Summertime Car for Internship

That’s something to consider. We have e-bikes at home and love them. I think it would depend on how heavily-trafficked the roads are.

A 3-hour walk is roughly a 9-10-ish mile commute. I would not hesitate to ride an e-bike (or regular bike) here in our area. They’re very popular here. Lots of kids use them for commuting to school. Adults for work.

Upstate NY? No clue. :man_shrugging:

Idea - plot out the route on google map, then do some street view sampling of the roads etc.

We have SafeCo, in Ohio. I am going on what my insurance agent told me.

We have had a number of insurance companies. We were allowed to own the car and let our college kid use it in another state. But we had to own the car, and register it here, etc. We did need to notify the company of this.

We had a looong talk with our insurance company and they won’t let us do that. :frowning: But I don’t mind switching!

Thanks!

I just did – it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some quiet roads, but also some very busy ones. And unfortunately not a lot of options for the route planning.

Any chance of changing his accommodations to somewhere closer to the internship?

This is what our insurance does too. Our daughter currently has “her” car (titled in my husband’s name) with her at college out of state. She’s on our insurance.

No, I think his accommodations are pretty set. I’m sure it will all work out – and if it’s problematic, it’s only for a couple of months!

Three of our adult kids are still on our insurance, we own four vehicles, two kids are oos and one of them has one of our cars in SC (although our insurance went up $1000 a year).

Ditto on our insurance company. Both kids had their cars at schools throughout undergrad and grad school and beyond. The cars were in our name, registered at our home address, and they were the drivers. It was never a problem, and between the 2 of them, the cars were in 5 different states.

This motivates me to call our insurance company again and confirm (maybe with a manager) whether this will work for us.

How far is the commute? If he can live where he can walk, run, or bicycle to work, then maybe he just needs an occasional weekend rental car.

Sadly, it’s too far for those options.

With the prices on used cars lately, if you buy and sell after the summer, you might not loose much. My guess is less than the rental fees.

Also, my son (under 21) has done very well with Turo. Especially if there are other interns that might want to go in together.

I feel your pain. We just bought S23 a truck for his summer job. We live in MA, drove it to CO, S23 then drove 14 hours to his job in MT.

Any thoughts on a percentage loss for on a car that is bought and sold within 3 months? He’d sell it back to the dealer – he likely wouldn’t have time to sell it to a private party.

I’m not sure. We bought from a resale truck place and not a dealer. I would definitely not buy new.

thanks for starting this thread- I just found it and we are in the same boat - although different geographically- we live in Boston and son has an internship in San Diego. He needs a car and I’ve followed the same path as you, insurance, rentals, turo, maybe buying… too far to drive one out there for sure. He has an intro call on Thursday to meet all the other interns and I’m hoping cars come up on that. This is an established company that has had an intern program for years, so surely we shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel.

I’d even consider a car swap if you live near San diego
