After I become emotionally invested in these dancers, my highest and best hope for each of them is that they will be hired to dance. I don’t think Robert and Kent would be hired for the same jobs.

No, not at all. I actually had the sense that Robert was the most employable of the three finalists. A solid dancer who doesn’t get in the way of the choreography. Kent called attention to himself whatever he did; he would last about two minutes in a corps. Lauren has something of the same problem. Of course, they both have some room to mature – some of what I was seeing was enormously attractive kids part of whose attraction was being kids (although, at least in Ms. Froderman’s case, with a full set of secondary sex characteristics). Robert seemed more mature (although he had some immature goofiness about him, too). My sense was that Robert had maxed out, while Kent and Lauren were understanding their own capabilities more and more each week.

Do what now?

Kent revealed more about himself in the interviews shown this past week…a caginess, perhaps. He evolved in many ways during his time on the show, as a dancer, and how he viewed himself. At least twice during Wednesday’s show, he made remarks about it not mattering what happens, he did not need this to prove anything about himself as a dancer. Was it an effort to be less of an eager puppy? Was it a way to protect himself? One had to wonder at the time if it was off-putting, if it would affect the votes. Perhaps it did. I was disappointed for him.

Lauren never presented as a dancer, but rather as an athlete, who could use her body however she was coached, choreographed, etc. IMHO There was no lyricism to her movement. This business from Adam about how she is the music…???

I enjoyed Robert more and more…came to think he should and could win, but alas…

Lauren’s At Last solo in Vegas proved that she had lyricism. Look it up on youtube; it’s amazing!

There really aren’t any losers among the top finalists on SYTYCD - most of them go on tour and of course now we are seeing them come back as “All Stars”. I think the reason the judges nurtured Jose along so long is that they recognized that he is good box office for the tour. The prize money is nice, but I’m sure that the others make star-quality money on the tour as well, and of course it opens up many very lucrative career opportunities.

Kent had too much of a dance-competition look and feel for my liking – that’s where he learned to put on that awful happy-face. I think the judges worked to get him to drop the facade, as obviously he does have a lot of talent but was previously trained for glitz.

Never warmed to Kent’s personality … he always seemed to be mugging to the camera. Did anyone else find his demeanor after the (very wonderful) dance with Allison forced? I didn’t quite buy it, seemed like he was trying to pull an 11th hour fleshing out of his emotional depth.

Edit: I’m only talking about how he was after the dance, during the critique. Loved the dance.

I thought Lauren’s lyric qualities definitely became well developed during the run of the show. Both times I saw her do her Argentine Tango, for example, I just could not get over the flow of her arms…every movement fluid and extended…down to her very fingertips. Breathtaking!

By the way, all you dance fans out there: have you seen the movie “Every Little Step”? DH and i just watched it on NetFlix streaming. I had seen it before in the theater on the “big screen” but he never got to. It’s so great and tells so vividly the moving stories of all those dancers out there who struggle to make it in the business. And just to dance another day!

Robert grew on me, although I am glad Lauren won. At first he seemed as plastic as the Ken doll he danced but he was the only one that had to deal with all the killer classic dances and he did them with grace and style. And his interpretations as he settled and matured on the show could be breathtaking. He showed more versatility with Lauren right in there. Kent had more trouble when he was out of his genre.

I agree, singersmom, that Robert was fantastic. I don’t think it really sunk in with me until the very end that he was so close in age to Lauren and Kent. I always thought he was much older.

One more thing about the “Every Little Step” movie: you see a good bit of our friend Tyce Di Orio (or “Tasty Oreo” as my son says Cat tends to call him…). He was down to the final cut for one of the leads in the show. But his ego was too big for the part!

That’s it. Competition judges LOVE that kind of ridiculously exaggerated face. I’m sure it earned him many a platinum, so I can understand that it was hard for him to drop it.

We loved Robert – he has the maturity that Kent lacks and the charisma that Lauren lacks – but I can’t argue with Lauren winning. She and Robert were the 2 standouts in terms of versatility; they alone excelled at everything. I think Robert may have done better if his personality had been evident from the beginning. I remember that at mid-series, Nigel talked him up bigtime on consecutive weeks; said that he couldn’t understand why the viewers kept putting him in the bottom 3, and that they had this incorrect idea that Robert was “arrogant.” After that, I think the viewers took another look and liked what they saw. From the comments on this and other boards, and from people I talk to, I just have the sense that Robert was closing fast at the end.

Earlier this evening I re-viewed Alex’s “Hallelujah” and “Outta Your Mind.” If only …

LOL, we aren’t big Tycle lovers at my house, so we love to talk about how Tyce didn’t get the part in A Chorus Line and why.

Still adore Kent, but I totally see what you are saying about him being so dance competition-y…hey, that’s all there was for him. He’s now entered a larger world and I hope he makes the most of it.

missypie,

Glas to see we aren’t the only ones who don’t care for Tyce’s choreography. I guess he did the baseball piece for Kent, though, which seemed to put him over the top for the finals. I just never find his choreography surprising.

I’m also glad to see others out there liked Robert more and more. Didn’t Nigel say toward the end that Robert had improved the most? Maybe my DD and I just fell for him because he’s so tall, dark and handsome . . .

Just got home from seeing the SYTYCD tour. It was a FANTASTIC show…non stop fun!! D and I could not think of a single dance we really wanted to see that was not performed. If you get the chance to go, DO IT!

The only thing we all thought was missing from the tour show was NEIL!!! He needed to be dancing with Kent in those two numbers.
