SYTYCD Summer 2014 Thread

I love Broadway. I don’t live in NYC, but I try to go to as many BW shows as I can. I don’t see how being on a BW show is any better or worse than being a backup dancer to a pop star. I guess I’m just really surprised that anyone would look down on the opportunity to perform on Broadway.

@fireandrain, and that’s what makes horse races

There was a time during my first marriage when a relative, who was in a position to get me great tickets for baseball games for a high-ranking team asked me why I was the only relative who never once had asked for World Series tickets. I replied that I knew how much he loved baseball, and I had friends who would jump through hoops for such an opportunity, but that for me, after looking at the green grass, the blue sky, eating a hot dog and having a sip of beer, I was good and ready to go home.

The other thing about Ricky is…maybe he wants to go to college?! I believe Melanie Moore is in the Ailey program at Fordham. Not sure what kind of student Ricky was, or what his aspirations are, but he is only 18…

I think you have to strike while the iron is hot with these reality shows. Not that I’ve necessarily seen any of them do anything afterwards. It’s not like any of us could name more than a handful of “famous” dancers. I don’t even know if it’s possible to make a living as a professional dancer that isn’t in a company.

And I do love Broadway. I wouldn’t look down my nose at it, but I don’t think for these west coast kids it would have any appeal.

Alex Wong had been with a professional ballet company, and he was in Newsies. (One alum - Evan? - was in Newsies the entire Broadway run.) At 18, I would think Broadway would be pretty appealing.

For one thing, if you are in a Broadway show, it’s a heck of a thing to have on your resume’ and the money is good. Also you qualify for and earn your Actor’s Equity card which opens an entire other set of doors to you. Do yeah, I think he will do the show.

Most shows I’d agree that having Ricky in the cast as a “dancer” would be a waste of his talent…but THIS one potentially could be a great opportunity to showcase him. I personally do know several professional dancers (my daughter had thoughts of doing that and did do some professional work but switched pursuits during college) and they truly do live the gypsy life…moving from job to job. And being a dancer in a modern dance or ballet company (unless it’s something like Ailey or ABT, etc) is usually not enough to pay the bills long term.

It sounds like he is going to do Broadway.

<a href=“'So You Think You Can Dance' Winner Ricky Ubeda Is Adorable, and Tired”>http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/09/04/so-you-think-you-can-dance-winner-ricky-ubeda-is-adorable-and-tired.html</a></p>

He’s pretty adorable. And it’s crazy that he started dancing because of the show.

I saw Alex Wong, Evan and Jess in Newsies. (Jess was a huge standout; more so than Evan.) Evan and Jess always had Broadway as a goal, but Alex Wong certainly has to be one of the most gifted dancers to ever have appeared on SYTYCD.

I completely agree! I was blown away by this routine with Twitch:

^^ My all time favorite number on SYTYCD. The concept was brilliant, the choreography was brilliant, Twitch was brilliant. And it shows why Alex Wong is IMO the all time best dancer on SYTYCD.

I don’t watch this show, but I am obsessed with this video and am told she is from SYTYCD … Thought y’all might enjoy. <a href=“Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud (Official Music Video) - YouTube”>Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud (Official Music Video) - YouTube;

Her name is Brittany Cherry and as far as I know, and I watched every season, was never on SYTYCD.

Here’s what I saw: <a href=“Brittany Cherry | So You Think You Can Dance Wiki | Fandom”>http://soyouthinkyoucandance.wikia.com/wiki/Brittany_Cherry</a></p>

It’s pretty hard to recall SYTYCD contestants who were eliminated a year ago at the top 20 level, since we barely saw them dance. I bailed on the video after a minute because Ed Sheeran does nothing for me, plus he’s wearing street clothes and she’s wearing a transparent negligee, and that sort of thing makes me tired.

I remember her because she was a fellow Californian. I believe Nigel gushed over her early on (more with her physical attractiveness than anything else) and then hated her final dance for your life. What did you expect in her solo? She’s a BALLROOM specialist…

She’s a little chestier than dancers tend to be, so it makes sense that Nigel would gush. She is talented, though, so I’m glad to see she’s getting work.

I definitely tend to forget the ones not in the top 10. Glad to see she’s got work, but I’m irritated with the costuming with the girl in the neglige and the guy in street clothes.
