Your daughter can still apply to Tech! The deadline is May 1, I believe. They process applications very quickly. My son heard back within 2 weeks.
@SGTGold they would need all Mays pre-reqs taken, and no more than 60 total hours. It would be difficult to get into the Mays pre-reqs, if student is a COMM major; better off going Econ.
A&M is really firm, when offering PSA, they don’t look favorably on students who attempt to change majors once they get to College Station.
I’m not sure about TAMU not looking favorably with PSA students trying to transfer, and I believed that up until this semester. Two of my friends, former PSA, got their majors change requests approved that they put in for through Howdy, and PSA never even came up. Maybe it depends on the college/department?
I recommend that anyone interested in PSA or PTA join the “Texas A&M — Parents of PSA/PTA Students” Facebook page. The parents on there have kids who have gone through the programs and know them, and they allow students to join.
I hear where you are coming from. Not long ago, DS was going to be an holistic applicant with a low score already sent in. We were convinced that having a higher score could be the tipping point for him getting accepted. Kept taking SAT/ACT (about 4 times total?) till october and was admitted. Other son did truly horrible on ACT english but above average on SAT english (later thougn w/Khan academy a few minutes a day).
Maybe its too much pressure, but I encourage you to let your son know he may very well control getting in or not based on bringing up ACT/SAT and please try both, multiple times.
Daughter’s acquaintance told her today that she’d been offered Blinn Team (my daughter is still awaiting an answer - chose Team only on the 3 choices).
This was very surprising to me as the other girl has taken no honors or AP classes, and did so poorly on the SAT that she had to take the TSI - which she has also failed 3x. She’s not an athlete, no special recognitions, no “story” or great essay, no job, only one club as an EC and her GPA is not stellar either (definitely not top 10%).
My daughter came home from school feeling incredibly discouraged. She doesn’t think she’ll be admitted and now feels like Blinn Team is just handed out to anyone (except her, apparently). I have to say this all is quite mystifying to me.
The wait is wearing us all down and her earlier enthusiasm is gone. Just a terrible process from A&M all around, imo.
Considering they mainly take the core classes their freshman year, any of the PSA majors under Ag should be fine. Most of their PSA Majors require Business Math 1 and 2, Chem 1 and Biol 1, or some combination of those along with maybe Chem 2 or Biol 2. All of which are required for ANSC at A&M. Tarleton also has the equivalent for ANSC 107/108 (other systems schools probably do too), and can take, I believe, even if not an ANSC major. It’s also ok if the system school doesn’t offer the PSA major, they are basically ‘general studies’ there anyway. In my opinion I don’t think PSA is a dead end option even if the desired major is not offered. Mine did PSA and is thriving at A&M. I can say it was not an easy path, making friends at one school then changing was probably harder than anything else. Not going to advise one way or the other, just wanted to let you know it is doable.
@SGTGold Doing PSA with the intent to transfer is discouraged because there is no guarantee, that said, it is not 100% restricted, like it is for opportunity majors (at least yet, with the number of admissions going up, this could change). I would talk to an advisor and find out how difficult it is to change majors into Mays (regardless of PSA or not) and what other majors in different college depts offer similar degree paths or professional opportunities. Btw, you can request a transfer after the end of one semester, not a full year…
I know…I keep telling her that, but she’s dead set on being within 2 hours from home so she’s focused on Sam Houston. Tech is 8 hours away by car, but I’ve told her Southwest flies to/from here (Houston) regularly and we can fly her home a couple times a semester, but it hasn’t swayed her yet. I’m still working on her though, but I’ll have to give up soon because they start roommate selection in a couple weeks at Sam. I don’t want her joining a roommate pair only to leave that person high and dry by going to another school.
I think kids throw around a lot of stuff at school to save face if they don’t get in. I know a mom who continues to say her daughter got Blinn Team when we all know it was just Blinn. So please encourage your kiddo to just focus on themselves. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Anyone can request a straight transfer after completing a semester post high school and having 24 graded credits and meeting intended major’s requirements. PSA is a guaranteed admissison path with it’s own requirements and you do 1 year (typically) just like a straight transfer would.
Noone gets into tamu spring semester as a freshman transfer.
yep. Mine did PSA so we know the drill. my last sentence was just clarifying once admitted to A&M (at least as a transfer), one can change their major after one semester not after an entire year. the example mentioned requesting a major change after the sophomore year…
Oh gotcha… change of major not transfer. I didn’t read between the lines lol
But Mays change of major is 30 tamu hours plus other course requirements, so in that post they cannot change major after 1 semester.
Any chance the kid is just making it up? I see some really unbelievable stuff on Reddit sometimes, and with any additional probing questions it cracks.
Absolutely, will do. Thank you!
I saw a Reddit post today from an applicant that JUST checked AIS for the first time in a while and was questioning what the ‘3 options’ were!?! So, I suppose there are some that may be saying they got Team Blinn without realizing being ‘offered’ and being ‘accepted’ are 2 different things. Additionally there are those that don’t understand the difference between acceptance to Team Blinn vs PTA to Blinn.
I have explained the difference between BlinnTeam and PTA to Blinn to someone in my life and they cannot. understand. Honestly, that’s kind of a great sign for kids because no one cares after 9 months which pathway you take, as long as your diploma says TAMU.
It’s OK if the PSA school does not have the PSA major. They will put you in ‘general studies’ to meet the PSA requirements.
How competitive is the new Information Technology Service Management program?
