TASP 2020

I’m not sure I want to apply for TASP.

It’s not that I don’t think I would fit in. It’s just that I’m worried my essays will be bogged down by grades.

I have some grand ideas for my essays and, since I’m a pretty prolific writer, I know I can pull them off. I just don’t know if my decent essays will be prioritized over average marks.

Can anyone give me advice?

@5toryt3ll3r tysm!
@wistfulwords are you saying that you have a lower GPA? If it’s 3.8+ uw I think you’re fine. Regardless, I hear that TASP doesn’t take stats into much consideration and mainly just care about essays. Personally if I had below a 3.8 though (esp with semester finals coming up), I’d focus on semester finals first to get my GPA up for college apps. I would still try and apply for TASP.

@wistfulwords I wouldn’t worry too much about GPA. Apparently they focus mostly on the essays. Still, I’m a little worried too, lol! My freshman GPA was kind of iffy, so it’s hurting my overall GPA a bit… But I’m sure it’ll be fine!

@wistfulwords people have gotten into TASP with C’s! They prioritize the essays over everything, so you should definitely apply :slight_smile:

Hi! Another TASP hopeful here. I really hope I get in, as I’m sure everybody does, because it sounds like the most incredible experience. Wishing all of you the best of luck!

Hello! I’m applying to TASP this year from South Korea. I’m a little nervous because it seems like there are limited number of spots available for international students. I did hear about one Korean student who got in, but Korea’s pretty competitive and if it means one or two student gets accepted, I know I definitely won’t get in. Does anyone have any advice for international students or have any idea of the number of international students TASP usually accepts?

Also, would anyone be interested in providing feedback for the essays? It would be great if a former TASPer could give me some pointers…

Hello!

In the essay question 3, do I have to write two essays, one for part A and one for part B? Or, just one where I answer both parts of the question?

Thanks :slight_smile:

I just wrote two separate essays because I think it makes the most sense that way.

Another question: What are you guys writing for the “What extracurricular activities do you participate in? Please note any leadership roles.” question? Should I just list each activity and my leadership role or should I elaborate? I only used up about 50 words when I listed all of the activities so I feel like I should elaborate more? Or is that not necessary?

@worldpainter02 I worked with a TASPlicant from South Korea last year who got in! It’s definitely possible :slight_smile: I do essay critiques, so feel free to reach out over PM here or email (info@myivyeducation.org)

@stressednewyorker First of all, I feel your username. Second, two essays is the way to go.

@highsckid It’s good to describe a little bit about what each activity is and why it’s important to you, to give them a better sense of how it’s shaped you into the person you are today. Hope this helps!

I just realized that the topic I picked for essay prompt #2 is the exact same as a topic for one of the seminars . . . should I change it?

@wontonandrice I don’t think you need to, as long as your spin on the topic is unique. But you might want to try narrowing the topic a little–the seminar topics are pretty broad, and it might be hard to write your TASP essay on one of them. Obviously, I might be wrong, so take my advice with a grain of salt–just another applicant here :slight_smile: Good luck!

For the second question that asks about a topic/idea you are interested in, should we cite sources and treat it like a research paper? Or is it more opinions based?

@gianna10 Honestly, I’m wondering about that too. I don’t really want to cite sources, but I have a feeling it might be a good idea just in case… What do the rest of y’all think?

@FlameAlchemist I talked to a friend who’s also applying to TASP and he said that he’s going to cite sources just to be safe. Honestly, I’m not sure at this point but I think you should add them if you have space left.

Is anyone else over word count :frowning: I’m at 1800 for my first essay, haven’t started the second, and VERY over for my 3rd. This is going to be fun lol

Does anyone know if we can edit our applications after the due date? Results for a competition I entered come out shortly after the TASPlication is due, and if I win something I would like to include it under the awards section

Probably not - for all of the other apps I’ve done, the deadline is a hard deadline. You could prob think of a way to slide it into conversation during interviews if you try hard enough though

does anyone have any examples of past essays that got accepted? also, how much do awards matter?

Heyy! I sent in my application today. I am also an international student. I’ve never written an essay in my life, the task was a bit complicated, but I think my essays are good for the first time. If I’m not invited for an interview, at least I can blame it on the essay haha.

@adventure21 best of luck!
