Tell Me About Your State Fair

Coureur you may think the animals are enjoying it, but they are not. Same with the circus.

Spend the day in your cage and report back.

parent, I assume you are a farmer?

I do that five days a week. My cage is called an office. And I wish I had State Fair animal pampering to go with it.

I’ve been to the Maryland State Fair once. It was okay but I don’t like fairs in the summer - too hot and sticky. Our little county fair where I grew up is what I like. It was in October so I associate fairs with cool crisp weather and feeling the cool air on the rides - not smelly, hot and humid.

I just spent the day at the Great New York State Fair yesterday! My lemonade was made from fresh lemons oh yes and while I would have enjoyed a slushie made from some yummy Finger Lakes wine from the Montezuma Winery to go with our famous Dinosaur BBQ out of Syracuse, NY I was driving and could not partake lol.

This year’s NYS fair is really fabulous. The lineup of free shows is amazing: Bruno Mars, Big Time Rush, Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro, Chef Curtis Stone, Trace Adkins, The Script, Hot Chelle Rae, Steel Magnolia, Hinder, and more. Many acts that you would pay good money to see you can see for the small price of admission to the fair. For me this year it is not a matter of when to go but how many times! Actually, my daughter dances in the yearly talent showcase contest so I end up going several times a year.

Again, can’t agree with the ‘abused animal’ scenario, at least I haven’t seen it at the New York and South Carolina State Fairs. I suspect that particular show animals, like bull steers, swine and sheep wouldn’t appear so docile on display if they were being regularly abused.

LOL, this made my day. :)

“I suspect that particular show animals, like bull steers, swine and sheep wouldn’t appear so docile on display if they were being regularly abused.”#26

beaten into submission? if it doesn’t ring a bell, google

I like the smaller Evergreen state fair better than the western wa fair which is one of the 10 largest in the country.
Haven’t gone for a while, since my kids have been in 4-H, but it is just the right size to walk around and feel like you saw a little bit of everything.
I especially like to see the veggie & fruit displays and the little kids with their chickens, rabbits & goats
( both my girls volunteered at the zoo & it was the 4H club that took care of the ponies through the fall-spring- however, they were not allowed off of the zoo grounds so the animals that were shown at the fair were privately owned.)

I loved going to the Texas State Fair. When I was in high school, I belonged to the Future Homemakers of America club. Why, I don’t know, but anyway, we went to the Fair one year and saw Debbie Reynolds in “Annie, Get Your Gun.” I remember thinking it was cool, but she was OLD! LOL, that was 1979, so she was 47!

Maine doesn’t have a state fair, but there are lots of county fairs. They are a big deal here.

NC has a big state fair that lasts for a week every Oct. There are lots of carnival rides/games, every kind of food imaginable including homemade ice cream courtesy of the cows at NC State U. and fried twinkies Lots of animal showings/competitions, homemade food competitions, big name entertainment on stage nightly. S1 is an NCSU alum. Going to the state fair was an annual event for him and his friends. I haven’t been in years. Maybe we’ll get there this year.

Well, “Doggies of the Wild West” wasn’t really worth the 30 minutes. But the deep fried apple pie with cinnamon ice cream was excellent! And D1 picked up a bag of black walnut taffy to sustain her on her trip back to school.

The Missouri state fair is way too far from St. Louis (Sedalia? what the…?). <<sad face=“”>> . STL has its own fourth of July thing that they call a fair, but it ain’t. I grew up with the KY state fair (in my hometown) which we always enjoyed. My sister still goes every year, and just last week regaled me with this year’s fair in an email. I was jealous. I’m resolving now to go to KY next year and attend the fair with her!</sad>

I like Michigan’s state fair but we rarely go because the drive to detroit is less than pleasant. We have several street fairs and similar in my area over the summer which have food, rides, shows, etc and those are generally more enjoyable. But I got to see Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper at the Michigan state fair a few years ago, so that made me happy. :)

I have attended the California state fair maybe once, although I have lived thirty minutes away for eighteen years. I always WANT to go, but it is usually so insanely hot in Sacto in August. Not this year though. I know a lot of FFA and 4 H kids, and those animals are their LIVES for about eight months a year. I do think they get sold in the end though, and I imagine they end up eaten.

Our State Fair is a great state fair.
Don’t miss it. Don’t even be late.
It’s dollars to doughnuts that our state fair
is the best state fair in the state.

Who’s the better singer MidwestMom, you or Pat Boone?

Emaheevul07, I believe Michigan stopped having the state fair near Detroit a couple of years ago. It was not a money making proposition, and the state didn’t want to fund it. There was always a separate state fair in the upper penninsula, so now there is only a Michigan state fair in the UP (Escanaba). So you might have to head to Ohio or Indiana for the closest one now. :)

That really surprises me, since the Texas State Fair is the most attended fair in the country and is a pretty big deal. Of course, I live in Dallas, grew up in a neighboring suburb, so it was convenient.
