SYTYCD Summer 2014 Thread

I missed the show but am trying to catch up on the performances on youtube. Why was Ricky paired with Valerie again? She is cute but I don’t think her technique is very strong.

They keep the same partners through the top 10, then they bring in all starts after that. I just thought the show was okay last night. The last number was not a show stopper. I didn’t think anything was awful, and I didn’t think anything was spectacular. I hate to say it, the show is getting stale.

Since Stanley went home, that means Jessica will have another new partner, but I can’t remember who it will be. At this stage, there are just too many for me to keep up with!

I was not that sold on Valerie’s waltz. I like her and think she is adorable, but I thought her arms were not pretty in that dance. I don’t want her to go home, though.

I think Rudy is very nice, but the goofiest kid ever. I wonder if Jacque feels the same about him as he does her. If not, it would have to be a little awkward for her.

I enjoyed Misty and her knowledgeable critiques as a judge again. I wonder if she is going to be there regularly?

Rudy works my every last nerve.

I look forward to SYTYCD. So far the season it has been okay, but not much better than that. I wonder how much longer it will be on.

Misty (and other knowledgeable dancers) are a welcome relief from the “fan judges” who seem to be searching for synonyms for “awesome” for every dancer. I, who know nothing, can ooh and aah at the dances. I expect something more informative from the judges.

ETA: the playing up of Rudy and Jacque was a low point for the show. I think Cat is one of the best hosts ever, and I was embarrassed for her.

Re the Rudy and Jacque thing: Jacque was in the first dance, and the thing shared by her partner about her was that she has a crush on Rudy. Then, of course, surprise, surprise, Rudy has a crush on her. I am a sucker for a good little romance, but even I am way skeptical of this one.

I hate to think about summertime without SYTYCD. I hope the show finds a way to stay relevant without resorting to silly things like this.

Jessica will be paired up with Marcquet who lost his partner, Jordan. I thought Marcquet would be huge on the show, what with his presence on stage, his likability, his height, the fact that he can do ballroom and hip hop – but he has really been struggling. I adore Teddy and Casey! I was surprised they were in the bottom three. The girls who are left are all just fine, good dancers, really likable, but no one stands out like an Eliana or a Melanie.

I have a co-worker who has been watching from the beginning, and she says the level of dancing, choreography, and artistry has really improved since the early seasons, which were more “flashdance” and cheesy. I don’t think I would have ever gotten into a show that was more glitzy – I don’t watch Dancing with the Stars. But I am kind of with churchmusicmom here in that maybe the current format is getting a LITTLE stale – all the contemporary pieces, the highlight for me, are looking VERY similar.

And don’t get me started on Tyce D’Orio, haha. Rarely have I seen a man so moved by his own work :).

Ha! Line of the day, and it’s barely 10 am! Thanks.

Yes! I totally agree. I can hardly even stand to look at him when they zoom to him in the audience.

I know exactly what Nigel was trying to say on the skeleton hip hop. What I wanted him to say, however was: “At this stage of the show, many of you don’t have a big following and most voters can’t yet tell all of the dancers apart. The skeleton makeup did you a huge disservice, because the voters won’t know who you are.”

Last week I was going to vote for Stanley, because I knew that the irritating choreography of the telephone number would get him sent home. It was only after I clicked on the app on my phone that I remembered I was watching the show on the DVR on Thursday night.

For some reason I’m not enjoying this season as much as I have in past years. Several of the partners don’t seem to have a “connection” to each other this season and their dances seem to be more like two people dancing separately side by side instead of a couple dancing together in a partnership.

Yeah. If you get the chance, watch him in the movie Every Little Step, which is a documentary about the process of casting the revival of A Chorus Line on Broadway. (we have it because our D is actually in it, briefly. ). He auditions and is in the final three (I think) under consideration for one of the main roles, and his diva-ness is unreal and hilarious! I think he changes the choreography at one point to make a double turn into a triple or quad or something like that.

But he is quite well-known now for his choreography (like it or not), so perhaps he does get the last laugh on the casting directors for this one. :)

I don’t find the women dancers to be that interesting this season. I, too, was surprised to see Kacey in the bottom this week, as well as Emilio.

The Bollywood number was adorable, loved it.

Well Jessica is going to have ANOTHER new partner. If I were the guys, I would be wary of the curse of dancing with her. Just kidding. She is lovely. I did agree with the ones who went home. Next week, it will be tough to choose four of them to eliminate.

I thought overall the choreography was strong tonight. Although I like Jessica, I thought she and Marquette had the weakest dance.

OK, missed the broadcast again but watched the Bollywood number. Still love Ricky, but Valerie is so stiff and just not musical to me. Why have they been together the past three weeks?

I also watched Jacque and Zack because I just read the other day that she is a student (and on the dance team) at Iowa State.

BTW, who went home??

In case anyone does not want to know who went home yet, here’s your SPOILER ALERT

Marquette and Brooklyn (I think is her name) had the lowest number of votes, and the judges went with the audience vote again this week.

sally, they will stay with the same partner (unless their partner is eliminated) until the top 10, then they will be paired with All-Stars. At least that is what I thought they said once.

I think Valerie is doing great…I see a whole lot of improvement in her technique. I actually think she might be my favorite girl. At least to me she is the most memorable and I just want to pull for her. I was really surprised to see Tanisha (is that how you spell her name??) in the bottom three. I think she is really strong, though her “look” is a bit off-putting to me, somehow. Sad but true.

I thought it was interesting that Nigel brought up the other judges harsh criticism of the girls while leaving the guys unscathed. It was funny when the girl started dancing I just said watch out - that judge goes after the ballerinas, she’ll get nitpicked. Now she’s not in the same category as mia michaels who seemed to hate certain dancers like danny tidwell, but it still comes off to me as unbalanced.

The only dance I thought Marquet was good in was the first one, in his own style. I enjoyed the two half-group dances.

Let’s just say it. She’s not conventionally beautiful. But that is one reason why I enjoy watching her…because when she’s dancing, she can make you think she’s gorgeous. That is how I felt about Torville and Dean’s Bolero. (Yes, I’m dating myself.) Jayne Torville looked about as ordinary as a young woman could look - but on the ice, during Bolero, she looked like the most desirable woman alive.

Have you seen old video of Nigel as a dancer? Not the most attractive guy.
