Tazorac for Acne

mom55 - my D had cystic acne which can result in scars. You asked: Any suggestions/comfort on helping a kid with acne?

What did help my D was having a facial about every two weeks. You have to make certain your D sees a trained esthetician, or aesthetician. The aesthetician will use steam to open pores, can do extractions of white and blackheads and will suggest products to help moisturize the skin if the Tazorac dries it out. In my D’s case one of her dermatologists (we eventually saw two) and aesthetician recommended Dermalogica products - they have a great moisturizer that helped when she took Accutance and later when she used Tazorac.

Today at 19 my D still has breakouts - but only during her cycle - before and during. She uses an over the counter Dermalogica acne product during this time. She still sees her aesthetician when she is home for visits. She’s used the same aesthetician for about five years.

And as for the aesthetician - as a young teen I found my D listened to her and followed her recommendations as far as skin care. The aesthetician was in her mid 20s and much more cool than either I or her dermatologist!

Today my D’s skin is flawless. My D remembers that during high school after all of her skin problems her skin actually looked better than those of her friends who had less breakout problems. She took better care of her skin - followed a skin care regimen - washing with an anti-bac cleaner, using a good moisturizer, and was careful about the quality of makeup and skin care products she used.

How do you find a good aesthetician? Are they licensed in California?

kollegkid - I found this article about licensing. It’s from 2003, so it is a bit dated.

As to how you find a good aesthetician - Ask your friends - ask your mother’s friends! We found ours at our dermatologist’s office. They had an aesthetician on staff and when she decided to go into business for herself we went to her new location.

Most full service spas usually have licensed aestheticians and so do some beauty salons. Keep in mind that many aestheticians who work in beauty salons actually lease the room from the salon and are self employed.

If I was going to see an aesthetician for the first time and didn’t have any recommendations I would ask my dermatologist or find a full service spa. Just be certain to ask if the aesthetician does extractions. If they do not - then they do not have the expertise to help someone with acne. Extractions take more time and can be uncomfortable for the client so not every aesthetician cares to do them.
