Teacher Recs with Spelling & Grammar Errors

I think a lot has to do with the relationship the GC has with the particular teacher and the teacher’s personality. If it’s a good relationship and an easy going teacher then I don’t think it would be a big deal if the GC pointed it out. I would actually leave it up to the GC to decide whether to talk to the teacher or not.

momof2011, My real question is why you chose not to waive the right to see the letters. Most college advisors recommend that you do, since colleges tend to believe that teachers are likely to be more honest if the right to see the recommendation is waived. Yes, the “someday” on the common app could theoretically be afterward the application is submitted, but if you are already giving up the advantage gained by waiving the right to read the recs, chances are slim to none that you would NOT have read them ahead of time.

I wonder if it’s possible to go to the teachers, tell them you have just now discovered that you made a strategic mistake and ask for new recs, since you still have the time. They could choose to send the same or a different letter at that point. The guidance counselor could still use her discretion in dealing with any “typos.” I imagine that happens all the time in a school where letters are first reviewed by the GC (ours are sent right out by the teachers).

At this point I agree with kathiep, in that what I would do under the circumstances would depend on the personalities of all involved.
