What do you think of this? I really wonder how much it has to do with Dean Forman’s personal preferences… Are the best professors in Econ sure to leave?

Bannerjee seems to think they’ll leave. He’s furious. Can’t really blame them for leaving. Pretty tough to recruit high end talent to a school with no research in Economics.

Econ’s a joke here anyway. Now, it’s pretty much non-existent.

Yes, I know it’s horrible, but I think it might be a reasonable decision (it would have been much better if the dean had consulted the faculty). There are other departments that don’t have PhD programs, like classics, for example, and their professors seem to be excellent, though I guess it’s different…

Yea, we were in the same Classics class, I think. And I loved it.
But I think Economics research is different from Classics publications.

In the long run, I guess I don’t mind it too much (if it helps the sciences and math departments). Gosh, we could use a faculty boost in math. The quality is there. We just need more.

So, there is no reason for the dean to cut some program to strengthen others, right? U of Cali. System is facing real financial crisis, but all school in UC does not cut programs, but classes. Additionally, three or two UC are gonna establish their new medical schools, under a situation that there are almost nine medical schools in Cali. Emory just cut one of the only two dental schools in Georgia in 90s. I do not know what people in the administration think about. Emory is not a small liberal college in the south, but a comprehensive university in this nation.

Robin Forman is the dean of Emory College, the dean of Laney Graduate School is Lisa Tedesco.

Emory is not facing a financial crisis.

Periodically it makes sense to review the university’s offerings and make sure the available resources are being used to maximum effect. Some years ago Emory offered post-graduate degrees in dentistry and library sciences. There is less need for dentistry these days, and computers have made libraries more efficient.

Emory could have done a lot better job on the communications …
