Testing Advice from you Harvard prodigies?

man, im sorry. that 83 on the math exam’s gonna be the reason why you will be rejected at every college. although people say you can rebound, they’re lying. better start looking at jobs flippin burgers…

^
That’s way too harsh. It is still very possible to get into universities like Tufts and Tulane with an 83. It’ll definitely hurt his chances, but if he’s able to show that he can perform at a high level in other classes, he may still get in and have a very successful career at whatever he decides to do.

^ some people are blind to irony…

^ others, not so much…

I made a stupid thread similar to this one … and had people blame me for ■■■■■■■■.

I have since learned my lesson, so I suggest you do the same. :D

(Talking to original poster)

The irony in post #21 was readily noticeable but online posting simply does not have the same emotional and vocal nuances as spoken language.

^ How perspicacious of you!

(get it!..it is doubly - almost triply - ironic!)

@the OP: I don’t know if your serious but I will assume you are. Your a freshman, your grades are very good but don’t become too obsessed with them. H wants the complete applicant. Find a passion and excel. If you graduated with straight A’s in the most rigorous course load you have a chance at Harvard…so do the 20,000 other straight A students. You must ask yourself, “How am I different?”

@ the other posters: Let’s not make this is an off topic argument. Please try to keep the thread on topic or if you feel ■■■■■■■■ is occurring use the report problem post button.

Thank you!

I wasn’t going to get involved until I saw…

Like everyone else I assumed Saugus was being sarcastic with his earlier post, but I suppose I was wrong (or at least the joke is stretched a little).

Saugus, do you seriously believe that most students at Harvard have never gotten an 83 on a test in high school? Or would view a 94 on a test as a “slip up”?

As a senior at Harvard, I can confirm not only that I scored below an 83 on plenty of tests in my high school career, but also that the same could be said of almost any fellow student here. I don’t know any that would scoff at a 94 on a test. Calling an 83 a “failing grade” would definitely get you weird looks.

There are a number of reasons for this. One of them is that HSs vary in quality- a valedictorian at one school may not be more qualified than a 90% student at another. Another is that I guarantee you most valedictorians have scored in the 80s on a couple of tests. Foremost among the reasons is that Harvard isn’t looking for the students highest grades in the country. There’s a reason that even though they could fill their class with valedictorians, they don’t- there’s a lot more to the picture.

I truly hate calling out other posters, but I do think you greatly misunderstand the college admissions process. Good luck with your own applications! (if you’re in HS)

To the original poster (and, I wish, his or her parents) please get some counseling help, if your post is serous.

Admiral, your response is much appreciated, seriously. I was actually beginning to get worried. The immaturity of the other posters is unimaginable; I thought that at the age of most of you college applicants, you would forgo your childish taunting skills, and try to accentuate your good qualities. Perhaps you have none, hence your rejection from most schools. And compmom, if you really are a mom, I truly feel sorry and highly empathetic towards your children and husband. They are the sad victims and subjects of your attempted sarcasm, or obsessive orderliness…I have only one thing to say to compmom: Learn that at your age, you should not be on a college forum; you should be working and trying to maintain your edge of responsibilty in your family. Furthermore, never hinder curiosity. That goes for all the cynnical posters, about 90% of you. You should be ashamed.

^ Since when were you the sensible one?? You nearly *ed your pants over a 94%. Excuse my language but what the *?? And since when did you think that little freshmen in highschool can call out moms that have experienced so much more in thier lives? Do you think your experiences from your seemingly pathetic life allow you to make educated decisions over older and wiser individuals? You need a good hazing. It will put you back in your place.

We are beyond who’sensible now. Upron receiving such a low mark for my class – wait, actually you may not undestand this if you never learned about the Bell Curve. Ah, what they each kids nowadays…Have you ever heard of grade inflation? y 94 is like a 64 with 90% of the class getting 100s. Stop cursing, and stop puting over the fact that you are immature. You are attempting to feign what you are not. And “hazing” is looked down upon in most societies. If I were you, I would truly re-evaluate your reasons for talking down to an eager freshman such as myself, and, beyond that, re-evaluate your reasons for living.
Secondly, either that is a fraudulent mother, or one who is highly superficial and critical of the curiosity of others. At this point it could be either one or both. Thirdly, I am deeply “upset” over your repugnant suggestion I be hazed. Since when has hazing served a purpose other than admission into a fraternity? Pleas, sir, read and learn more about moral scruples and ethics before offending someone else who is yearning to learn about college. Hold back and hinder your sadistic thoughts that you so desperately need to blurt out, as they will serve no purpose other than make people view you as an emotionally immature, “attention-grabber”.

