I totally agree with AI detectors being far from accurate. I had to check something in a professional capacity, and ran it through a detector. It came back saying it was virtually certain the document was written with AI. Luckily, I checked several other detectors, and they all said it was highly likely that the document was actually authored by a human. Inconclusive results, to say the least.
One thing to consider is whether the AI detector itself retains a copy of the document uploaded to it. My understanding is that at least some plagiarism checkers do that, meaning they have access to what could could be a perfectly legitimate document and then who knows what is done with the document afterwards. I would carefully check privacy policies etc of these kinds of detectors to make sure that you know whether a copy of the document will be retained by the checker platform.
I am no expert in this kind of technology, so this is just a gut reaction. I would be curious to hear more about the document retention capabilities of these detectors/checkers from those more knowledgeable than me.
Sigh…technology is a good thing and an awful thing. AI can do so much for humanity and this world, but it can do so many damaging things too.
