Summer Intensives Ballet

My girls were very much like @snowball’s D. They danced quite a bit in college, but they were not dance majors.

Technique and style were important to my kids’ ballet teacher at home. She was very much into Balanchine and classical ballet. She used to complain to me about having to spend months in breaking her students’ bad technique after they have been to a summer program (arrgh, how their hips would turn in trying to lift their legs higher). She didn’t allow her students to do modern/tap until they were advance students (she had a lot of rules).

I would check with your D’s ballet teacher to see which one she would recommend (closer to how they teach ballet at her studio).

@oldfort my daughter’s home teacher was the same way! Actually, no one left for summer programs until my daughter and a couple of others left one year. You would have thought they spent the summer with no dance training; he insisted they were trained improperly, and would never amount to anything as they lost everything he taught them! Again, my daughter was not going to be a professional ballet dancer, so it was nice for her to experience other styles and have a somewhat typical summer camp experience, even if she was still at dance all day.

Registration for many SIs might be closed. CPYB being an exception. They take everyone until they run out of housing. You should be on Ballet Talk for Dancers, there is a wealth of information there, moderated by staff who know the ballet world inside and out. Good luck!

@Mimi2018 in our area audition tours are just getting started, so I doubt all the intensives are full. Last year my daughter auditioned from late January to early March before choosing her intensive.

I highly recommend the School of Richmond Ballet’s Summer Intensive in Richmond, Virginia. The company, Richmond Ballet, is the State Ballet of Virginia, and the affiliated school has been around 45+years or so. Many teachers are internationally trained and/or raised. Information is on the website: www.richmondballet.com, under "school’ and “summer programs”. The summer program is nurturing, the out of town girls and boys stay in a chaperoned hotel right next door, there are field trips on the weekend, with three meals a day provided and laundry available. The training is top notch but nice smaller classes so tons of individual learning and a very supportive environment. There is a show in the beautiful historic Carpenter Theater at the end of the five weeks.

@milgymfam- Ha! You’re correct. I’m showing my age and my daughter’s too… way back in the day, one had registration deadlines for the auditions.

Anyway, I didn’t mean to imply the intensives themselves were full, but that registration for certain audition locations/dates might be closed.

Thank so much for all your advice. It has been very helpful!
