I see -thanks everyone.
My sister in law got audited for her non cash donations. They disallowed them because there was not a list of the items. I have some bags of clothes ready to go and plan to have the organization sign the list as well as give me a receipt.
Keep in mind too that the value is your estimate. The charitable receipt is confirming that they received the item, butt they are not verifying or signing their name to the value just by providing the receipt. This would not be the case if it’s an item of a large enough value that it’s worth it for them to have it appraised, like if you are donating art to a museum, but Goodwill is not appraising your clothes.
Yes, I also plan to list the values using one of the online tools mentioned in the thread.
Interestingly, my SIL said it was not the IRS who did her audit but Some organisation working for the IRS. Probably cost more to audit her than the deduction she’d have got!
Did your SIL have a lot of non-cash deductions?
My husband just got back from visiting his sister for a couple of days and I asked about this. I was wrong, she was not audited and it was not disallowed (comes of getting info 3rd hand). It was some sort of survey done for the IRS. She was told in future she should make sure to get a signed receipt and attach a list with values and have the organization sign that also.
That’s my plan for the stuff I have ready to go.
Thanks
