Hi - I’m new here, but Connecticut has the SMTI Preprofessional Program at the University of Hartford. July 3-14 in 2017, ages 14-20. Audition Y, Housing Y. Tuition is $1,550 without housing. My daughter commuted previously, so I’m not sure how much the housing cost was last year or will be this coming summer. They also have a SMTI Jr program for kids entering Grades 4-8.

Does anybody here have recent experience with the PACE summer scholars MT program? Would love to hear feedback (but nothing pre-2015 please as likely not relevant anymore).

@El-Cee we have a friend who went in 2015 (since that’s your cut-off, I figured I’d reply). She loved it! That’s really all I know. The one thing to note though, is that she did not get accepted to them for college (but is at Crane/Potsdam and is incredibly talented). At the time, her mom told me there was a commuter option (and I remember looking at the website and seeing the difference, namely in price). My dd may apply this year (if she doesn’t get into the other ones she applied to), and the current version of the website only gives one price with dorming included, so it’s possible they did away with that option.

@El-Cee my D’s application was complete March 7th, but the site still states it’s “under review.” The site also states that it has rolling admissions and implies that there’s a wait list, so I’m not sure what the delay is. I’ve tried to learn more about the program from blogs, but haven’t found much, which is surprising since their college level musical theatre program is highly rated and selective. What little I have found has been positive, though. Did you or your S or D end up auditioning for Pace?

@StageDad311 yes, my daughter auditioned and was accepted to Pace. And like, you I’m not finding much info online such as reviews or anything, which is why I was asking here. My daughter is going based off the caliber of their BFA program (plus we live in NY so it’s convenient not to travel)… but we realize the summer scholars program may not be anywhere near the caliber of the MT college program, which is why I was just trying to get feedback. I did write to the admissions woman and ask the question about # of applicants and admissions and was told they had reviewed over 500 applications, but they typically receive upwards of 1000 and they admit 20. My daughter applied pretty late (I believe early March) but we had the acceptance by 3/29. I know that the deposits were due by 4/19 so I suspect they will start admitting off the waitlist very soon if not already! Good luck :slight_smile:

@El-Cee Congratulations to you and your daughter! Based on the number of applications, it certainly looks to be very selective. I hope she has an awesome experience! I emailed them this past week to see if my daughter was on the wait list, and when we could expect to receive notification. They replied on the 20th that the director was still vetting through the large number of applications and we could expect to be notified within a week or so. I know they viewed her audition video twice the end of March and once the beginning of April, so it doesn’t look very promising at this point. Thank you for taking the time to respond. At least we know that they do use rolling admission and deposits were due the 19th, so she’s probably on the wait list. Have a great day!

Another great, high intensity summer camp is the Broadway Dreams Foundation. BDF is perfect for anyone going into/already gone through the college audition process and looking to even further their skills in a professional setting. Intensives are one week long and are held all over the country, including places like Atlanta, NYC, LA, PHI, and many more. My S will be interning there this summer so if you have any questions and are interested, please do not hesitate to contact me! Lots of Broadway kids/young adults have gotten discovered thanks to the incredible staff and faculty at Broadway Dreams.

@theaterwork - Thank you very much for the tip about LIU’s summer program!! My son will be attending, and the full scholarship makes it so doable. This program is interesting because it is only for kids who are rising seniors and they did require transcript info (asked for ACT/SAT, too). I’ll be happy to report on his experience after July! Thx again.
