Survey on majors:

Many science students!!

MAJOR: film

How did you choose your major?

-I went to the film/theatre department adviser and had her change it.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?

-Not completely, I had a strong interest in film but I decided to be undeclared the first year to see if anything else peaked my interest. Nothing did.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?

-Nope.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?

-Haven’t taken many yet so can’t say.

What do you hope to do with your degree?

-Nothing, just get my BA and move to LA.

Major: Mechanical engineering

How did you choose your major?

I’m still technically undeclared. I have a general passion for math and science, but not enough to get me into academia. I have an aptitude for math and mechanics, and I’ve always enjoyed designing and building machines. I have a love for problem solving, both theoretical (math problems, physics problems) and design-related.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?

Yes. As I described above, I felt that I would enjoy this path, and couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I chose my school partly because of its reputation in engineering.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?

No. Math, physics, chemistry, and technical drawing courses in high school contributed to my decision, but I knew from an early age that I enjoy designing and problem-solving.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?

Being a rising sophomore, I haven’t taken very many real engineering courses. Not surprisingly, calculus (single/multi variable, differential equations), physics (mechanics, E&M) have been wonderful experiences for me. I also took an introductory mechanical engineering course, basically a mechanics course with a design project, that I found enjoyable.

What do you hope to do with your degree?

I’m really not sure. I could go into the auto industry, alternative energies (wind, hydroelectric, thermal, etc), commercial airplanes, or maybe even wiggle myself into research. Mechanical engineering, being a broad field, I hope offers a variety of career options.

Major: Supply Chain Management and Anthropology

How did you choose your major?
-Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
I’ve actually known I wanted to do supply chain since middle school. My mom always raved about it, and my uni has one of the best programs in the country, plus its interesting and useful. Anthro I considered before going to school, but decided on officially during the fall semester.

-Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?
My fall anthropology class confirmed it for me. Buried Cities and Lost Tribes, an archaeology class. AMAZING! My business classes have generally lessened my liking for it, but once I actually begin the real program in the spring semester, I think I’ll enjoy it.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
Supply Chain: Although my accounting classes were difficult, I liked them. Especially financial accounting. It’s good stuff to know.
Anthropology: The buried cities class. My socio-cultural intro class was fairly interesting as well.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
Go to grad school, get a masters in higher education, work in a university myself one day.

Did you change your mind before confirming to this major? If yes what made you do so and what had you thought of majoring before?
I’ve changed my mind about my major multiple times. I even considered aerospace engineering at one point. Economics, Accounting, Classics, and a couple others were possibilities as well. But I like my combo.

Major: Music Education/Japanese

How did you choose your major?
–I chose music ed because I idolized my high school band director, and I really just love the whole idea of teaching kids music, I think it’s a very important aspect of education that too often gets pushed by the wayside in favor of other things. Japanese is just because I love the language and culture, and if I absolutely cannot find a job teaching music (shouldn’t be a problem in my area but you never know) hopefully I can find one teaching Japanese until I can get a job teaching band.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
–Yes, I did.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?
–Not in college, but I was in band for nine years, from elementary school all the way through high school. Japanese has always been an interest of mine since I was young, but my high school didn’t offer Japanese.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
–I’ve only been in college for a quarter and I just took gen ed requirements, really. I took a Japanese History class which was fascinating, but it wasn’t really part of my major as I’m focusing on the language. I’m very much looking forward to starting music theory and Japanese classes, though.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
–My dream is to teach high school band. I don’t really know where the Japanese fits in, but I’m more taking it for love of the language, so it doesn’t really matter!

Major: Classics- Latin/Greek, History

How did you choose your major?

I don’t think it was really a “choice”. I knew that I wanted to study ancient things since I was in middle school and I started taking online Latin in high school (not such a great idea, but it did get me ahead a few semesters in college). I’ve always been good at history, but it seemed like more of a challenge to me than completing an English Lit degree would. History would also relate to my Classics degree better.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?

Yesssssssss. Oh yes. The only trouble I had making a decision was deciding between History or English Lit for a double major.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?

I think that, even if I had horrible professors, I still would have continued with my major. I’ve had some pretty great classes though, in my opinion. The language classes (particularly Greek) were very hard for me at the beginning–we’re talking staying up until 3 AM trying to prepare translations–but the feeling of having done well and being able to read these authors I’ve idolized in the original language was SO great.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?

This is tough. I’ve really enjoyed my language lit classes, but that probably makes me a little weird.

What do you hope to do with your degree?

Go to grad school…and then teach on the college level. Basically, to never leave school. Ever.

