Mississippi delta?

No…Louisiana…about 4-5 hrs north of NO

I’m going to be in south Louisiana and I am pumped!
LSU offers tuition free scholarships for anyone teaching in louisiana’s corps. Incredible opportunity. If youre interested in a masters stick with it!

I will be finished with my master’s next month. It’s more of an issue of being able to live off the pay. i really don’t think I can.

What is the cost of living, though? The average teacher salary in Oklahoma is one of the lowest in the country, but because cost of living is relatively low, I live very comfortably.

Of course, it also depends on what other expenses you have. I’m a young, healthy single with no debt, and so that definitely helps.

And what you have to pay for tests/certifications definitely varies by region.

I wish I was debt-free. I have student loans and obligations such as my pets (they must go wherever I go) and regular bills (car, phone, insurance). The cost of living is low but the 4k for certification scares me when I think about my plans when 2 years has passed. I guess I never considered the possibility I would end up somewhere where I would be taking a pay cut. Silly me.

Hello Friends,

Anyone have any resources for study guides for the Praxis II - Secondary Math. I keep reading that the study guides out in the bookstores are WAY too easy compared to the tests. And generally not too good.

Thanks folks!
EAL

PotCM, I would look into the logistics of the certification a little bit more! At first, I was shocked when I read that you will have to pay around 4K for certification, but adding up my own certification costs right now…I ended up paying that too in Connecticut. The thing is…I only had to pay about $500 up front for certification tests…another $500 came a few months later for an online course, as well as a few hundred to the state…and I pay $2500 for classes at the partner univeristy, but I am on a very manageable payment plan.

I am almost positive you will not have to pay the $4000 right away.

Also, I agree with BookAddict! The salary may be low, but the cost of living usually corresponds to your pay. Connecticut pays a fairly “high” salary, but my rent is also very high (and don’t get me started on insuring vehicles in this state!). I also live very comfortably. My advice is to check out craigslist in the area…see what the average rent is.

The 4k comes out at 400 per check. I will research some more before making a final decision.

Sounds like a good idea. Also, keep in mind that, assuming TFA remains an Americorps program, you get loan deferment, and an over $10,000 education award. That certainly will help your student loans!

That said, I’m certainly not trying to convince you to accept TFA’s offer. TFA isn’t worth falling into financial hardship for. While I do believe the achievement gap is an urgent and important problem, there are other ways besides TFA to help solve it. Plus, your time in TFA will be tough enough. You don’t want to have to add money worries on top of everything else. So while I think that, for most singles, TFA is monetarily feasible, I’m not going to argue against you thinking carefully about it before making the commitment.

My friends who are in regions where the cost of living is lower ended up saving a lot more than I currently am.

~ Bay Area on $36k and a $10,000 certification program plus a car loan, TFA loan, and student loan, but I make ends meet.

Hey guys,

I’m new to this forum but I was accepted this past week to go to Indianapolis to teach secondary science. I’m a senior chemistry/history double major from Case Western (which is in Cleveland for those who don’t know ha). I still haven’t formally accepted but there’s a >90% chance I’m going to within the next few days.

Has anyone else on this forum been accepted to Indianapolis? Also, I’m curious as to how people are feeling about getting into this program. Does anyone have any concerns or doubts? I’ve read plenty of criticism and a couple horror stories about TFA, but on the whole I feel pretty comfortable getting involved.

There are always questions when you begin a new adventure but you need to determine for Yourself if the good outweighs the bad. For me, no matter the criticisms or bad stories I’ve heard I know that the adventure is what I make of it. I’m so excited to join the corps and head to Baton Rouge. I’m from Cincinnati and am very familiar with Indy. It’s an awesome city and the it was the city everyone was talkin about around the Superbowl.
My advice is go for it! But you must evaluate it yourself .

I’ve heard the same thing for sure. That’s why I want to do it. Also going to a new place outside of Pittsburgh (where I’m actually from) and Cleveland to meet new people and have new experiences is a big plus for me.

I also believe in the whole idea of TFA and I feel I’m the right person to do it.

Where are our 5DL applicants getting excited for the 14th?

@Laine, I was wondering the same thing!

I’m feeling better about accepting after some phone calls to the TFA staff. They’ve been helpful in getting more specific information regarding the area and fees. I’m feeling less frightened about going somewhere that’s so rural. lol

There is nobody form Deadline 5?? I am waiting to see if I make it to the final interview tomorrow! I am excited :)

i’m from D5. I finally post on here after reading posts for several months. so amazing to see the different emotions, transitions, and attitudes displayed on here. hello everyone! i hope I get a final interview.

@PotCM, did you go ahead and accept?
