wow…ur stats are amazing haha
i can’t believe ssp waitlisted u…

Wow… all of you have such better stats than me; I can’t believe I was wait listed. Does anyone have any idea what kind of chances people on the wait list have of getting into the program?

I am accepted, and I’m really excited XD, I cannot wait until summer! I am going to the NM campus.
Nice to meet you all, I’m from Vietnam but currently is studying at St.Andrew School, Delaware.

Junior
GPA: 94 ~ 4.0
SAT: 2170 (Maths 780)
SATII: not taken any yet (will take one in May)
AP Tests: not taken any yet(will be taking AP Calc BC, AP Physics Mechanic, AP Physics E&M, AP Literature & AP US History)
ACT: not taken any yet (will take one in April)
Extra-Curriculars: Several prizes in national/international competitions in Maths and Science, some Science projects, and reading some books.
Recommendation Letters: From my Multivariable Calculus teacher and my Physics teacher, which I believe to be quite good.
Essays: It was well-written, though in retrospect, I rambled on too much about theoretical physics, now I burst out laughing everytime I read to the part when I was trying to prove Special Relativity to be wrong:)) I was quite carefree when I wrote them, and I think it turned out to be a plus.

I am looking forward to meeting those accepted, and I hope the best for the students who were rejected or waitlisted.

Decision: Accepted to NM

Junior
PSAT: 226
GPA: 4.0 UW
Rank: 1

EC/Minor Awards: various local and state math contests, science olympiad, math club, spanish club, key club, local music club, etc.

Subjective:
Essays: Not extremely awful but not carefully done; I did this on Sunday, the day before the postmark, and for the majority of it, took my lacking RSI essays piecemeal and inserted them.
Recommendations: I think they were extremely good, because I knew all three teachers really well and they all like me a lot (or so I think…)

Previous summer experiences:
Ross Math Camp
AwesomeMath Summer Program
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
Interlochen Fine Arts Camp

Strengths: Interest in science and math, competitive passion,
Weaknesses: Essays,

I’m pretty excited to be accepted to SSP @ NM. I am hear really good reviews about SSP so I am looking forward to experiencing it. I also applied to Clark but doubt I will get into there.

Sometimes I forget that people like you folks exist!
What would the right adjective be here? Superhuman, perhaps?

I think my guess at where I am on the alternate list just sank by about 200%

Waitlisted

Stats:

GPA ~ 95% (don’t know how to convert it into the American A’s and stuff)
rank - I guess around the top 10ppl in the grade
No standarized tests taken yet (taking ACT tomorrow and SAT in July)
ECs
School government for 4 years, being the class’s speaker for 3rd year now, participation in MUNs, organizing a MUN conference at our school, being a president of the MUN club, english language and physics competitions (a lot, but not olympiads though - except of one in english), participation in international essay contests, univ-research, odyssey of the mind, piano stuff, loads of voluntary work, sports (but not in a school-team way, but rather a private hobby, as unfortunately there’s no school team in windsurfing for which I’d love to tryout if such thing ever existed)
Awards and school stuff - IB class (sort of AP, but due to my transfer friend from the US, a bit harder than AP) 7 subjects out of which 5 Higher Level (Physics, Math, Chemistry, English, German), Scholarships for academic acheivements, 5 languages known
Essays - showing a lot of interest in science, but still presenting me as a well-rounded person

hope more applicants reject the admission letter, then I might get in ^^

the stats are just wow…
:[

@helloimjoon
Thanks, I was a little surprised too, but the people that got in were pretty qualified too. I guess I definitely could have put more work into my essays.

Congratulations to everyone that got in! (Although you should feel free to find “better” things to do over the summer… and give your spot to me :P)

I find it pretty interesting that they have 72 spots and 667 applicants, which means a 10.8% admit rate. That’s the same level as a highly selective college. I guess there’s no shame in being wait-listed… I just sure would have preferred to get in xD

I’m gonna be honest spinnercat, I don’t know how you didn’t get in. Even with sub-par essays, you have really good stats and a clear interest in math and computer science. I’m sure if there’s a ranking for the waitlist you are at the near top.

Fkaraz - 5 HL IB subjects?! Are you insane? haha I only take the usual 3, and that’s not that easy. I’m guessing you’re fluent in German so it doesn’t really matter anyway? and is that B higher or A2 higher? People at my school call you crazy for taking HL math, physics and chemistry… imagine if you were here haha

Seems like people who were accepted had these:

I don’t think scores play a big role because most of the people who were rejected here had 2300+

Did you apply to RSI??
Have you made USAMO yet?

CC results are brutal this time around. Hope this gives you a better idea of the alternate list :3 I don’t have any real research experience, there aren’t any AP classes offered at my school in my grade, and I haven’t taken the SATs yet… so, uh, don’t be scared to apply next year! If you can convey passion through your essays, have top-tier grades and get good recs there’s still a chance.

And here’s a link to the Facebook group; I’m still trying to figure out who’s username belongs to which member on fb. :P

@Drewsuf: haha, ppl here tell me that all the time, but I guess that’ll help me to get to one of my dream colleges
to be honest I started learning German 4 years ago so I’m not really fluent in it, but I try as hard as possible and for me it’s the hardest of all the subjects (except of Polish SL in which I’m terrible)
Btw it’s German B

@ Skipbloom, I’m not actually from Delaware, I just go to school in Delaware. I’m a Vietnamese citizen and still living in Vietnam : )

Whoops, sorry about that! I wish I could change it, but that silly edit window passed :T Probably got some others wrong too…

i wasnt actually on the waitlist… i know i wrote that but long story lol

@kickass

where do u go to school in singapore?

@Helloimjoon

Well, I made USAJMO, which is the USAMO for 9th and 10th graders that take the AMC 10, and did pretty well last year (10th grade). This year was my first year taking the AMC 12 so I never had a chance to qualify for USAMO before this year, and results still haven’t come back.
I’m pretty sure I didn’t make it though, as I only got like a 5 on the AIME >.<
It was super geometry-heavy and my geometry is really really weak.
And no, I didn’t apply for RSI because I pretty much assumed I had no chance of getting in xD

I found the USAMO list online (<a href=“American Mathematics Competitions | Mathematical Association of America”>American Mathematics Competitions | Mathematical Association of America) if you’re still wondering spinnercat.

My son was rejected by SSP, but has been admitted to Ross Math and expects to attend. He had great test scores, hasn’t had Calc BC (only seniors can take it at his school so he’ll have it next year).

For everyone who was rejected:

I was in your position last year. I applied to several science-y summer programs during my junior year and didnt get into a single one (including COSMOS at UCI, which isnt supposed to be terribly competitive). To be honest, it completely freaked me out; I took it as a sign that many colleges wouldnt want me the following year either.

Thankfully, I was wrong. I will most likely be attending Caltech next year, and also was accepted into Harvey Mudd and ISP at Northwestern in addition to other non-tech schools (MIT waitlisted me).

I didnt get into those schools by sitting around moping all summer. I found a chemistry professor that was willing to take me on and enrolled in Linear Algebra at a local university. When I wasnt in class or lab, I volunteered at my towns science center. By working hard, I convinced my PI to let me continue research during the following school year and write a letter of recommendation to supplement my college applications.

You dont need this program, or any program to be successful. Its okay to cry and feel sad. But then take a deep breath, find something amazing to do with your summer, and dont look back.