<—English major

-When I started college I had absolutely no idea what I would major in…I was actually leaning towards Economics until I took a class with the department chair, who is a total *****.
-Modern American Fiction…if I hadn’t taken this class, I might not have majored in English. About a month into it, I was sold.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
-Creative Writing - Fiction…the prof was a published novelist and short story writer, and held amazing workshops. Modern American Fiction was a close second.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
-Go to law school

1.Biology

2.I chose it because it fulfilled all my premed requirements plus if med school didn’t work out I could always go into forensic investigation(my other passion)

Umm I just was always facinated with biology and have always been a science nerd hehe

4.umm none because im notin college yet lmao

Majors: Economics (finance concentration) and Mathematical Biology

How did you choose your major? I’ve wanted to be a biology major since my freshman year bio class in high school. I had the mathematical concentration because I like math and computer science classes. I initially chose finance because I was enamored by Wharton and pressured by my peers. And now I like it.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college? I came in through a program that is specifically for people to get degrees in both science and business. So… I guess? I didn’t know how much I would like it though, especially since I really wanted to go to law school when I entered college.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have? A few courses introduced me to what business classes be like and I loved all of them. I don’t really like biology anymore but I’ve designed my curriculum so I’m only taking 3-4 more bio classes after freshman year. Ha.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major? This “computer applications for business” class because it was like logic, elementary Calculus, computer programming, and computer literacy all in one. Basically, I like numbers and Excel.

What do you hope to do with your degree? Ignore the science degree and really pursue finance. Possibly go into corporate law in the long run. Maybe use some of that science to go into pharma, biotech, or health care if I find that it interests me.

Major: Agricultural Business

How did you choose your major?
Active in student organizations in high school and took all sorts of ag classes not to mention having grown up on a small farm… it just fit.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
Yes. I’ve changed concentrations a few times but I’m still lovin’ the ag business classes.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
Agricultural Economics

What do you hope to do with your degree?
Probably nothing with my undergraduate degree, I’ve been thinking a lot about going into Higher Education Administration. (I’m an RA, SG Officer, etc.)

Major: Wildlife Management

-Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
I started out as Biology, but I wanted to focus more on the conservation side as opposed to the cellular/chemistry side.

-Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?
Conservation Ecology

-What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
General Zoology

-What do you hope to do with your degree?
I’d like to work with an endangered species or big cat breeding program. Or work with a wildlife rescue/rehab center.

MajorA: Environmental Engineering
MajorB: Earth Science (Geology)

Major: Classics- Latin/Greek, History

How did you choose your major?

A: I knew that I wanted to combine science and math into a more practical learning experience, which sort of led me to engg, and then the environmental aspect comes into it when i realized what i wanted to learn about and work with. environmental issues are important to me and i want to help face them

B: it’s hard to want to change the world without understanding what it is made of. this major allows me to comprehend and study the surface and subsurface of the planet, the processes that shaped it and that continue to shape it as we speak. really, it is one of the most fundamentally intriguing things i could think to study; plus, there’s a sweet off campus field methods trip to take.
2. Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?

A: had a pretty good idea
B: originally thought of as a minor, realized i liked it a lot more than i had given myself credit for, now a major.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?

A: not really yet, no, but the engg aspects of all my classes - that is working together to solve problems, definitely has sewn up any doubts i had

B: both Structural Geology and Geophysics made me fall in love for sure with the department and the major.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?

A: Either Systems Analysis, Scientific Computing, or Environmental Chem
B: Geophysics or Structural Geol.

What do you hope to do with your degree?

Find something I enjoy that incorporates field research and knowledge and helping society build efficiently, sustainably, and aesthetically. basically, i have no idea.

political science with possible economic/history minor
How did you choose your major?
honestly the first two years was a mindboggling haze but after a while i realized what classes i actually liked taking and was actually good at.
-Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
far from it
-Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?
i always had a healthy interest in history hence the possible minor
as for poli sci i actually liked them all

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
cant say for sure yet as i’ve only taken the undergraduate classes.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
eeeeeh seriously thought about law school but it could go either way

Current major: Liberal Arts
Major at transferring college: Film/TV Production

How did you choose your major?
At the age of 15, I started watching more movies. I thought “wow, I want to do something like that.” Movies I’ve seen inspired me to want to create a story and visually show it to everyone. I always thought I could’ve done better than the professionals especially when seeing music videos…I know that sounds bigheaded but I just always wanted to prove my strengths. I made fan music videos dating back to 2004 with Spiderman 2 and I’ve continued ever since with other movies and tv shows. I added trailers I made later on.

Did you know that it was what you wanted to study when you began college?
Yes. I enjoyed making music videos and I was extremely good at it. I knew this was my specialty. Even my dad who worked in the music biz and saw music videos daily from various artists thought one of my trailers was actually real.

Was there a specific course you took that confirmed that idea, or introduced you to the major you now have?
Well right now I’m at a community college taking general ed courses preparing to transfer. However, I did take some film courses during my time here. I took Intro to Mass Communications and Film Appreciation…it made me even more determined to because a film/tv major. I was really interested in mostly every topic the classes covered. I’m taking Film and Literature in the fall and hope to take Film History in the spring.

What is the single best course you’ve taken within your major?
I haven’t started yet. I will definitely know once I’m at my new college.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
I hope my Bachelors Degree in Film/TV will allow me to broaden the spectrum in terms of job availability. Having a degree makes it that much easier to find a job. Most jobs nowadays require an undergraduate degree. I might even go for my Masters in Ethology with a minor in Film/TV. I do want to become a film director though.
