Texas Icon passes on

Well, I’ll help you out with the definition of a classy individual. The classy individual is one who publicly refers to a recently deceased victim of cancer by derogatory names in a forum where others are grieving a lost personal hero. Ann Richards would follow your classy example, I’m sure.

Some quotes:

http://womenshistory.about.com/od/quotes/a/molly_ivins.htm

• The first rule of holes: when you’re in one, stop digging.

• What you need is sustained outrage…there’s far too much unthinking respect given to authority.

• Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous.

There are two kinds of humor.

One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity – like what Garrison Keillor does. The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule – that’s what I do. Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel – it’s vulgar.

Pots and kettles come to mind!

Xiggi, I am not from Texas, but my Mother is. I do not understand your reference quote- is that the example of spiteful cheap loud mouth or what…I have NO CLUE what you meant by sharing that quote…am reading the piece it came from and just don’t get the problem…

cgm, I’m now getting harrassing PMs…are you?

Apparently some people feel their comments are inappropriate for public consumption. I don’t, so I don’t have any use for PMs.

xiggi, to respond is sooo not worth my time

I got one, ignore him…I did send a response, but won’t again

Read some of the quote of Ms. Ivins…she was one clever funny lady

There’s a tribute at:

From the Observer- be patient- their server is a bit overloaded

for some reason longer posts aren’t posting- heres the rest

[quote]

Despite her failing health, and an impending ice storm, Molly insisted on being driven to the Observer

well heck I don’t know why it isn’t working
CGM how did you get such a long post?

not sure…must be the wind…but I went to the link

thank you

Big loss at my d’s college. First Julia Child, and now Molly. Sigh.

“She was goddamned smart, so smart she didn’t have to flaunt it. So smart that she could use the down to earth side to say what she meant so all of us could understand it. She didn’t suffer bullies. She loved Texas like a parent loves her child even after that child has gone on a three-state killing spree. She was unfailingly polite. And she could eviscerate anyone who was failing all of us with just an image or two. Those guttings will be desperately missed. That sense and celebration of the decency of the average American will be missed even more.”

Thank you, Carlmom. That was perfect.

Thank you, Carlmom. Lucky you, to have known her.

Our notably conservative local paper didn’t carry Molly Ivins so I had quite forgotten what a wit she was. I was saddened by her untimely death and even sadder when I heard the replay of the interview with Terry Gross and realized what I had missed all these years. I plan to look up her books at the library.

May she rest in peace.

That being said she always came across to me as someone who was ticked off and unhappy. Sometimes funny, but if you looked up mean spirited in the dictionary you’d see her face attached to the definition.

Well, voxdei, you have a right to your opinion too, but I just thought she was wonderful. I doubt she’s resting in peace though; more likely stirring up hilarious trouble on “the other side”.

VoxDei: Welcome to College Confidential’s discussion boards! I wouldn’t be surprised it we all soon discover that you and Ziggy share a wide range of opinions.
