That might attract thieves who will make extra sure the no one is there before trying to steal the guns that the sticker suggests are likely to be present.
Of course, keeping guns under extra security is generally advised. There is a reason that big heavy safes exist to store guns.
I started locking my car in the garage because of this thread. Also I’m going to carry my keys (already carry the phone) to my bedside. It has a great panic button.
There have been many car thefts and joyrides in my area this year. I don’t know the details of every one, but I do recall the police mentioning “keys left in unlocked cars” several times. C’mon, people!
There was just a strong of attempted break ins where I live. People were at home in some, out in others. None were successful due to loud alarms and a quick police response. The alarms scared the crooks and the police were close by in my small town.
I am home alone a lot and don’t always lock all the doors. I assumed I would hear the chimes (alarm system set to make noise when the doors open or close). I’ll have to be more careful.
There was a recent scary incident in the neighborhood next to us, which full expensive houses. It was 10 pm and the homeowners were home watching tv in their family room. Somebody rang the doorbell quickly about 8 times. The neighbors assumed it was just the neighborhood kids clowning around doing “doorbell ditching,” so they didn’t answer the door. A few minutes later, two people kicked in the front door, which understandably caused the owners to scream. The robbers quickly grabbed items nearest the front door and ran out. The brazenness of the robbery has really shaken everyone in our community.
Seems like the doorbell ringing was to check if someone was there before breaking in. Since no one answered, they may have assumed that no one was there, and were surprised that someone was there when they kicked in the door, so they stole what was in reach and fled quickly.
(Of course, stronger doors, locks, and strike plates would have made it more difficult to kick in the door.)
My fob alarm works too well at times when I have accidentally set it off. Works on the second floor, and third floor, too. I guess it is pretty easy to check if it will work in the house.
Desperate drug addicts will be brazen and also irrational and could be violent. Some thieves are just wanting what isn’t theirs for ‘easy money’ and for fencing the goods or now doing something like selling on eBay.
Some want to be sneaky. A friend in a condo had a neighbor who would set her purse on a kitchen chair right by the back unlocked door - yeah the purse was nabbed. We had a high end store where they tried to use her credit card and the gal did get caught.
Another reason to lock your doors: a fatigued person mistakenly thinking your home is his/her home walks in through your unlocked door, notices you there, erroneously thinks that you are a burglar or robber in his/her home, and …
I have to agree on the security cameras. We have arlo pro as well, we had it when a couple of break ins have started in our neighborhood. It will notify you when it detects a movement and you can talk to the camera as well. It’s just a little out of our household’s budget, quite costly.
DD is living in a university district this year, in a casita with a gated front yard.
She was home and opened her blind to water her plants by her desk, she was on her computer right by that window. She was interrupted and went into the next room for longer than planned. Apparently one guy watched at the window, the other guy took out the security light (too low) and reached over the six foot gate to unlock it (lock too high) and snuck across the front yard and into the tiny house! He grabbed the laptop and wallet and took off. She heard a noise and saw his arm, DD’s immediate instinct was to give chase, shouting all the way. Her only excuse is cold medicine befuddled her. She caught up, got smacked in the face and saw there were two guys so turned and ran back home. We are reviewing all the scary what ifs!
The police were unimpressed.
