Telemarketers: how do you get them to stop?

My husband has a different last name than me, so whenever they call me Mrs. Smith, I know it’s a telemarketer and I say I’m not Mrs. Smith and I hang up.

Any charity asking for money (and that includes my alma mater), I tell them I have a policy of never giving money over the phone, and they need to send me something in the mail.

Had an interesting conversation with Planned Parenthood just last night. They’ve been calling a lot – but when I pick up I get an automated voice apologizing for the fact that they called me but can’t talk to me right now. (Oy). Got a human voice last night, and told them to stop calling me. The guy said: “but we’re Planned Parenthood, and you’ve supported us in the past.” And I said – “and I’ll continue to support you in the future on my terms and in the mail, and if you keep calling me during dinner time my mind might change and you really don’t want that to happen.” We’ll see what happens tonight …

In general, I am not nice to telemarketers and hang up really quickly.