I will not be involved in a ***** fight with an insecure freshman. Your thoughtful insights pertiaining to life will be noted and trashed immedietly. Please refrain from exposing your insecurities on a public thread as they may–but have already–cause others to look down upon you. I will no longer encourage your unnecessary and over the top belligerent behavior.

P.S. With this new piece of information that your test was graded on a bell curve, I have lost every ounce of resect for you. You are right to be worried, because with this type of performance, nearly every elite university will be out of your tiny reach. And even if you manange to get into one, be ready for the hell you are sure to face when trying to keep up with the course work; it is not geared for the mentally unprepared.

You may respond, but I will no longer give an ounce of my time to a lost cause, and you are a lost cause.

^That’s what I like to call “■■■■■ fodder”
If you don’t want to dignify an instigator (■■■■■) with your time, don’t post

to the other posters, i’m just curious about these percentages. at my school high A’s in APs are very rare. In my AP physics class for example my teacher gives AP styles tests w/ very low curves. Anways, I happen to be val in my class with an average of about 93.

but to the OP, in freshman year, w/o AP’s and harder classes, you might want a higher GPA. If your SATs are below par, you could start thinking about them. but its more important, like the others said, to not be grade-obsessed. do things you like and do them well. If you have to grind through high school to get into a top school, it’ll be a very miserable 4 years. And even if you manage, it’ll be a tougher 4 yrs in college. And remember that people at cc are the overachieving bunch, take that into consideration. also btw, you didn’t really need to repost all those times. Well, good luck.

Thank you aisdufhb. You are the only one who addressed kindly your opinions on my mass posting.

Jacobtess, don’t worry about it. You are at a really competitive high school and adcoms will realize that. Just work hard and it will all pay off in the end. I am a firm believer that everything that happens is meant to be.

Harvard is not the be-all-end-all. First off all, its grad school is, not the college. Second of all, in a couple years priorities may change. Maybe you fall in love with a different school. Maybe you go to a different school for financial reasons. Maybe you just don’t get accepted. There are 30K people that apply every year. Every single one of them has a shot. Some have unbelievable accomplishments. At the end of the day, A vs. A+ isn’t going to be the difference. Do you think everyone at Harvard has straight A+'s? Nope. They could fill their entire class with all these kids with A+'s but they choose not to.

What this means is that they’ll take the kid with a couple A-'s, B+'s that wrote phenomenal essays over the “nerd” with all the A+'s. So, don’t stress over A’s and A+'s. Just understand the material and enjoy class. Stressing out right now is a bad thing because it’ll take away from you high school experience. Go out and smoke some weed, go to a party, chill with friends, play a pick up football game, watch the Olympics, and do things you want to do.

Of course, you should study hard for a test, but after its done with forget about it. I like to treat myself after a test by playing COD MW2 for 3 hours when I get home lol! So, of course, try to get good grades, but they are not the end of the world. If you want to top your peers, maybe start prepping for the SAT a bit. You could try to get into some summer program that’s really fun and interesting, which may help with college apps. too.

But the point I want to get across is that settling on one school for uni. is not ideal. I live in Canada, and yea, here you can be set on one school and get in with >90% average. So, like top 10% of any school will get into their top uni. choice really easily. The apps. are easy and everything…they only look at grades. If anything, we Canadians should be the most stressed out about grades (no holistic app. view here). In the US, with top schools, its a crapshoot. So, the only thing you can do it just try your best. DO NOT BURN OUT too early! It’s high school. Wants more important: Extra A+'s or being able to look back at high school while you are shoulder high in homework in uni. and being able to say “Wow, I wish I were in high school again. Those were the best years of my life!”?

Wait, people still haven’t figured out that he’s messing with yall?

this is quite a new species of ■■■■■, i’ve never seen a ■■■■■ retroll a trollee by claiming that they themselves have been ■■■■■■■.

metatrolling at its finest?
