Taking the Facebook Plunge . . . Help!

The most useful feature you need to know is how to remove people from your newsfeed. This doesn’t unfriend them, but it keeps you from seeing every development in their busy lives if you don’t want to.

Echoing what dmd said above, you do need to keep an eye on your privacy settings. FB often adds functions and always chooses as a default the least private setting. Another very useful feature is that you can create groups within your friends list and then customize the privacy settings for that group. For example, if you are “friended” by people and you don’t want to share your family photos with them but neither do you want to offend them by ignoring them, you can create a limited profile group and block them from almost everything - your wall, your photos, etc. I did that and even put up a few dummy photo albums (picture of my dog!) so they would think they were seeing my photos. Also on the subject of photos, whenever you put up a new album, you need to check that it is set to be available only to friends or only to friends except the limited profile group. Lastly, be sure that you have made your friends list private. I made my family list only show to me, not even to my other friends. There is a way to preview your profile and what you basically want is for random strangers only to see your name, nothing else.

Addicting…very lol

This article reminded me of this old thread…(the sign of a true CC addict, I know)

Friendly Advice For Teachers: Beware Of Facebook

I have a friend that is concerned about the privacy issue, as she is a local public figure (business owner in a legal field, not an attorney). She created a Facebook account using a moniker rather than her actual name, then went to all her family members and sent “friend requests” including a short note, “This is Suzy Smith please add me to your friend list” - before that she opened a Yahoo e-mail address using the moniker rather than her actual name, so that Facebook searches do not even include her personal e-mail. Voila! She’s got a Facebook account that her family (and a few select friends) can connect with her through. Her “profile” picture is a cartoon. There is very little chance that someone can discover that “Mary Margaret” is actually Suzy Smith.
