Tales of late arrivals for SATs / other tests

@payn4ward Don’t forget extra batteries for the calculator!

Took a wrong turn Saturday morning on the way to SAT subject tests at a non-typical high school. Siri needs to speak louder!! Kid started to freak out, but we still got there in time.

Reminded me of driving to my own SAT test eons ago, back when you typically only took it once. Got a flat tire halfway to school. No time to change the tire, so I drive on the flat for miles. All the time with helpful other motorists waving and pointing and telling me I had a flat. As if the loud clumping sounds and 10 mph speed had not clued me in. Got to school with smoking shreds on the rim.

Did well enough on the test, but would have preferred to use the adrenaline on the test rather than in the car. I still have the occasional stress dream/nightmare about that day.

@northwesty - in my family a story like yours would be legendary. Every kid that was born afterwards would have grown up hearing it from the cradle onwards. But then again, the idea of only taking the SAT once sounds about as real to our kids as a world without cell phones so they probably wouldn’t appreciate the drama.

This is the tale of woe and anxiety of a family friend:
SAT attempt #1: Morning of test, suddenly"sick". Stayed home, missed the test. Amazing recovery later that day.
Attempt.#2: Told her parents she took the test, but skipped out and went out to breakfast. Parents discovered this when her score results were “delayed” and they called to find out why.
Attempt #3: Arrived on time, with all needed ID and tools. Threw up all over her own test, thus invalidating it. Was not allowed to finish that particular test.

That last attempt was fall of her Senior year. She is attending a test optional college.

My D took SAT subject tests last Saturday. Right before they started she ran to the ladies room and dropped her phone in the toilet. Not the best start to her day.

paynforward: we do the ziplock thing too! I think of it less as spoiling and more as setting a good example  Hopefully, they will pack a ziplock for their kids someday!!

Many decades ago…chemistry regents exam. For some reason I thought it was in the afternoon. My teacher called me at home after I didn’t show up. I ran for the train (missed the last express) got to school with less than an hour to go on the test. Got an 87 (I may be wrong on the exact score after 30 years)!

Me driving my kid to the ACT at 7:15 in the morning and being very cavalier about the school location (“I totally know where this place is!”) and then realizing, as I was driving, that I did NOT know where I was going…in fact, I was not even thinking about the right school and now i had to figure out how to get there. In 17 minutes. Without letting my son know what was going on.

After he ran into the school (1 minute to spare), I had to sit in the front seat and put my head on the steering wheel and thank whatever god is up there that he led me to the right place at 7:44 a.m.
