Swimming Recruiting for Int’l Jr. Targeting Highly Selective Colleges

Someone’s telling fibs.

Is bff referring to more than one person? You cannot apply REA to Caltech, Harvard and Stanford. Williams and Wesleyan only allow 1 ED application.

Caltech is also REA

Maybe the bff received Likely Letters?

From other threads (and previous posts), my take is some other girls from her high school with higher stats were applying to the above mentioned schools. And I also think he has mentioned that some of the top club swimmers in Hong Kong (who may also be at her high school) were committed to US colleges.
My take on his comment was best friends (plural) from swimming and/or high school, have committed/gotten into those schools.

Traditionally they is plural. D24 is ecstatic for them, one of whom now has plenty of time to write the peer letter one of the schools on her list requires.

Two of her friends are recruited for swimming, one has been offered a soccer spot if she attends, and one is legacy. All straight A or 45 Predicted IB.

so much correction and negativity on this thread - can we all try to be supportive vs judgmental ?

Reminder that CC is supposed to be friendly and welcoming. We all make grammatical mistakes from time to time (I’m one of the worst offenders). The fact that bff wasn’t plural is not carte blanche to accuse the OP of being dishonest.

There is no need to be commenting until OP posts an update when they have a decision, which should be soon.

Nobody accused the OP of being dishonest. Due to lack of clarity in the post, people were understandably confused and thought that the singular “bff” was probably being dishonest.

Update? Have had fingers crossed for NiVo daughter all day.

D24 rejected for early round, another school off her list.

She’s ecstatic for her best friends who all got in the early round for Harvard, Stanford, Williams, and Caltech… But obviously feels somewhat isolated. It’s time for her to focus on her ED2 decision, which is the most critical.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully she still has some schools she is very excited about on her list.

Curious, we’re her friends recruited athletes applying ED with coach support? From her high school with similar stats and international student status?

Sorry to hear ED didn’t work out. Unhooked ED to presumably one of Brown/Cornell/Dartmouth (on your list) is very tough, and most academically qualified applicants are similarly rejected.

Not understanding why you state “It’s time for her to focus on her ED2 decision, which is the most critical”? An ED2 app doesn’t appear to fit with your goals of “top 100 ranked” and “varsity swimming”.

Your D24 will likely be admitted to McGill this month - a top 50 ranked school with a probable varsity swimming spot. Being top ranked accesses a large scholarship in your home country, as you’ve previously indicated. McGill also has the academic curriculum you seek.

Presumably you are looking at Tufts or Wesleyan for ED2. Applying ED2 and being admitted takes McGill off the table.

Tufts isn’t “top 100 “ ranked - so no scholarship. And there is no varsity swimming walk-on opportunity, as you have previously said.

Wesleyan isn’t “top 100” ranked - so no scholarship. Perhaps the coach has said “if you get in, there’s a swimming spot”, but it doesn’t sound like there is overt coach support with Admissions.

It doesn’t seem like ED2 fits with your previously stated priorities.

All the schools on D24’s list qualify for the home country scholarship she’s applying for, which covers about 50% of tuition. We understand @Sportyprep lack of familiarity with a scholarship he’s not previously come across.

Whilst she’s young, D24 has a good handle of the intricacies of her current journey, and the unlikely odds of getting accepted unhooked to schools with single digit or low teens acceptance rates. She’s hopeful McGill news comes out positive in 2023.

She’s also obviously prevy to detailed coach discussions and how they impact her decisions. Her subsequent acceptances will be shared in due course.

@nivo I’m sure it has been a tough 24 hours for your daughter. My advice - as a parent - is to distract her. Take a break from sm. Go do an activity as a family. As much as you say she is grounded and has a handle, it is also really hard when her friends are getting into these “prestigious” schools and she feels locked out.

good luck with the rest of the journey.

You are correct, I am not familiar with the scholarship you have referenced many times in this thread - except from what you have provided. And you wrote that a school had to be ranked in the Times Higher Ed top 100 to get the scholarship - which has been a frequent stated goal of yours. Perhaps your goals have changed, and you no longer care if Wes or Tufts are in this particular top 100 ranking, but you have said numerous times it is one of the significant reasons McGill is on your target list.

She did review the scholarship in detail and they accept several different T100 rankings. She verified that it covered all her list, which is great, provided she gets it of course. Either way, it is not a deal breaker, not her focus st this juncture. Like many other kids who don’t have a letter in hand, she’s working hard on optimizing her final essays, and will then await the answers.

This thread is such a trainwreck, but I can’t look away.
