Texas A&M engineering chances

@Thelma2
Ok and one other thing: How much do they care about recommendation letters and a part time job? I’ve been working at a kumon for the past four months or so. And who do I email if I have questions related to the admissions process for this year? Does anyone have their email or should I look up the houston A&M correspondent?
Thank you.

Hey, I know you guys applied last year, and I was wondering if yall got in. Also, I have a bunch of questions. How are you guys getting internships from software companies? Also, these are my stats. I have a 4.1 weighted GPA, but my school is competitive so my rank is in the top 27 percent. I have a 1450 sat score. My EC’s are Debate-Went to state, Robotics(4 years), National beta club( you do events, and I did engineering), NHS, Helped make a website for the ap help during the pandemic, I did tennis for 2 years in school, I had a PC building summer job, and this summer I’m doing CS50 from Harvard, and SAP courses to show My involvement with tech.I want to apply as computer engineer, but IDK if I should apply to a less competitive major, and then switch into COmputer engineering, and also when I should apply.

Changing majors into Engineering is harder than getting in freshman year. Your GPA and SAT scores are great. Worst case, in my opinion, would be an academy offer. You show the background and academics to be able to handle engineering. BUT DO NOT try for an easier degree if you want engineering.

@AggieMomhelp Thank you so much, that really helps me. Also, is there anything I can do to make up for my rank, and also A&M took away Academic admissions this year so does that give more opportunities for people?

We do not know how the removal of the academic admit is going to play out next year. The bottom line is that it allows TAMU admissions more control over who they admit. But specifically what that means is anyone’s guess.

Most state schools in Texas have an assured admission matrix.

Example TTU:
Top quarter outside of the auto admits 24 or 1180
Second quarter 26 or 1240
Third quarter 27 or 1280
Fourth quarter - Review

Several years ago UTD did away with assured admission outside of the state mandated Top 10 percent. They made it clear that the vast majority of students that would have qualified for assured admission would still be granted admission. But they had noticed a certain band of students - in the lower second and third quarters that met the test requirements, but were not succeeding at the academic level expected at UTD. Admissions wanted the ability to look at the rigor and other factors on students academic record to figure determine if they felt the student would succeed at UTD. (State schools with the highest freshman ACT/SAT scores are in order UT Austin, UTD, TAMU)

I have absolutely no inside knowledge - but based on how the PSA decisions went down for the class of 2023 (HS grad 2019) we know that students that were not auto admit or academic admits were grouped together by major in the end. Even though TAMU does not admit students based on major. This current cycle, people coming off the reinstituted waitlist seem to be grouped by major too.

So I think they are beginning to look at students by major. Sort and look - but not yet use it it make admission decisions. I suspect at some point they will move to major playing a role in the admission process, even if it is still handled by admissions and not by the individual departments.

If you really drill down into the data - students from some counties have a 4 to 6 percentage point better chance at getting admitted than others. And in the common data set TAMU says geographical residence is more important than recommendations. So it stands to reason the percentage difference it not coincidental.

But by far freshmen engineering students have the best chance of getting admitted to TAMU than any other major. Though with the increase of applicants it is declining.

Here is the percent admitted that applied by college for 2019 and 2018
Ag 44% 53%
Arch 37% 46%
Business Admin 38% 48%
Education 41% 48%
Engineering 74% 85%
Geo 60% 67%
Gen Studies 100% (But that is the Gateway etc kids)
Liberal Arts 47% 56%
Science 53% 62%
Vet 68% 72%
Public Health 52% 57%

So only 37% of the people applying to architecture were admitted in 2019 while 74% of the engineering applicants were.

It terms of dealing with a less than desirable rank, TAMU says rigor, rank, test scores, extracurricular activities and talent/ability (meaning an athlete, academic, or fine arts standout) are most important in the admissions process. But like @AggieMomhelp says - I think at minimum you will get an academy offer, as long as you have the rigor.

@BlueBayouAZ and @AggieMomhelp. Omg, you guys are amazing! I wish i found this website before. You guys really helped me Thank you!
