LTS, a friend’s mother just got done with full brain radiation and so far is doing great (save a little hair loss… but everyone loves what she’s done to her hair! Nobody can tell she’s wearing a wig; everyone just thinks she’s gone all out and completely revamped her style. ). The tumors shrunk, they’re showing no new growth, and when some of them come back, they’ll have been doing monthly scans to watch for them, and will cyberknife them into oblivion.

No cognitive effects seen yet from the radiation, and it’s all over and done with. She’s doing great at the moment!

Keep on keepin’ on, LTS! I’ll be crossing my fingers and keeping you in my prayers!

(P.S. to LTS: Our trial has been recessed until Monday, which is why I happen to be stopping by here at this time of day.)

LTS, You are, indeed, a population of one. What has happened to others, who have not been in anything approaching your mental, physical, and psychological condition, is irrelevant. The doctors know this. You’re in uncharted territory.

It must be so hard to hear bad news yet again. I so admire your ability to fight discouragement as you fight the cancer. Like others, I have faith in your ability to come through this whole.

LTS, numerous melanoma patients have done WBR. One of the more promising stage 4 melanoma treatments requires patients to have no brain mets, so WBR is a regular course of action before going on to the next step. I’ve heard many stories of WBR doing its job with little to no adverse effect on cognitive abilities.

Wishing you and your daughter a tranquil and peaceful Easter.

All this talk of cherry blossoms and Easter prompts me to quote my favorite A E Housman poem in full:

"Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow."

:)

LTS, why are you waiting till Monday? I am thinking that in a situation like that you should proceed as soon as possible.
Is Good Friday observed back east?
Best wishes:-) Thinking abot you :-)

Cherry blossoms are a frequently encountered image in Japanese haiku, such as this one by Issa:

Kelowna I am sort of a “measure twice, cut once” type of person…I never rush into anything…and I still have some questions, and I want a few more days to think about this. And the radiation oncologist assured me few day’s delay won’t matter, as these are all still subcentimeter. I have another appointment with my regular oncologist on Monday and I want to talk to him one more time.

If you think about it, only by the grace of God was this caught so early. Had it not been for the excrutiating, never before experienced herniated disk pain (which has since magically disappeared), I would not have ended up in the hospital, had the scan, found the problem. It would eventually become symptomatic, but even so the treatment plan of whole brain radiation would have been the same…

This is a little different story - involving an infant with an invariably fatal brain tumor - but it is one more story of hope from the NY Times - the girl is now a healthy 7 year old:

Epistrophy, thanks for these links. The last one, the authors states the youngest person he has seen was 22 years old. The 29 year old (never-smoker) lawyer died just last month; just today I learned of a 27 year old single mother stricken. But in any event the article articulates more clearly than I ever could just how serious this issue is, and about the desperate need for advocacy. I also didn’t know that clinical trial participation was only 1%; I thought it was 5%, which I thought was horrible enough.

I also didn’t know Mineta is a lung cancer survivor. I am so surprised. I have met him several times and/or attended various professional events where he has been a prominent contributor or subject matter expert and I never would have imagined he’d ever been sick a day in his life, let alone had lung cancer…

Calmom and momof2inca, thank you, this is information is helpful; unfortunately it’s hard to find a lot of credible data on wbr…

One day, let’s hope, folks will be saying the same thing about you.

Lung cancer survivor Kylie Johnston is just 30 years old and is on a mission to raise $1 million dollars. Kylie aims to provide desperately needed support for fellow Australians living with lung cancer by taking on a challenge that definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted – she will attempt to be the first person to fly over the Simpson Desert in a Hot Air Balloon.

More than 7,000 people die from lung cancer in Australia every year – this equates to almost twenty deaths per day. By the time the Lungevity Challenge is completed, approximately 160 people will have lost their lives to lung cancer.
