Surgery to Look "More Western"?

For hundreds if not thounsands of years, Chinese people prefer a man with a large mouth and a woman with large eyes. There is nothing western about this.

[China today](http://www.chinatoday.com.cn/English/p58.htm)

And I also know for sure that Asian women with large implanted breasts are influenced by western life style.

Coco Chanel started the modern day tanning craze. And yes, I agree that prior (and now) generations strove to have pale skin which indicated that you didn’t have to work out of doors.

"8. Tiny feet and a light elegant gait. "

Does anyone remember studying “bound feet”? That so traumatized me.

Also…that thing about bigger is better;

“I don’t know if it’s the “western culture” thing …I think humans just think “bigger is better”…for all kinds of parts of our bodies…”

Not noses, hips and lips. Well maybe lips, but only recently.

This is being practiced today in the form of high heels. Wearing high heels make one’s feet look smaller and one can only take tiny steps in them.

Many ethnic groups desire light complexion for the same reason.I hope they don’t get accused of wanting to be whites.

Heels aren’t the same…

[CHINESE FOOT BINDING](CHINESE FOOT BINDING)

Is this stuff TRUE?!?

^ Yes, it’s true, horrible, and inhumane. There are some scarry pictures in here:
[Foot binding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Foot binding - Wikipedia)

Fortunately, the practice was banned more than a century ago. But let’s not jump to the conclusion that Western society has better treatment for women. Many CC scholars can elaborate on this.
And don’t forget that we just had a shocking women slavery scandal in California last week.

When traveling in China in the 70s, I saw older women with bound feet. A friend at the time, working as a chiropodist (podiatrist) in HK, took molds of some of her elderly patient’s bound feet. She felt it was a piece of history, to be recorded.

My friend in college who is not Asian had the fold in her eyelids to give her an almond shaped eyes look that was very attractive. But her sister had eyelids that did not match and the parents chose to have that remedied. It also helped with some vision issues, it turned out.

But a lot of people are doing plastic surgery these days. Young Ivanka trump, who is naturally one gorgeous woman has had a lot of work done before she is even 30 years old. The same with Bristol Palin. It’s a shame that the Asian women are changing some of the features that distinguish their ethnicity, even as many think such traits are attractive, but this has been happening for years.

While many Asian-Americans who opt for the eye-lid surgery may do so due to what they perceive as getting features which are more “more white” - due to the sterotypical portrayal of Asians in the media, Asians in Asian who opt for the procedure do so not to look “more white” but to look more like Asians who have natural dbl eyelids (btw, blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the US due to white females wanting more of the “doe eyed” look).

This whole notion of Asians in Asia “getting surgery to look more Western” is the typical Western-centric POV of looking at this.

First off, 1/3 of NE Asians have natural dbl eyelids and 2/3 of SE Asians have dbl eyelids.

2nd, the NE Asian dbl eyelid is different from that of the caucasian dbl eyelid and they can vary from having a “hidden” dbl eyelid or partially hidden dbl eyelid, etc.

3rd, Asians who get the procedure usually pick out an Asian celeb whose looks they want to emulate.

4th, different Asian ethnicities go for a diff. look - for instance, many Japanese women who opt for the procedure want to get more of the anime/manga look, whereas in Korea or China, that’s not the case.

5th, NE Asians are known for having high, prominent cheekbones and fuller lips than what are typically found in caucasians; does that mean that white women who get cheekbone implants and inject collagen into their lips want to look “Asian”? Of course not - they want to look like other white women who have those desirable features.

This type of Western-centric POV is similar to the thinking that women in China, Korea and Japan use makeup/foundation which would give their skin a “creamy” complexion do so b/c they want to look “white” - when this has been going on for centuries.

In this case it was POV of the doctor as well as the mother of the person receiving the surgery according to the article.

I wonder Hu Jintao, China President wears western suit and tie so that he looks white instead of wearing the old Mao suit.
