Like the rest of you, I am anxiously waiting the results of my TFA application. I had my final interview on February 14th. The interview process didn’t stress me out too much as I recently went through a very similar process with Denver Teaching Fellows and was offered a slot in their program, however, a family situation required me to move out the Denver area.

I think we should all be confident in the skill sets that brought us to this point. I wish all of you nothing but the best as we anxiously wait for March 6th to arrive.

@Bookaddict, I noticed that in the Oklahoma region, you can take the masters route at the University of Oklahoma starting your second year of teaching (requiring a third year in TFA for completion). It also states that you can obtain a masters online through University of Missouri. Do you know if corps members are able to begin the UM masters during their first year? And have you chosen the certification route or are you working toward your masters?

@Plb, welcome to the club! I totally agree, it’s an honor for all of us to have made it this far and I have high hopes for everyone on this forum. It’s a great feeling to be surrounded by other passionate people who truly care about educational inequality.

I chose the certification route (I’m actually working towards a masters/school media specialist certification but not through a university partnership).

The University of Oklahoma masters route is for a degree in education administration, which is why it requires more teaching experience. I’ve heard some great things about the program! The University of Missouri one is just a general masters of education, but yes, you can begin it your first year (actually, your work at institute can even count towards it).

Also, I forget the particulars, but if you go to a local university to get a masters in any subject, and then continue working in Oklahoma for a certain number of years, I think you can get reimbursed for your entire tuition.

That’s excellent, thank you for the details! I definitely want to pursue my masters if I get into the program. I initially knew nothing about Oklahoma when I first started prioritizing my regions. I wouldn’t have dreamed of placing it in my high priority list, but I read that it had great community support for being such a new program and had decent higher education options.

Are others planning on pursuing the masters options if their region offers it?

I am definitely hoping to take the masters route. I am really hoping for a placement in South Louisiana. The website says: The Louisiana State University Graduate School has reaffirmed its commitment to offer tuition exemption scholarships to Teach For America corps members teaching in Louisiana. The exemption lasts two years and covers all tuition expenses for full-time and part-time graduate programs, with the exception of medical and law studies.

I just got a response from my recruiter about a few questions and this is what she said about Transitional Funding:

“The transitional funding status does not having anything to do with acceptance into the corps. If a status has changed to complete, that just means their file and info has been reviewed, not a guarantee that they have been accepted and thus get those benefits. Selection checks are still happening all this week, so final acceptance has not been set on.”

It seems as if they haven’t made any final decisions yet as of this week. Just interesting to know!

They have roughly 1000 people to place in multiple regions, which entails many details: openings in specific regions listed, subject area to teach, and whether they can become certified in that particular region are a few. A lot of people are already accepted. My interviewer informed me that the decision on who is accepted is made early, however, it is placement that takes up majority of the time during this process.

Good to know. I kind of figured that it wasn’t possible that they still hadn’t made any decisions, but it is at least nice to know that transitional funding status doesn’t confirm or deny acceptance.

Is it March 6th yet??? JUST OVER A WEEK!!

I’m finishing up the essays for the Rhode Island Teaching Fellows application right now. I’m halfhearted about it because I’m really hopeful about TFA, but I must soldier on.

husker090, I’ve heard the same thing. A TFA alum told me they decide pretty early on who they are thinking to accept. And acceptance into the corps isn’t solely based on the final interview. I’m not sure how much weight is given to each.

i feel like they know who they want to accept early on in the process, because i think they work with some formula. I remember from the final interview webinar when the woman said that we weren’t competing against each other, she said something along the lines of us having enough points or something to be accepted into the corps. I am sure by now they’ve made acceptance/rejection decisions for the 4DL applicants

I emailed the Grants and Loans offices today and I received an “out of office” reply.
The email they sent said that their next office hours would be Thursday March 15 2012 from 7-9pm. I was confused by this. Does this mean they aren’t making anymore transitional funding decisions until then? Or are they making all of the decisions between now and then and they are using those hours to respond to emails?
I was just confused by the fact that they said they would be out of office until Thursday night!
Who knows!

Yeah I agree with a lot of what you all said. I don’t think Transitional Funding status hints whether or not someone has been accepted. (Even though I wonder why they would bother to check documents for people who will not be accepted, if it just adds unnecessary work…) @oa0176 what do you mean by “points?” That is interesting! I’m confident that we will all make it… I mean it takes a certain amount of dedication and desire to find this blog and check it daily! I really can’t help myself when it comes to logging into the application center and checking my funding status anyway Oh March 9th, where art thou???

I can’t help but think if your transitional funding documents have a yes by them then you will get accepted. It wouldn’t make sense for them to verify the documents of people they are rejecting. It would be hours and hours of extra work! However, I do agree that just the status changing to complete with no “yes” by any documents may not mean anything.

chikvicious, I sent you a message saying I completely agree with you, but I meant to reply on here. Sorry! The recruiter for my area e-mailed me back today. I wish she was like, “Hey, you’re in!”

No status change for me today Did anyone else have a change?

Zettibetti, my status hasn’t changed either. Don’t feel down though. Remember other people had their status change the day before or even the day of notification! Laine, I think that just means they’re busy working on 4DL stuff and won’t be answering other emails. It’s probably a ton of work for them to do placements.

Laine, I agree with chikvicous that they are probably unable to get to e-mails right now because of the placements. I am sure there are more than just a few people doing the placements. Was it nice to go back to school today Laine?? It was DEFINITELY easier for me!!

Chikvicious, I know, I know. I just hope it happens! I cannot imagine everyone’s status changing on the same day. I am just going to buy my ticket to AZ for their teaching fellowship program. If I get accepted into TFA, then I guess I will have a lovely weekend in AZ. I really want TFA thought because they help with the transitional funding immediately!! That’s what I’m nervous about!

After seeing this thread for a while, I’ve got to chime in if only to calm my nerves! I had my final interview in TX recently and am waiting on pins and needles for March 6 to come around. I think those who’ll be accepted might find out on that day shortly before the deadline of 8pm ET. Some accepted friends of mine found out ~6pm Central on acceptance day for the deadline previous.

Zettibetti going back to work was the best thing for me right now! Today flew by and I only checked my transitional funding status four times! Haha a record low for me!
