Hello Everybody! My OOS S24 was notified that he was accepted (EA) to Temple for Mechanical Engineering back in November. He is really excited, as he loved the experience he had when we visited the campus during his spring break last year. We haven’t heard anything about whether he was admitted to the honors program. It looks like people received notifications in January. We checked the portal and didn’t see any new notifications or updates. Are they still making decisions? Do they notify the student via email or just post something in the portal? Thanks!
My kid got snail mail about the Honors program, but didn’t get an email and outwardly, nothing on their portal changed. But if you kid goes to their original acceptance letter on the portal, it will have been amended to reflect Honors admission.
Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to share an update. D24 was between Binghamton and Temple and the college visits were such an important part of the process. We did not visit Bing before applying and after her acceptance made it a top priority. On paper, Bing was the perfect school. After the visit we realized that we were wrong - lol! It did help us realize that she truly wanted a more urban environment and bit bit more rah rah from a school spirit perspective.
Our first visit to Temple was in the summer so the campus was very quiet - yet she still felt it was at the top of her list. So we decided to go again yesterday (after checking out St. Joes) and this was the best thing we could have done. We walked around campus a bit and it was so busy! We witnessed a sit-in in the student center and even someone evangelizing in the middle of campus (talk about unexpected - and I will add we are not religious - I think she was just fascinated to see this in the middle of campus). We also visited the son of a friend of mine to see the apartments in Morgan Hall. I must say, housing at Temple looks pretty fantastic! She loved it all. She also loved that there was a Septa stop right on the corner of Morgan (along with an Insomnia cookies and Panda Express in the Lobby of Morgan North).
As a mom, I will add that security was noticeable outside of the dorms and the campus itself was very busy and felt safe.
So it looks like I officially have a Temple Owl! Good luck to everyone with your decisions. I know that what my daughter wants in a school may be very different than what your child wants - so that is why I wanted to offer our perspective. As a FYI she will be a marketing major.
Thanks for this (and congratulations!). C24 visited Temple over the summer, too, on a very rainy day. They didn’t like Philly at all, and came out of the campus visit with Temple lower on their list. I’m trying to convince them to give it another look, because there’s a lot to love!
This is so helpful, thank you for sharing! Temple checks off so many boxes for our son. We have not visited yet-- going to an admitted students event in March. So many people are warning us about the safety of the neighborhood. How did you feel about it? Before our kids were born, we lived in NYC for many years, so are used to urban environments. Son is also considering Binghamton, lol! Congrats to your daughter!
We live 10 miles from NYC (and I am originally from NYC) so we are always there. She is used to an urban environment and knows to be smart. Honestly, she wouldn’t walk alone at night in our very safe town - so she certainly would not do it in a big city! I mean it’s Philly and there is crime. But Philly is such a great college town also. Security was also noticeable and it is just such a busy campus that I feel like there will always be students around looking out for each other too. And while the surrounding neighborhood is not great, there really is no reason to leave campus. Even the Septa station was right on the corner of the dorm she is most interested in. So you don’t even need to leave campus to get on mass transit. For me as a NYC subway rider my whole life, this is a huge plus!
I am not sure what you son is interested in majoring in, but Bing looked like it had very nice facilities for engineering. We didn’t go into all the buildings but we did see that one. If he likes the outdoors it also offers a nature preserve and lots of spaces for impromptu sports games and such. My daughter is definitely more “indoorsy” LOL!
We will also be at the March admitted student day event! I am interested in seeing the inside of the business school and other dorm options in case she can’t get her first choice.
Wow, that’s so great about the Septa! Definitely puts my mind more at ease. Sounds like using common sense safety precautions is the main thing. Son wants to be in a city (he goes to NYC with friends all the time), he’s interested in communications-- the Klein school at Temple seems terrific. We drove through the Binghamton campus on our way home from visiting Ithaca, and it thought it was very nice (especially compared to some other SUNY campuses). Temple seems like a better fit for what son is looking for. Excited to see it in person soon! I hear the food is great, too - another very important factor, lol!
Good luck! And yes - food everywhere including lots of food trucks!!
I wonder; how many of the people warning you about the neighborhood have actually spent much time in the neighborhood?
We visited the campus during our S24’s spring break last year and loved it. We were only there during the day, but felt safe the entire time. We even walked around the neighborhood before our tour (we had breakfast at Owl Breakfast and Lunch, a tiny no-frills diner). I will say that ignorance can be bliss, so maybe we just didn’t notice things that should’ve made us nervous, lol. And while you probably don’t want to be walking deep into the surrounding neighborhood by yourself at night, during the daytime, we felt fine. That said, you will come across some interesting characters in the neighborhood just off campus, but they are generally harmless and are not paying any attention to you, lol.
If you are comfortable in a big city environment with all of its quirks and “scruffiness” and have a good sense of situational awareness, then you should fine with the neighborhood.
Interesting to hear this, lots of great things on temple. Anyone feel like humoring me in a Rutgers versus temple commentary?
I am actually a Rutgers Alum!
One thing that has not changed is how spread out the campus is and the fact that you have to take busses to classes/dorms etc. At Temple everything is walkable. This may not be an issue for some students but it was one of the reasons my D24 decided not to apply. Also, New Brunswick has its neighborhoods to stay away from but overall is safe - especially the Piscataway side of the river.
Otherwise I am an RU fossil and am not of much help. I was a tour guide when there, so stupid RU facts live in my brain rent free. Like RU invented space shuttle tiles and velveeta cheese. They have quite the food sciences dept!
Exactly! And like you, perhaps ignorance is bliss, but I feel like I am relatively well aware of my surroundings spending my life in a big city. I also feel like I get the most “concern” from folks that don’t spend their days in very diverse circles, and frankly, I have limited conversations with these people for those reasons.
Thank you for posting this! Twin A was admitted to Honors but did not receive notification but found it in the updated acceptance letter.
Where in the student portal do we find their official acceptance letter? We looked just now and couldn’t find it. TIA!
It’s in the middle column labeled “Next Steps”. Click on “Show Completed” and then scroll down. You should see “Your Official Decision Letter” and be able to click on it.
Thanks to this community, I was able to confirm that our son was admitted into the Honors program! Our son will be a MechE major, which will be grueling enough in an of itself. As such, we are hesitant to add to this level of difficulty by enrolling him in the honors program.
Can anyone give us some insight into the benefits of this program? Do students in honors have better dorm options? Do they get the ability to register for classes early? Are the required courses that are specific to the honors program particularly difficult (our son is NOT into humanities type courses, lol)? Will having “Honors Program” on his resume have any benefit when trying to get a job?
Thanks!
We received honors invite by snail mail today. Exactly 3 weeks from scholarship notification
My D24 got into their Honors program and also received pretty good scholarship. We have not yet visited but very afraid of the environment there. Any experience with safety issues there. Many people say it’s unsafe as soon as we tell the name of the University.
Same concern, but people who have done has
Positive things to say.
Apparently special honors dorms, video of it in email sent out today
My son is admitted for architecture. We’ve heard safety concerns but I’d visit before I made any decisions. A lot depends on what you’re used to. I know a young lady from a very rural area who went to Temple. She never had any issues or anything negative to say. She loved it there.
