HISP-S 250EX means that you tested beyond HISP-S 250. So if you take the fifth-semester Spanish class, S280, and get a C or better, you will get six free credits total for HISP-S 200 and HISP-S 250. Since the placement test is now online, I am guessing that IU may no longer automatically give you four credits for HISP-S 150 if you test into second-year Spanish. They did give four credits when the test was done in-person oncampus. Maybe they don’t now, since it would be easy to cheat on the online test and test out of first year Spanish, take the four credits, and then don’t take any Spanish classes at all at IU. Not that anybody would actually do that . . .

Looking at the Spanish Department website, I see that they don’t mention placement testing credit for S150, so they may have done away with granting four credits for first-year Spanish. They don’t give credit for S150 for AP scores per this table, so I guess they did away with automatic credit for first year:

In any case, if you take S280 and get the C or better, you will get 9 credits total, which is a good deal for taking just one class:

S200 3 cr.
S250 3 cr.
S280 3 cr.

You can also take S250 if you want, but then you would only get 6 credits total for Spanish (assuming that they no longer give four credits for first-year Spanish through the placement test). 684 is a really good score for the placement test, so you probably would not have any trouble with S280. Congrats on you great score!
