Great news! Congrats to your daughter!! We have 2 visits coming up ![]()
Yeah! So exciting! My daughter has another this weekend. We’re hoping she gets an offer there too. Both would be great fits for different reasons!! Definitely would be a good problem to have to stress about which is best lol This recruiting thing is no joke!!!
She did get an offer this weekend too! They are still working on the financials though. Hopefully more info tomorrow. Definitely tough decision for her coming up! ![]()
Congratulations to your D. Make sure that she realizes it is possible to have more than one “right answer.” If both options sound great, they are likely both great options.
What did your swimmers wear to their meetings with the coaches? I read an old thread on this topic and it had some saying casual and others saying khakis+polo, but those were not for swimming. My son will want to wear sweat pants and a plain t-shirt.
His school uniform is khakis and polo
Khakis and some sort of a shirt with a collar is appropriate. Sweatpants and a t-shirt won’t be a show stopper, but it is not likely to leave a good impression, either.
The sport is irrelevant. He should dress nicely. Business casual shirt/polo with khakis/chinos. No sweatpants or slides.
Casual nice is totally appropriate. Jeans and a pocket-T or polo was our go to. Paired with a HS swimming crew neck or Championship quarter zip if it was cold. Personally I would not wear sweatpants, but then again, we don’t really do sweatpants “out of the house”.
Perfect. Thanks all!
I would have preferred my daughter wear something a little nicer, but she did wear t-shirt and leggings/sweats and it was fine. The coaches had polos and shirts but the teammates were very casual. When in doubt dress up a little! It just happened to work out for us, sweatpants are definitely not my advice lol
My son got an offer today at a visit!
This is his top choice school/team, and even though he has 2 more visits coming up, he wants to commit to this one. This is not a highly selective school even though it’s a T15 D3, and the coach did not give him a deadline - he said “if you want to join, you have a spot”. A few question for the helpful experienced parents here:
- I guess from here S25 needs to call him and say he wants the spot and ask about next steps in admissions process? The school has rolling admissions, and I don’t know the extent of coach support. I suspect S25 is on his own to get in.
- When people say they committed verbally to a D3, does that mean committing to the admissions process or that they have already been accepted by admissions?
- I assume S25 should still meet with at least one more coach and hopefully get one more offer just in case top choice doesn’t materialize. If that’s true, then he probably should not verbally commit to the coach of top choice school until then, correct?
Thank you!
Congratulations! That is super exciting for him. I looks like things worked out well!
He can (should) ask. The coach will likely say the next step is applying. Specially since its rolling. The earlier he gets it in the sooner he will here. He should let the coach know when its been submitted. Are you comfortable with the finances?
All D3 commitments are verbal only. There is no contract/NLI signed. Selective schools (in particular Ivies even though D1) prefer the “committed to the process” language because coaches cannot offer admissions and AOs have the final say. Some kids play it safe and will hold off the announcement until acceptance, so there is no more “process.”
He can and should commit to his top school so the coach does not move on to the next swimmer on his list. If its a T15 team, you can be pretty confident that the coach is actively recruiting and building a roster. He should absolutely NOT accept a "just in case’ offer, even if receives one. He can go on the OV and express gratitude for the opportunity but when the offer comes he needs to let the coach know he is not prepared to commit at that time.
ETA for clarity and to @cinnamon1212 's point… he can tell the coach who made the offer that has one more OV before he can make a final decision. He should not commit and still go on an OV. (but if its his top choice, take the offer and move on - don’t over think it)
-
An offer is when a coach says BOTH a) you have a spot on the team AND b) I will support your application with admissions. If you only hear the first part that is not understood to be an offer.
-
It always means committing to the process, no coach can offer an admissions spot, only the Admissions office can do that.
-
No, if someone commits, they stop recruiting talks with other schools, and let all the other coaches know they have committed elsewhere.
I would advise going back to the coach (and at this point I think it’s ok for the parent to speak with the coach) to clarify whether the coach will be supporting your son’s application. Assuming the answer is yes, you will want to ask how many kids with coach support don’t get in, whether there is a preread process etc.
Thank you- very helpful as always. I wasn’t on the visit (my husband took my son and also got to meet the coach). Will see what S decides from here. @TonyGrace yes, finances look fine.
just saw this - early august. Hope you have had some success.
S25 talked to the coach and committed yesterday!
He reached out to the other coaches to let them know as well. Now on to submit the application in the next week or two (I hope), which has a rolling deadline
There is no pre-read process for this school, but this coach has been there for 20+ years and has no concerns with his GPA (in fact, the school has a guaranteed scholarship amount for applicants with his GPA). This is a small LAC with a high acceptance rate. S25 has also been in contact with the admissions representative assigned to his HS throughout this process. Hoping for a positive outcome. It would be incredible to wrap this all up in the next month or two. Then I can move on to D27 ![]()
Excellent. Congratulations all around. Remind S that, in terms of topics, he needs solid singles and BB from his essays–no need to swing for the fences trying to get home runs.
That is an important point, thank you. Right now I think S25’s draft is sincere and down-to-earth, just like he is. It doesn’t have anything extravagant or showy.
Wow! Congrats!!
She does have two offers! She loves a lot about each, but I’m not sure if either is THE fit? It’s so hard! She has another Official this weekend and another wanted her for one the following weekend but she has a meet. So she’s going to touch base with them in a few weeks. It’s so stressful. I know she wants to be done and would love to commit asap, but I definitely want it to check all the boxes. But it does feel like it’s starting to get late for 2025s!
