@texaslove12 I would have loved to hear more about the priority regions I chose. Sadly the damage to our area by the tornados has caused much disruption to the internet, let alone land line, mobile phone, satelite television and cable television left without much other than our battery powered radio until about an hour ago.

Thankfully no one was hurt here but the damage to property is devastating. The hubster is a member of CERT so he’s off helping those who need him.

Our outages were nothing compared to what he’s dealing with, so a a missed Webinar is not a worry right now.

I may be out of line here and feel free to call me on it but worrying about whether we are accepted or not, wait listed or not seems to pale in comparison to loss of life, loss of homes and loss of jobs due to the destruction yesterday.

Happy to get services back and hope the hubster doesn’t have to deal with too much carnage and all that implies as well as all the CERT members who have been called out.

@BookAddict, thank you so much for your reply. It’s great to hear how supportive everyone is, and that you haven’t been made uncomfortable–makes me think about changing my preferences and putting more priority regions in.

On a related note, do you know anything about which regions are more “well-run” than others? I’ve heard from a lot of TFA CMs that what region you’re in, how your region’s staff behaves, etc. will massively impact your time in the corps. I know you can’t really talk about experiences other than your own, but what’s the general reputation or consensus regions have among CMs? Are some regions “easier” than others? I ask that while acknowledging that it’s doubtful any region is really “easy,” but it’s something I find myself considering as the deadline to change preferences grows nearer.

I don’t mean to come off too selfishly, but I don’t want to be living one of those TFA horror stories floating around the internet if I am accepted…

Thank you again for all the helpful information! :)

@BookAddict: If I do happen to get a position with TFA and in fact placed in that area I will defiitely contact you, thank you! You’ve been a lot of help!

@tfaoldster: Oh no! That’s horrible! We had some awful weather here in our area too yesterday but there was no damage done by the tornadoes where I live. Only about 30 minutes away however, there was some damage. But everyone is okay! I agree, things like that really put everything into perspective. If you check out the TFA Admissions Blog (which has been super helpful) they post the webinars there and today’s webinar on High Priority Regions will be available there tomorrow.

rustyhalos - Yeah, I can’t speak too much for any region but my own. I’ve been generally pleased with how things are run on TFA’s end, though it’s been a little more difficult through my school. Other people may have had less satisfactory experiences, even in the same region. I know some people have quit, and some of them have felt that TFA has been less supportive than it could have been. When I thought about quitting, though (and I will admit that there were more than a few times that I did!), it was due to the difficulty of the work and not due to any dissatisfaction with TFA. But I think it helps that Oklahoma is a relatively small region, even if we are expanding. Please feel free to PM me if you want to hear more specifics!

Just one week left everyone! We can do it! :D

I guess we would of been chosen by now since next week they will be matching everyone who got accepted. I wonder whats the fuzzy science behind the selection committee of evaluating candidates. I heard everything from a point system to a holistic view of the candidate…

eeeek! yes, since we can’t change preferences after the 6th presumably that is when they start matching us if we’ve been accepted. hopefully next week goes by quickly!

it would be so awesome if they emailed us this week and said: you’re in, we’re finding a place for you; or, you’re rejected. the waiting is killer! :)

@texaslove12 although it is politically incorrect, a big hug to you, thank you for your concern and the information. Hoping to see the hubster sometime next week, he’s filling a very different “gap” at the moment.

@BookAddict, thank you and by your screen name I think we have a lot in common.

@ssadiesades LOL, I agree about the wait but it’s only a few more days. Contingency plan well for me as a true oldster I’ll continue what I’m doing as dull as it is and then check out other teaching alternatives and Americorps initiatives.

To all, how do you feel about being accepted, given a “tentative” placement and then having to interview with multiple schools and/or districts?

Getting into TFA doesn’t mean you’ve necessarily got a job. A principal still must hire you. Check the TFA member blogs for stories about those who finished Institute but didn’t get hired for months…

Every region does placements differently, but in most, you do have to interview for a job with the district. Generally, you are placed by the beginning of the year, but there are horror stories where CMs waited a long time to get a job. Of course, even once you get your initial assignment, things can change at any time, but that’s just the nature of teaching even outside of TFA.

Tulsa is nice, because we were placed by the district without interviews. I guess that means there’s a larger chance of your principal not liking you, but it does mean that there’s one less stress on you because you don’t have to worry about interviewing.

@rustyhaos–I did not. I listed Memphis as a preferred (but not highly preferred). After viewing the webinar it seems that memphis is not a high priority area anymore. I’m debating about whether or not I need to list Oklahoma in my preferred list.

so candidates who listed a high priority region in their highly preferred section received invites?

My transitional funding status has changed to “complete,” though there’s nothing under “documents verified by transitional funding.” Is this consistent with everyone else?

I’m trying not to freak out, because in previous rounds there was someone whose status changed but did not eventually get in, but I hope it’s a good sign! Note, I haven’t checked the status for a few days so not entirely sure when it changed.

Bubblerj, I took it too and passed Not to knock people who don’t speak Spanish but it should have an effect on admissions since you have so many Latina/o children in the underprivileged communities served by TFA. This wait is killing me!!! I need to get a draft of my thesis out asap and I can’t focus!!! Ugh!

Congrats to bubblerj and NYRicanGirl for passing the Spanish test! And I agree with NYRicanGirl - the need is great and you guys should probably be favored if you have that skill!

Thanks Waltzindreams I think it should be only one of many factors to be considered… How’s everybody holding up? Only six more days to go and thankfully, the weekend is upon us which should help two days go by quickly :-)
