive yet? My D was accepted into Arts Bridge and BTP. She choose BTP.
