Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

hey, mebbe instead of PMing all over the place, we should post our essays after the deadline on this thread.

feels soooooooooooooo good to get TASP essays out of my head! now only rejection. sigh

yeah, i could use one of those

Haha okay, I don’t mind sharing the topics I wrote about. Most of them were really teenage-y and personal, but hey, at least I really cared about them.

Critical analysis: I analyzed the Chicago Tribune editorial criticizing the Austrialian Santa Claus company for banning “ho ho ho.” I thought it was really funny, but I thought it was more straightforward because the text was shorter and I could really address all of it.

Problem: How judgmental everyone is in high school, and segregation/teen drinking/cliques. I just think it’s all really ridiculous.

Conflict: My tenacity when I was pressured by a guy in a relationship

Future plans: Hi TASP, I want to go to college but I don’t know what major yet. And I’d love to get into Brown, but I don’t have a list beyond that. And I’d love to be either a journalist or a lawyer.

Seminar preference: I want to study the environment or global south; I will probably be shot for my ignorance about the Caribbean/Hollywood’s view of blacks.

Booklist: My debate periodicals, some of my teenage romance books, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, a few classics, definitely some school books

I would rewrite my conflict. I just hate how its so cheesy!
I applaud anyone who managed to make their conflict not-cheesy.
I would say my future plans one, but I can’t think of a way to make it any better, haha

I like my critical the best cause I really liked the book (The English Patient) and I enjoy analyzing books if I like them.
You might have noticed that before I had given an example thesis from the English Patient for school, but I ended up not using it! so I decided to use it for TASP, since I didn’t read the book for school, the assignment was just like, compare this passage we read in class to a novel you’ve read outside of school. Lovely book. I neeeeed to see the movie. The essay was about national identity, and how Ondaatje portrays it as inescapable. (which is debateable, but I have good evidence =P)

My problem/topic is kinda wierd. its about the fashion industry. counterfeit items and shizz. I took some classes at FIT last summer so I have first hand experience from proffessors who are designers who complain 24/7 about that. lol

My future plans is that as of now I want to study history or sociology with a minor in art, but I have no clue career wise

My conflict ahhhh. its so stupid. so for lang we had to do memoirs, and I wrote three roughs and this was on of the ones I didnt do for class, and its basically about cheating. or rather, not cheating. haha. so yes, very cheesy. I’m iffy though since it’s written memoir-style, and theres not tooo much analysis in between but a paragraphish at the end. were yours just analyzing the situation?

booklist was crazy. I CANNOT remember all the books I read during the summer. like I was writing my seminar essay and realized “omg I just read Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. why the hell didn’t I include that!?” haha. I definitely left stuff out. And I realized a lot of the books I read have been made into movies. and at least 50% I read before the movie came out. interesting.

what were your seminar choices?
mine ended up

  1. UT Austin
    2)Cornell 1
  2. Mich
    4)Cornell 2

shuffle i want to read your problem/topic essay

“Mover and shaker”…lol But I actually put nada on the academic interest. I hope they don’t think that I’m not intellectually curious. :frowning: Today’s just not my day.

JJUYA: Yes, they’re going to go: Wow, look at the submit time. REJECT!

spikypufferfish: Haha, that’s a great critnal idea. And I too put Harry Potter on my reading list!

alamode: I know! The conflict essay just begs for cheese. Maybe they rate them based on the level of cheesitude. Whichever is most original and least cheesy wins! (Mine definitely does not win…)

I put the onion as well! hahaha

If i had the chance, i’d probably redo my future plans essay. I should have focused more on the plans than their origins. It just seemed easiest to go through my life chronologically showing how events had influenced me, but i don’t know how well that’ll work. I had the hardest time writing that one, writer’s block in every paragraph.

I’m also a bit worried about my issue essay and my critnal…most people seem to have done stuff that’s more creative or says something about them and their views on an issue that’s especially prominent in society. Mine’s really more academic than pertinent to modern times, and so’s my critnal. the issue essay was a critique of a kantian philosophical doctrine and it basically ended up posing the idea that there might not be a universal moral law at all. It was aimed towards the “issue in a philosophical field” part of the prompt. The critical analysis was on the interplay of metatheatrical commentary and social allegory in The Tempest and how that affects the strengths of the play as Shakespeare’s last individually written work. I ended up really liking both papers, and the others are much more personal, but i’m a tad concerned they’re going to think i’m too focused on classical academic ideas (especially with how inventive people’s critnals have been sounding). Any thoughts? I don’t even know anymore haha.

