Tell me the best book you read in 2010

Cutting for Stone (closely followed by City of Thieves) was the best book I read last year. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was interesting, informative, but not the most memorable book I of the year.

Gluckie–I’m a fan of Lee Child and Harlan Coban too. Also like Michael Connolly and a half-dozen other writers in the same genre. While I enjoy reading these, (they’re like mind candy) after a while I get the authors/plots/titles confused and just remember that I like the protagonist or the author’s writing style.

Best in 2010 - Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.

Currently reading American Rose - fascinating biog of Gypsy Rose Lee.

Cutting for Stone was m favorite.
Couldn’t wait for freedom to end. Really didn’t enjoy it.

bromfield- I know exactly what you mean about getting them confused. I sometimes read a book halfway through before I realize I have read it before. I wish I had started keeping a list from the beginning…irritating when I buy the same book twice. At least I am consistent. :-)

Cutting for Stone and the Book Thief are amazing, but I read them before 2010 :).
I would recommend The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer, a long, completely enthralling tale of a Hungarian Jew in Paris and Budapest during the second world war; The Bells by Richard Harvelle about a castrato; and The Girl Who . . . series.

Ok, this one may be controversial, but I liked- The Lacuna, Barbara Kingsolver.

(of course, The Help, and Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann are up there as contenders, which you already know,if you’ve been following Mary13 great CC book discussions )

agree completely. I’m reading it right now and can’t wait to be done with it. what a collection of completely unlikeable characters!

^^^I agree…in fact, I can’t get myself to finish it.

Finished Freedom, but thoroughly disliked it. I did, however, enjoy The Corrections.

^^same. that’s partly why I was looking forward to Freedom.

Also liked the Lacuna.

The Help.

I also hated Freedom.

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell

I loved Room, The Irresistible Henry House, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Help, Let the Great World Spin & Secrets of Eden. I liked the Shadow of the Wind, but not the last third. I am also a Harlan Coben fan - when I need something that requires no real concentration. I did not like Wolf Hall or Freedom. Maybe there is something wrong with my attention span

One thing I discovered is that as much as I like my kindle - some books need to be real books. The Immortal Life, for example, was not well suited to the Kindle. I wanted to go back and re-read sections, and it is a pain in the butt to do that with the Kindle.

The Help had me enthralled. Zeitoun was a powerful book, also profoundly disturbing, if you like to think you can trust your surroundings. Let the Great World Spin was a very satisfying read.

Just started re reading Mennonite in a Little Black Dress. by Rhoda Janzen. Fun, witty and references a subculture I know little about.

I have The Help at the library, waiting to be picked up!

Just read Little Bee. Wonderful, touching, painful, all at once.

Room was a book that was hard to put down.

I really liked The Help…but I did not like the ending.

I read all 16 of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich…not “classic literature” but they were the most fun of anything I’ve read in a long time.

Tea Party Revival: The Conscience of a Conservative Reborn (The Tea Party Revolt Against Unconstrained Spending and Growth of the Federal Government) by Dr. B. Leland Baker

I had no idea that the whole tea party thing is very socially liberal. This book is an easy to read overview of the movement.

Anyone read Ender’s Game? It was definitely one of my favorites this year.

Gosh…I liked so many books this year.

The Book Thief
Sarah’s Key
Cutting For Stone
In the Sanctuary of Outcasts
Zeitoun
The Lacuna
Let The Great World Spin
The Last Child

Can’t remember them all! Now I have to think! Read the Help awhile ago…maybe this year or last, Faithful place by Tana French was interesting, The Girl Series…hmmmm will think of some more!
