Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

Welcome, Jmed, to the wonderful land of Oz.
I know your feeling, I joined CC just for this thread. (:
So…seminar-preferences, what were yours?

man, i want to go back to TASP! i am insanely jealous of all of you.

hello st.hudson! yes, i went to UMich last year. “race, space, and the american self.” yes, it is amazing and no matter how you imagine it, it will probably surpass all your expectations. i talked to a couple of TASPers from the year before and all their stories made me a little bit scared that i would go in with high expectations only to be slowly let down, because of all the full-blown mysticism surrounding TASP. i think the best thing telluride could have given me were 17 people who i would grow to love, and to live with and to learn from, and it did. it helps if you go in not knowing what to expect, because it only makes the experience all the more worthwhile.

panic: i loved your talent show! and i’m happy TASSers are applying to TASP :]

Hi all  I feel a little connected to TASP by reading these…before the dreaded rejection email ends it all…

Seminars…Cornell I, Michigan, Cornell II, UT Austin

Hm…things about myself? I don’t have a favorite political philosophy (which might say a lot about me?). I love learning and theatre…umm…

Theatre is fun! Straight actor, musical theatre…?

What did you write your other essays about?

I’m a little amazed that so many people seem to like Cornell I… That was pretty much the only seminar that I wasn’t crazy about.

Cira, Globalization is what my Human Geo. class is currently talking about. If my teacher is to be trusted, there are three opinions on Globalization: the first is that of the “Hyperglobalist,” who believe that Globalization will render sovereign states inefficient and thus unnecessary; “Skeptics,” who basically believe that the Hyperglobalists are idiots and that Globalization is just means for more efficient trade and nothing more; and, lastly, the “Transformist,” which, if I got the name right, is right in the middle, being all fickle-like.
What are your opinions?

I love straight acting but as of late I’ve been doing more musical theatre. How about you?

Critical Analysis- A Single Pebble by John Hersey
Problem/Topic- Learning for learning’s sake
Conflict- a family/small town thing
Future- I honestly have no idea what the heck I want to do
Book List- about a page of random things I’ve read over the past year

I’m not sure how I feel about my essays. I finally got sick of over analyzing what TASP wanted and just wrote them.

More of a skeptic… I think that globalization will continue to break down traditional culture and probably make people all over the world more alike, but who knows if they’ll realize that. People still feel connected to their state and feel national pride, even if they work for a company based in another country, eat food grown in other countries and use products all made in China. If anything, it might increase nationalism, because technology allows use to work more flexibly from home, so it follows that fewer people will have to move for work, so regional ties have a chance to be built up.

What’s your stance on learning for learning’s sake, Jmed?

Straight acting, but I kind of need to learn how to sing. Public singing is an annoying phobia of mine.

You’re an actor, Cira!?

Well…that essay was one of my least favorite. It was mostly based on my experience in my small town high school that is extremely lacking in motivation. There, most of the teachers just want you to get a 65% to pass. It’s not about gaining knowledge. It’s all about getting a proficient on your standardized tests so the state won’t take over the school. No one enjoys learning simply to experience something new. And it makes me sad.

Have you done any plays recently?

Honey, there’s no such thing as “straight” acting. There’s only regular acting and bisexual acting. Even among the ladies.

3 days 3 days oh-em-gee-squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! explodes from sheer force of TASPness

I’m hoping you’re kidding. :-P

I like to act, I don’t know exactly if I qualify as an actor. I don’t do it enough. Too few plays around here… ): It’s a good thing for me, I think it really helped me get over my shyness. This year we did Our Town, in which I had a really terrible part. ): No fun. I hope I do better next year. I’ve gotten shafted the past two years. The director actually apologized for giving me such a small part. My school also puts on a one-act play festival, which is mostly for the people who aren’t serious enough for the fall play… It was pretty awful this year because our director was monstrously mean.

“I’m hoping you’re kidding.”

Of course not. I went into Drama Club an innocent; I came out Porna.

We’re doing Pirates of Peznance at my school now. It’s a musical that absolutely no one except a girl I loathe had ever heard of prior. Now the school is populated with pirates.

We actually emailed TASP, porna. Well, not “we,” but one of us did, I just can’t remember whom. Sorry to whoever the hero was!
Anyway, we found out that we can’t call 'till March seventh this year.

Ahhhh…I wish we did a fall play. We have a spring musical and that’s it. This year we’re doing West Side Story.

Sorry about your director :-(

Lovely! Gilbert and Sullivan! Are you enjoying it?

The theater downtown did that a few years ago. It seems like a fun show… My singing friends enjoyed it a lot.

I can see how the drama crowd could turn you into a Porna.

I wish we were doing West Side Story. We’re doing Hello Dolly. No one knows exactly what it’s about, not even the people in it. We did The Wizard of Oz last year, and it was a crazy show.

It was The Paper Crane, Donny. How do you feel about globalization?

Now that I think about it, some one I know is in drama, and she reminds a lot like porna. Hmmm.
Just what is this club doing to America’s teenage girls!?

whiiiiiiiiiiiiine But I want to knoooooooooooooooooooooow! Oooooow. Oow.

Yes. I’m a daughter. I get to be raped and pillaged. Best of all, one of the pirates pillaging me is my good friend The Gay Mascot (also known as John). I’m being kidnapped by a gay pirate. All my dreams have come true.

Well, except for the ones about speaking German and creating the Revolution of Ze Pink Triangle, but one can’t be greedy.

oh thanks roam, i remember your seminar it was the one that wasn’t really about anything that you thought it would be.lol.

and that is really sad about your school jmed. i’m happy there are actually people interested in Cornell I.

Hahahaha…I’m not exactly a fan of Hello Dolly. Wow! The Wizard of Oz? Who were you?
