Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

Not sure about TAMU, but I remember the UT admission guys saying its 6.00 for them, emphasizing the z-e-r-o z-e-r-o

Regular fall admission the GPA or rank cut off is end of Junior year.

For Spring auto-admission using entire high school rank. and for 10.x% best is calling admission to confirm. I heard contradictory decisions.

But very important - After senior year (end of May/June), your student should already been graduated with HS diploma, any course taken in the summer post senior (if in a college) may forfeit auto admission so do not take anything in summer or fall classes if your student plan to auto-admit in spring as freshmen, and some majors don’t admit spring students. If a student takes a college class after high school graduation, the only route to TAMU is transfer. And transfer doesn’t consider auto-admission unless it is one of TAMU pathways.

Only admitted Fall students can take classes in the summer prior to Fall enrollment at TAMU but that’s totally different take of the issue.

A friend’s son is ranked 6.4% and was just accepted to UT as an auto-admit.

Yeah my kid is a junior so I was trying to figure out if a summer class would be enough to boost him into Auto-Admission. Sounds like you’re saying that can’t happen.

WOW I was definitely told 6.0 by a UT admissions rep.

His school counselor contacted UT and they worked it out, so there might be some wiggle room there. He goes to one of the most competitive high schools in TX - maybe it helped.

Yes we definitely do go to one of the most competitive schools in TX as well…but I have very little confidence in our counselors based on my experience with my first kid. For reference my kid has a 4.5641 GPA, the top is 4.8 something. I don’t even know how it’s mathematically possibly to get to a 4.7. Straight A’s and all AP classes hasn’t done it.

I think I have read that kids take the electives in the summer pass fail and then load up with more AP classes. I think the term is “engineering the gpa”

Sounds horrible honestly.

My daughter has similar stats as this and applied in late October too - she was convinced TAMU was not for her based on what one friend said. We finally FORCED her to tour with us mid October and she fell in love.

She applied for biology and we are still waiting for a decision. She did get the email a few weeks ago saying that they were still reviewing applications, and included information about pathways and BLINN, both of which we would love. Crossing my fingers that we hear something sooner than later. whatever it is, I’m sure she will end up in the best place for her.

I put Public health as my second choice =)

@Henry91 what are your stats?

Are their scholarships for freshmen (university-wide merit or department), and if so, when are they awarded? At the time of acceptance or later. The website is a little vague and does not include a timeline. TIA.

I can completely relate. Our valedictorian last year had a 4.9 GPA and the one projected for this year will supposedly end up with an even higher record-breaking GPA. My little one will be applying to TAMU in a couple of years and I don’t know if he can pull off a 4.6+ which is needed to be in the top ten percent. He has all As but he’s had to take some lower-level (Honors) classes initially as a prerequisite, so like you said, it’s almost statistically impossible unless you play the game and CBE out of lower level classes. Someone suggested that we look into taking extra AP courses at UT virtual high school to boost his GPA. I will need to check with our counselor to see if the GPA would transfer.

I feel sorry for these kids but I will say, my older son got accepted to TEAB last year. (He wasn’t in the top 10%) He says his TAMU/Blinn classes are WAY easier than his high school AP classes were, so at least we know they’re well prepared!

@Intercoastal to be considered for incoming freshman scholarships, student must’ve applied/submitted scholarship form with application, by 12/1.
There ARE a lot of scholarships given, but the bulk given to NMSF (some Commended), auto admit very high stats/achievements, need based, those from identified Century Scholar schools and Corps/FTAB.
Scholarships appear in Financial Aid tab in Howdy, starting during February.

My older son was even further outside the top 10% and he was offered TEAB but chose to go to Alabama instead. He is loving it and very successful so far. I don’t think we have the virtual high school option but we have our own virtual classes and I think that’s partly how kids game the gpa.

I would recommend looking into a tutor for the SAT since it’s so hard to get into the top 10%.

My son scored an 1170 on the PSAT his sophomore year. He had his heart set on A&M because my wife and I are Aggies and his sister is a student, but even with straight A’s he was worried about top 10%. Over the summer between sophomore and Junior year he went to C2 for 60 hours to boost his score.

His first try with the SAT his junior year he scored a 1400 and was accepted holistically in October.

I understand that it’s not the cheapest option, but it put him over the top due to not being top 10%.

@Aggies96n97 :100: agree on test prep and getting as high as possible…it will definitely help! And do NOT wait until junior year.
