I missed the first part of it, but tuned in while the two girls were doing the pointe piece. I will go back and watch the rest as soon as I can.

So I’ll start there…ouch. I agree with you, MommaJ. Jourdan had been hyped up and I expected to be impressed with her dancing. The other girl was better, but neither one was strong on technique. That is a really hard variation and I just think it was way beyond their abilities.

Some of the others were entertaining but I am still rooting for Ricky. If you want a taste of what he is capable of, watch this (completely tongue in cheek, but adorable!).

I agree it’s hard to keep track of everyone this early, so I literally sit there with paper and pencil and take notes on each routine and vote afterwards depending on how many stars I give them. For me the tappers and the hip hop and that Sonya Tayeh (no idea how to spell her name) contemporary piece that Jessica and Ricky did were tops. Also the samba (green costumes) that Marquette and Marlena did. The pointe piece was SO hard and the choreography just highlighted every single mistake or deficiency. Goodness. But the show was AWESOME and I loved it.

Yeah, he’s adorable. I first saw him in a video with his high school dance team (how many boys do dance team?!). He’s just an incredibly gifted kid. Can’t wait to see what he can do in other genres besides contemporary on the show.

This happens so often in summer - just can’t keep up with a show! We are still taping SYTYCD, but haven’t watched since early auditions. I have heard the name “Ricky” over and over being talked about!

Well, I’m definitely not an expert on dance, but I agree about the ballet number. I thought one of the girls was better than the other, but I have no idea which one was which.

The ballet girls were put in an unflattering light with the hard choreography and identical costumes – but yeah, they just were not that good. Nothing like Eliana and Cheon from two years back.
By the end of the show, I couldn’t even remember the first two ballroom dancers, so perhaps that does not bode well for them.
We laugh every year at the elaborate back stories of the contemporary pieces: She loves him. But he is getting through a disfiguring accident. So she strikes out on her own and encounters aliens before finding her way back . . .

I actually voted last night…most votes for Ricky, a few for Jessica, a few for the tap boy and a few for Samba (lime green costume) boy. Ricky and Jessica’s number was awesome. I thought the two b-boys (or whatever they are now - pop and lockers or whatever!) had unfortunate choreography.

And speaking of unfortunate choreography…yes, I felt sorry for the two ballerinas. I think Nigel et al were so intimidated by the choreographer that they were afraid to tell him that his choreography would get them sent home (and make it impossible to tell one girl from another.)

Just watched the video of Ricky at a dance competition. I was a “dance mom” so I’ve been to loads of those competitions. Let me tell you, the girls just go CRAZY when there’s a great male solo!

I agree about the ballet number. One girl was better than the other, but who’s who?

I think it’ll be easier to remember dancers once they’re not in their own style. We’ll take note of the ones who surprised us by how well they did, and, conversely, those who we think should go home.

I love this show! I’m disappointed that I can’t vote this year because I’m not on Facebook.

I felt the ballet dancers got a raw deal. They were dressed identically so it was difficult to tell them apart and they had to dance in unison so no chance to put their own personality into the dance. Plus the choreography was extremely difficult and demanding.

I loved the tap dance but confess I was holding my breath the whole time that neither of them would slip and fall off the stairs!

Loved the tappers, too, but there were times that I thought the female was a little unsteady on the stairs.

I wonder why they didn’t show a recap of the dances. After rushing the judges’ comments, they seemed to have time to kill. Maybe they had technical difficulties.

I didn’t think the first ballroom couple did well. In fact I think a lot of the boys were better than their partners. I think that girl and the ballerinas will be in the bottom 3. They’d have to dance for their lives because I didn’t know which was which.

I love ballet, danced it for many, many years…why on earth did they not get a choreographer to do something a bit more contemporary? There are some breathtaking ballet pieces they could have done and not the pas de deux from swan lake with two black swans…why on earth wasn’t one the white swan?

I nearly didn’t remember a single dancer from the auditions. It seems like this year they focused on a lot of dancers who didn’t make it.

eyemamom: Yes, it was clear the narrative this year focussed on different dancers during the auditions, almost all of whom got cut. They must feel that we’ll have several weeks to get to know these new dancers, so why waste time in the auditions. I thought that red hip hop dancer (Ya Ya?) was adorable, and was disappointed she didn’t get selected.

I really dislike the 8 seconds to tell us about yourself. The dancers spoke so fast and garbled, that I didn’t learn a thing about any of them!

eyemamom, I agree completely. After watching the Swan Lake PDD I wondered how those girls could have been selected for the top 20 based on their ballet technique. Then I watched Jourdan’s audition video–it was much more contemporary and I can see why the judges liked her. She actually has really good training but I was surprised at the lack of technical skills in her dance.

I was disappointed in the pairing of Ricky and the tapper. I hope she does not limit the choreography they get.
I don’t even remember their names yet and will be glad when there are fewer to keep up with.

I do think the right two went home. But Nigel was pretty harsh telling the female that she was brought along because she was so attractive. The ballerina’s were much improved this week. I still think the ballroom dancer, the one who did the tango, is the weakest link for the girls. I can’t remember anyone’s names yet.

I was also disappointed in Ricky getting the tapper. She looked big and clumsy to me compared to him. Why didn’t they give him someone better who fit him physically as well? I hardly even looked at her dancing, my eyes were always drawn to him.
