Well… they were kind to my favorite university, but did we really need another ranking?
Lots of state flagships and land grant schools – shows the value of public investment in higher ed and lower tuition for students!
Ursinus gets dismissed by many before doing an in depth look at it because of its name. I’m not saying that’s right to do, just that it happens - at least in the PA school where I work. That could easily contribute to their being underrated.
It happens to other schools too, of course.
I’d never put
CMU
Bucknell
VA Tech
Case Western
Oberlin
Wellesley
Fordham
or
UT Austin
on the list based upon my experience. I suppose in different areas folks might be less familiar with those schools.
For PA it wouldn’t have surprised me to see Washington and Jefferson, Juniata, and Allegheny make the list, but maybe they are better known than I thought. Their grads seem to do well, especially since many aren’t tippy top going in.
@Dustyfeathers my D’s top choice right now is Mills (junior year). We are trying to decide about visiting since it’s on the opposite coast. Worth the travel to visit or wait to see after she applies if she’s accepted?
@milgymfam – I’m going to guess that she will be accepted. I have a friend whose daughter has thrived there and another friend who is a grad, also loved it, but the FA can be hit or miss. Maybe see what the FA offer will be and then decide whether to go … . . ?
@Dustyfeathers she is going to be using the GI Bill- and they participate in yellow ribbon, plus we have a near zero EFC even with only one in school (I know that doesn’t mean much, but if they have any need based aid she would qualify). Being completely traditionally homeschooled means we won’t take for granted that she’ll be accepted anywhere. Thanks!
Since it’s the Indian edition of Business Insider, the list includes many universities which are not household names there. Still, CMU? UT Austin? Most folks in India who aim for colleges in the US would have heard of those for sure. I have relatives in India for whom this list would be helpful. They usually dont know names outside HYPSM and a few other big names.
ROI is an impoverished means of evaluating the quality of education.
