Hmm, calmom, I’ll have to talk to her, but I don’t think she tweets, but of course would know how.

Off to that awful place aka O’Hare.

she will call us on her cell upon landing. :)

Me either! Luckily you don’t have to. I never joined Twitter and am not an official “follower” on my kids’ Twitter pages; you just need a link to their page. Added benefit is learning what all the friends are up to. It’s all very public and you don’t have to join, like Facebook.

Lurking on this thread is making me feel better. DS is leaving for a semester in Barcelona in early January, and I’m a nervous ninny. He doesn’t know anyone else in his program, and the whole cell phone thing has me flustered. I’m sure it will be fine, but reading about other kids traveling around internationally with no trouble is helping me to feel better!

DD has been to Brazil, china, Taiwan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Chile, Turkey, Peru, Armenia, Canada, Argentina - queen of free travel. What saves my anxious soul is her - she doesn’t tell me the tough stuff until AFTER she resolves the problems. Plus SKYPE - skype is wonderful. I’m learning to relax, and you guys should, too! ;)

Cell phone thing had me flummoxed too, but I got her an unlocked quad band phone usable all over the world. We have a UK pay as a you go multi-country sim card through Cellular Abroad and she bought a local sim card when she was in Austria. Mostly we communicated via Skype while she was in Vienna, but with a local sim card she could keep in touch with friends and classmates at a low per minute rate. When she travels she uses the multi-country sim card (the UK based one) that I can keep the balance on.

Home safe and sound. We do the cell phone and Skype thing too, but I still like to see that the plane is in the air, and not in the ocean or whatever.

She says she doesn’t tweet.

LAF–Your son will surely meet people in the orientation and things will likely go well.
My D doesn’t know anyone in the Madrid program she is going for, but will be living w/her uncle, so I’m really covered there, and her older bro. lives there as well.

Time to catch up w/D.

Thanks to all and safe travels for all the kids.

Wouldn’t text messaging be safer / more secure than twittering? Twittering lets the world know your whereabouts.

Oh great, now British Airways is going on strike. Of course that’s the airline S is booked on… the strike is supposed to start 12/22 and last 12 days, which means it would end 1/2. S’s flight is 1/7. But who knows?

UGH.

Laf,

Keep your fingers crossed. It is the cabin crew debating the strike, I think, with sporadic slowdowns to take place before the 22nd, and only if no agreement is reached, I think. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you, but perhaps if your S contacts his program/school, they are already making contingency plans.
