Summer Science Program (SSP) 2011

So the international applicants result will be available much earlier than that for US applicants?

I just realized that in the confirmation email, it didn’t specify whether it was a month after the INTERNATIONAL deadline or the US deadline :expressionless: here’s the full email:

Hi _____,

This is to let you know that we have received all required parts for your application to the Summer Science Program. Your application will be reviewed by our Admissions Committee, and we will notify you of your status by email and/or letter as soon as possible thereafter. This process will take about a month, starting after the deadline, so please be patient.

Best regards,
Richard D. Bowdon SSP '74
Executive Director, Summer Science Program

@any alums: Would you recommend sending in any supplemental information? And how much weight is given to supplemental stuff?

I’ve been reading this forum and almost everyone has been suggesting to write the first essay on a topic physics-related. I say that you should go with whatever you are most passionate about and genuinely most interested in - whether it be computer science, biology, math, etc. If they receive 700 apps with every applicant professing his/her love for physics, unless the applicant is really into physics (which, trust me, reflects in your essay and is easy to see right through), all the others will be discarded. At the same time, if someone truly enjoys let’s say computer science, and conveys it effectively, it will most probably be an application boost.

Oh wow, I didn’t know people were so into SSP. My mom just gave me a pack of summer programs to apply to, and this one was the one with the closest deadline (tomorrow). I’m debating if I should rewrite my first answer about physics. I answered with psychology, but honestly I do think physics is pretty interesting.
This is my very first post in college confidential:)

oh great, i have zero physics experience XO i think im screwed lol

whats more depressing is that ssp actually has the highest acceptance rate of all the summer program that i’m applying to. It’s gonna be awful when i don’t make any haha.

@buster: I wouldn’t be to sure about that; iceui2 talked about how he was rejected from SSP and was accepted to Clark Scholars, a program twice as difficult to get into. Its going to be difficult for all of us.

Alright, today’s the final day for US applicants to mail in applications. I just sent mine. Good luck everyone, be sure to post response times and results!

Good luck everyone!!!
Hope you all get accepted ^_^

Anyone wanna start an applicant list?

My stats are quite unimpressive. All I sent was a printed PSAT score from online (no supplemental info/resume sheet or additional tests), two recommendations, my transcript, and the responses to the questions. Bare minimum, really, but I think my essays were good and my transcript speaks for itself.

Also, I’m applying from California for Westmont’s campus. Sorry for the double post, but I can’t edit the one above :/

My stats are pretty low too. I have taken honors Physics (B first trimester for mechanics, and A second trimester for E/M) and AP Compsci experience. (I have all A’s in other classes). My SAT and PSAT aren’t very impressive either (around 1800’s), but I feel like my essays portray my interests pretty well.

I’m new to this thread but I sense that all of you are as much impatient about the results as I am. Good cuz I thought I was the only one freaking out. My application reached Bowdon on the 21st of Jan (international applicant).

Btw I guess my app was decent - MYP alumni best in the year score, now IB with 7 subjects (5 HL), successes in English and Physics competitions, involvement in hosting a MUN in our school + beeing to a few of them myself, making a little science research on the local uni, odyssey of the mind, voluntary work, school government since… forever and 4 foreign languages.

I know that science is only a part of my app-stuff, but I guess being holistic would be considered well and I’m crazy about astro as well (that’s the major I’m dreaming about to study).

When do you think they’d tell us whether we got in or not? Anyone feels like sharing past ssp admission’s decision-time experience?

I sent my application in yesterday…I’m really hoping I get accepted!
Good luck to everyone! :)

When sending in your application, did anyone also include a copy of your ap scores? I didn’t and I’m not sure if they are listed in my official high school transcript.

I got my e-mail saying that my application was received and is now complete! Now for the worst part, waiting!

^ You should send an email to SSP asking if you can send them your AP scores through email, fax, etc.
