@abasket She asked if I pay attention to detail, she asked where I lived in relation to the restaurant, she asked me about how I would transition seeing that I have no experience, she asked about my availability (my mom scheduled two vacations for us this summer >:( ughhhhhh) but I told her aside from those vacations, I can work any day and any time, and she asked asked me about how I felt being open and talking to customers. I’m not sure they are hiring more than one person. The restaurant hasn’t had it’s grand opening yet and it just had a soft opening this week, so I’m assuming that they have multiple spots. Hopefully they do! I have graduation practice all next week and then I leave to go on vacation next Friday for like 2 and 1/2 weeks.
Well, best of luck to you, but when do you start school in the fall? If you are not going to be available until mid-July it’s going to be tough to get hired - for a matter of a few short weeks!
Okay, so you can’t start until after July 4 and you’ll be leaving for college about 7 weeks later? Would YOU hire you?
@abasket I know And I REALLY don’t wanna go on this trip with my mom but she scheduled it without asking me. I start during the second week of September thankfully, so that may give me an edge over college students who leave several weeks earlier.
@twoinanddone I don’t see why you have to try to make me feel bad about it. It’s out of my hands and I clearly know that I am at a disadvantage because of it.
Here’s the thing…since you can’t start a job until after July 4, which is late to start a summer job…I want to reiterate that you are likely to have more luck doing a more unconventional job than a store or restaurant. A job that is for a summer program for kids might work. Again, offering a service is more flexible…gardening, tutoring, nannying, and things of that sort.
No one is trying to make you feel bad about it. It’s just that it probably disqualifies you from this job, unless they are opening after you get back.
I think you need to look for gigs on Craigslist, and put up an add for babysitting, watering plants and gardens during people’s vacations, and stuff like that.
If you try your hand at English tutoring instead, be sure to brush up the use of its and *it’s/i.
Actually that last suggestion is good one. Whenever we went on vacations, we needed to have a teen come by each day to feed our cats and water plants and the gardens, etc. Summer is a time when many take vacations. If you could get a lot of such gigs like that, you’d have a job you put together from smaller pieces.
@Madison85 Give me a break. I made ONE mistake because I was typing as I was walking. That comment was completely unnecessary and benefits no one.
I fear putting up ads on Craigslist because I don’t want to get kidnapped if I go to a stranger’s house. I also got a response for another interview for next week, so I’m excited about that as well. And Idk if I mentioned this, but I want something that I can put on a resume that will help me get jobs that I am interested in for the future in addition to helping me make money over the summer. I don’t want to just be a little handywoman. I’m not desperate for money as much as I am desperate for experience. The only things I have on my resume under work experience revolve under child care and writing.
Calicash, a seven week job during one summer isn’t going to be of much value on a resume. I can’t imagine anyone hiring you for this short a period of time.
I think we have given you all the advice we can - or that you’re willing to take. Now it’s time for you to focus and figure things out - what do your parents suggest you do??? We don’t know your personal situation, don’t know your town, don’t know your vacation schedule etc. All we can do is give you general, job seeking info for a senior fresh (or not quite) out of high school.
You have been given suggestions from chain stores to local stores. Odd jobs to jobs that require talent (tutoring). Jobs online, in stores and on want ad sites. That pretty much exhausts the possibilities.
I hope you find something. I hope that you will think about starting to look earlier next summer. And, if you plan on working at college in the fall, depending on your school…also act early if jobs have the potential to be scarce.
Not trying to make you feel bad, just be a little realistic. You asked for advice, but didn’t give all the facts that you are not yet done with school so not available full time, and in fact aren’t available for several more weeks. The advice is different for someone who has 10-12 weeks left before school in the fall and someone who has about 7 weeks.
I’ve gotten a lot of jobs because I was available immediately and the employer needed someone ASAP.
Oh, and just for future reference, businesses advertise on Craigslist too - not just individuals that you would have to go to a strangers house.
I second that!
For example…in my city (Boston)…
I just went to Craigslist. Under “jobs,” there are categories for different fields (ie., education, finance, retail, nonprofit, etc.). Now, I realize many of those jobs are full time and ongoing. HOWEVER…once I open a category, I can put into the subject search, the word “summer.” I did that.
Under Education, using “summer”…I got many openings that are current for counselors in summer programs for kids.
Under NonProfit, using “summer”…I got several hits for organizations that want campaigners based on a certain issue…such as the environment, women’s rights, the fund for public interest, grassroots campaign for the Democratic Party, Doctors Without Borders, The Nature Conservancy, and several others…these ALL were paid jobs for the summer.
Under Salon/Spa/Fitness…there are summer positions currently open for lifeguards, pool monitor, and swim instructors.
Under Web Design…there are some summer jobs listed
Then, in reverse, and as I mentioned before…YOU could create a job by offering a service. On Craigslist, you can advertise that services…in categories such as under “lessons” or “garden” or “household.” Further, if you are not comfortable doing that, you could put flyers up at your local post office, supermarket, library, schools, etc. about your service.
Any summer job you do can go on your resume…even decorating hamburgers at McDonalds, or serving soft serve at Dairy Queen. I don’t think you are in a position to be picky.
I agree…things like house sitting, mowing lawns, babysitting, housecleaning, gardening, etc. might be better choices especially given you can’t even start a job until mid July.
D2 was asked by this family she has babysat over the years to babysit today. She declined because we have a dinner and a ballet to go to tonight. The mother then asked D2 if she could come over for few hours to sew her kids’ name tags on their camp clothes. D2 was used to sew her ballet pointe shoe ribbons over the years, so she knew how to sew. I guess after paying $$$$ for her dance lessons, she was able to put some of her skills to good use.
@soozievt Oh, yes! I have been going on craigslist to look for small local business that are hiring I just meant that I wouldn’t be comfortable with finding a posting on craigslist that required me to meet someone in their home.
I applied to work at a Chipotle they are opening by my house soon and a few others nearby because they hire at 16 and have a lot of summer positions available for kids out of school. I also applied at some local smoothie shops and local businesses even though they don’t have signs up. I’m also a strong swimmer, so maybe I will get my lifeguard certification too
