T&F Recruiting

I am a sprinter and I am talking to multiple D3 colleges, including a couple NESCAC and SCIAC schools. However, I recently ran across NYU, who has recruiting standards (the others don’t have standards). Does meeting the standards mean an automatic slot on their team or is it just the opportunity to get a pre-read? Any information would be helpful.

Fill out questionnaire, connect with coach.
Standards do not mean an automatic slot. Coach may already have enough athletes in your event. Only coach can answer.

Thanks for the info. This is already after I filled out the questionnaire and the coach contacted me, I am currently awaiting a reply back.

You need to figure out where you are with the coach. Is he offering you a slot, which would help with admissions? Is he offering a spot on the team if you get into NYU on your own? There really is no way to know without asking the coach.

How many sprinters may NYU coach be looking for? Looks like they have a dozen fr, so sprinters and one did well at championships. Good luck!

Well as of right now I would be the best on the team time wise (the sprinter who did exceptionally well is graduating)

So I know nothing about athletic recruiting but I an an NYU parent. Here’s a snip from a recent college publication that might be informative:

“Beckman said that as a Division III school, athletics play no role in the admissions process at NYU.

“[O]ur athletic teams are populated with students admitted through the standard admissions process,” the statement reads. “At NYU, the Athletics Department is not empowered to prescribe that certain students be admitted, nor do coaches have direct contact with admissions officers about particular candidates whom they may be interested in having for their teams."

I had seen this…he stated this in many interviews during the Rick Singer investigation/legal action early this year, as NYU received $300K from Singer’s foundation (no charges yet at NYU).

If this is true, and I take him at his word, there are NYU coaches that are not being straight with recruits. Maybe there’s wiggle room in ‘no direct contact’ between coaches and admissions…perhaps there is a Dean/staffer that is a go-between. AFAIK there are no DIII schools where a coach is ‘empowered to prescribe that certain students be admitted’.

Thanks! That’s really good to know. The coach seems to go through the same process as other D3 schools I’ve seen but I’ll definitely keep this in mind.
