Thanksgiving Poll: How important is the turkey??

danceclass, you absolutely must watch the movie Pieces of April if you have not seen it already.

Cartera45, Yes, I’ve seen it. Great movie! I tried explaining the plot and outcome to my daughter and her friend. I think memories of the movie helped me keep my sense of humor about the whole event. I was imagining the whole neighborhood crowding into her kitchen to eat the food we cooked in all their ovens (even the guys in the bar down the street, which was one of the places my daughter checked for a working oven).

The Lions didn’t collapse, mini, they got screwed.

Either way, the world will go on for at least another year.

I love cooking a turkey. I think it’s central to the holiday. And I also think it’s delicious.

The turkey is da bomb!

Anybody else make turkey soup tonight? While my cider-brined turkey got far too brown roasting, it made great broth. (I always re-roast the carcass for more brown bits…half hour at 400 ).
Made wonderful soup. I added the usual (carrots, potatoes, celery, noodles, turkey) and a SW flair with corn, Hatch chilis and TJ Cuban black beans. We will be eating this until about Wednesday…

Turkey soup here tonight. Simple, classic: rich, slow-simmered (i.e., all-day) turkey broth, to which we add nothing but diced onion, diced celery, diced carrot, thyme, a pinch of salt, then pappardelle egg noodles and diced turkey; salt and pepper to taste. Outstanding with warmed whole wheat dinner rolls from our local bakery, and a simple green salad. About as healthy a meal as you can imagine, and one of the tastiest of the year.

It’s all in the broth, which can’t be hurried.

no soup…but I did make a turkey sheppard pie , if there is such a thing

Mini, could you elaborate on why T-day was so bad for gay people?

I cannot agree with you about stuffing. Mine disappeared so,fast, I wondered why I don’t make it more often. challah bread crumbs help.

Also, Brussels sprouts promote such strong fan bases, I’d never mix them with anything.

Love the dressing and mashed potatoes, want to start doing those more often! I like turkey leftovers but had ham this year and it was really good too.

We made Barefoot Contessa’s turkey this year and loved it. Very easy. You cook a kosher turkey because it’s already brined. You stuff with a whole onion and garlic head. Then you slide white truffle butter between the skin and breast and squish it so it spreads out. That part was really fun. Then you brush it with olive oil, sprinkle with S&P and crumbled thyme. Then you tie it up with twine and bake it for 2 to 3 hours.

Sublime.

True confession. While I didn’t cook the turkey, I was so busy enjoying the sides that I (as usual) had little room for turkey on my plate and admit that today I am seriously thinking about picking up a turkey breast cause I’m missing the leftovers!!!

I made my own 20 pound turkey and all the fixings on Friday and had another couple over for dinner. A lot of leftovers so we still have plenty of turkey for sandwiches or a quick dinner. I started making turkey soup this morning in my humongous stock pot. :)

You HAVE to have the turkey!!! The sides make the day, but you HAVE to have the turkey!!

Turkey (oven) and everthing on Thanksgiving. A turkey (Weber grill) and everything on Saturday. In the freezer, there is a stray heat and serve turkey. You can never have too much dressing/stuffing.

Our gumbo Thanksgiving was delicious. I didn’t miss the turkey one bit.