And i have a habit about songs on loop too…that’s the only way i can get something written, because it distracts me if the song changes. I picked a new one for every essay, and now i associate whatever i wrote about for each one with a particular song. And i’m a perfectionist about my essays, so the play counts on all of the ones i picked are really high too. Ah, the joys of this application!

finished ans submitted, roughly 55 minutes ago. It’ll be funny if i actually get to the interview stage.

omigoodness

JUST finished the critnal. and it is badbadbadbad. and so redundant. but I had to turn it in because midnight struck for me just about fifteen minutes ago! and then I got to the page that said what time it was sent and it read 9:59 pm… so apparently they’re going by west coast time GRRRR. but whatever. everything happens for a reason.

now I have to read three chapters in my apush book. goody.

ooo posting essay topics sounds fun… but I really should be going… bahh whatever I’ll go with it.

conflict - where I fit in with Christmas since I’m not christian
problem/topic - how we are not created equal and that society is just one giant competition
critnal - kafka’s a hunger artist
future - haha I have no idea what I want to do in my life, so I just kinda joked my way through it
TASPs rank: 1. Cornell II 2. Cornell I 3. UT 4. Michigan

good night, and good luck all

First post btw, so it’s nice to sort of meet you all.

Critical analysis: I analyzed Slaughterhouse-5.
Problem: The division in America due to partisan politics
Conflict: I was mugged one summer and it took me a long time to deal with it.
Future plans: Law, journalism, and politics.
Seminar Preferences: Cornell II, UMich, UTAustin, and Cornell I
Book list: It was pretty random. Gregory Maguire to Michael Crichton and Vince Flynn to Pearl S. Buck

Hey, Everyone!

My first post in what a month? Lol.

Hope everyones app went well, I just submitted at 11:56:33, so I cut it close.

D-Yu: It sort of depends on the person, but I would generally advise against just posting your full essays up on here. While everyone in this thread is chill, The outside CC world may not be.

Ateamsteven: A friend of mine, and fellow tasser, wrote their critnal about Slaughterhouse-5. Cool.

I guess a brief rundown would be:

Critnal: “Civil Disobedience”. Sort of a call to action mixed with the justice of treason and the need to uphold the “social contract”

Conflict: Really personal, I wrote a letter to my father. I havent let anyone read this one yet. (I quote the Bible though. That was a first)

Issue Essay: Feminism! (Well it was titled "Why I am not a feminist…) Basically my societal commentary and a call to action for people to be more conscious so as to bring fundamental change. That probably makes no sense, lol. You have to read it.

Future Plans: How I have finally found a conducive environment through the Obama campaign, which has allowed me to better shape my passions and aspirations. I also touched on how the future is excessively uncertain and that I hold very little in it.

Seminar Preferences: Cornell I (am i the only one), Cornell II, UMich, UTAustin (Stated I would not want to attend due to the format of the seminar)

Book List: I listed B-itch magazine under periodicals. Its a long story.

And academic interest… Hey “nada” can mean well anything. Or nothing I guess, but hey thats why the essays are whats important!

Critnal: Assessing the theme of pursuing an ideal through art in The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Conflict: Wrote about how politics kind of kept me out of the national team for debate and how I had to choose between confronting blatant corruption or not screwing myself over.

Issue: Agricultural subsidies and the imposition of values / decline of self determination in developing nations

Future Plans: Talked about my interests for majors (math and economics), not so much about career.

Seminar Preference: pretty boring.

book list: pretty short haha

Do I know you lobster? Cause you sound a lot like a girl in my school, which is a bit bizarre.

GAHHH! Thank God it’s over!
My essays (for anyone who cares):

Critical Analysis: I analyzed the theme of sexual curiosity in Perrault’s “Bluebeard.” I was actually surprised with how well it turned out.

Conflict: Terrible. Utter drivel. I wrote pretty much the entire essay in an hour before submitting it; it’s not even a real conflict. It’s sort of about I’ve preserved my religious faith (somewhat) in face of a materialist society, etc.

Issue: American misinterpretation of communism; I read it out loud to myself and it sounds kind of weird…

Future Plans: I basically invented a lot of excuses as to why I have no idea as to what I am going to do with my life…

Seminars: 1 - Cornell II, 2 - UT, 3 - UMich (I live too close to it), 4 - Cornell I. I actually really liked Cornell I, but I have no prior knowledge in the area.

Book List - about 25 books, half of them for school.

If anyone is interesting in trading essays, feel free to PM me! I’ll trade anything but my conflict (it’s too embarrassingly bad)!

Critical: I though it was kind of boring, edited from something i used in school. I analyzed how To Kill a Mockingbird portrayed mankind as fundamentally good.

Problem: How we should reform the education system

Conflict: Dealing with stereotypes and judgment

Seminars: I was really tired when i did this, it’s very VERY informal, not deep in anyway, its as if I was just talking about it casually. (environmental health: I don’t know much about health, but i could learn a lot, so maybe.)

Future Plans: Basically rambled about how I had no idea what i was going to do then ended by saying how I wanted to be an inspiration. I’m so lame lol

Booklist: I don’t read much… so there wasn’t much on it

baadass: i dont think you do giant for one is a guy. lol

critical: how slaughterhouse 5 was a fantastic example of a antiwar book (lame i know)

problem: the negative effects of western society on it’s people

Conflict: dealing with my culture

seminars: cornell 1, cornell 2, texas, umich

future plans: wandering around my medical aspirations, nothing solid though

booklist: about like 15 books (luckily a decent number non-fiction)

So, I’m reading the TASP 2007 thread, and basically it’s making me super nervous about whether or not I’ll get an interview…

GAH! I wish I could know right now about the decisions!

disney: youd be dissappointed for longer though.
