For me, it’s definitely a goal. That’s just how I work, one chunk at a time. Once I hit college, it’s grad school; once I hit grad school, it’s fellowships and graduation. After that it’s a haze, but whatevs. I’m not sure seeing college as a goal is /such/ a bad thing; from everything I’ve heard, it’s nowhere near the stress and pressure of high school. Hoping this is right, cause no way can I deal with this for another 10 years. Or at least 4.

Ok… The level of pretentiousness on CC just increased by about 30% after the creation of this thread.

The level of your face just increased by your mom.

^Ooooh. I’m sure he/she is extremely insulted.

Don’t tell wink I’m here, and don’t ask why not to tell.

I have to keep telling myself that I’m only a little more than halfway done with what I want for my education. Hopefully, most of it will be slightly more enjoyable than high school, or at least a little more mentally stimulating.

People, there are a lot of threads you probably think are useless, such as the “I think I’m in love with my best friends mom” thread. If you overheard people talking in a coffeehouse, would you go up to them and say “Wow, I think your conversation is probably the most useless, pretentious drivel I’ve ever heard. Please never speak again, you’re polluting the air with your thoughts.”? I realize that this is the internet, and that basic etiquette is not the at the forefront of most people’s minds, but the first amendment and its subsequent interpretations definitely give us the right to blather on about just about anything we wish. We’re really not bugging you all that much, it’s your own decision to read this thread, so please just let us talk in peace.

Ew…prole, what are you doing here?
And since when are you male??

Sorry, I can’t stay to chat long, because, after three grueling days of state-imposed standardized testing, I have to wrap up another APE paper for tomorrow. The terrible thing is that the freshman, sophomores, and seniors got two full days off, while the juniors had to get up bright and early (5:30!) to meet their fates in the examination room. Hopefully I will make a hefty $4000 profit off the whole enterprise, though…

BUT the good news is that Michigan Dems are finally beginning to close out a deal for a redo of the primaries…I was getting a little worried for a while.

This is probably one of the most intelligent threads on CC (no offense to the “What Are My Chances?” forum or anything…) and I fail to see how it is pretentious…? And has anyone noticed that the TASP thread appears to be dying without our vast intellect to nuture it?

the high school life forum contains actual problems/questions/concerns by high school students, parents, etc.

the stupid threads tend to be moderated rather quickly or die out due to lack of enthusiasm. for instance, beefs’ thread probably won’t last more than a couple days without intervention, mainly because it has caused a short epidemic of people forced to dig out their Fountains of Wayne CDs once more. this thread, however, appears to belong to a select few who transferred from another forum, share inside jokes and have no intent on letting this thread die without at least a few more replies.

if people are at a city hall meeting trying to bring up pertinent topics, and a group of people begin to talk determinedly about their laundry habits, people would ask for them to go someplace else to talk.
that place is the CC cafe, not the high school life forum. rambling is fine there. your 1st amendment rights are not at stake, just the collective patience of the majority.

edit:
“This is probably one of the most intelligent threads on CC (no offense to the “What Are My Chances?” forum or anything…) and I fail to see how it is pretentious…? And has anyone noticed that the TASP thread appears to be dying without our vast intellect to nuture it?”

this had better be sarcasm.

nice enderkin. very well said.
So let’s see…

Wink says “I fail to see how it is pretentious…?”

Well let’s take a look at this example:

Earlmadith says: “the first amendment and its subsequent interpretations…”
That looks like something excerpted from the fine print of a bureaucratic text. Writing, especially on internet forums, should simply convey your message or whatever you have to say. The phrase “subsequent interpretations” does not clarify anything. It is simply - that’s right - pretentious.

Wink, hopefully I have shed some light on what I mean by the term pretentious and how it applies to this thread.

It’s nice to see that the dronism and anti-intellectualism of the real High School Life is mirrored in its CC equivalent. Bonus points for accuracy, you capture all my worst days in middle school in such a compact package. The vocabulary criticism, the territorialism, the over-arching attitude of scorn mingled with uncertainty and frustration. If a mite of legal discourse is somehow offensive to you or your personal beliefs, then bravo. I feel at home here already; it’s just like High School Life or something. (sardonic)

As an addendum, I just want to say I <3 angry natives.

Oh god. I take it all back. That was so not chill.
Buds?

“It’s nice to see that the dronism and anti-intellectualism of the real High School Life is mirrored in its CC equivalent.”

We’re trying to promote the discussion/debate/argument of actual high school topics, both social and intellectual. That objective defies both ‘dronism’ and ‘anti-intellectualism’. Silly threads pop up now and again, but die just as quickly.

“vocabulary criticism”

Whoever deliberately combined alliteration with off-kilter word choice for the thread title is at fault. Phrases such as “oligarchic monopoly” have been used not to enhance the flow or cohesiveness of posts, but to create the impression of superior intelligence. To sum, insulting.

“If a mite of legal discourse is somehow offensive to you or your personal beliefs, then bravo.”

let me say again.
“your 1st amendment rights are not at stake, just the collective patience of the majority.”

“I feel at home here already; it’s just like High School Life or something. (sardonic)”

A more appropriate word would be sarcasm, since you (of course) are not supposed to be insinuating that you are upset–rather, you are aloof and in control of the situation.

edit: cross posted. i’ll relent. arguments stand as they are–no furtherance, no hard feelings. one condition–the CC cafe, please?

Jesus Christ that was the most pompous comeback I’ve ever received…

pompous, eh? coming 'round here, using them pretentious words…

Who could possibly be more pretentious than someone who actually /got into/ TASP? If the rejects were bad, it only follows that the acceptees are no less than the end of all civilization.

That’s not really a logical conclusion. In fact, that’s a baseless assertion!

For example, it is possible that some were rejected because they were overly pretentious.

Similarly, pretentiousness may be a psychological substitute for the fact that one did not get into TASP.

This is indubitable in itself, but you must take into consideration the fact that what you see here is a humbled representative of the species. Were I to have achieved what you have, the pompousness may very well end worlds. I can only imagine the swirling and boiling tempest in you soul. I feel it too sometimes, in between re-readings of Faulkner.

Okay, I’ll say Uncle. I’m contacting the mods to move it to the Cafe forum. Thank you enderkin for remaining civil and not just bashing us for no real good reason.

I stand by my word choice and opinions. “And subsequent interpretations” implies all the meanings given to the first amendment by supreme court decisions, by the way.

wow… never been to this part of CC before…wanders about aimlessly by the way, the TASP thread has only increased by 2 pages since we left :)

I found this nearly at the end of the second page. For shame, reject TASPers. For shame.
