Bumping up this thread because I wanted to encourage all of you on this thread to watch The Big Year. It was on cable last night, and I loved, loved, loved it!

Montegut, I loved The Big Year. I always take a few movies on DVD to watch with my elderly parents when I visit. They’ve always enjoyed bird watching (but not obsessively or “big year” style), so I took The Big Year on my last visit. It was a big hit with all of us!

^^^Agree, you don’t have to be an obsessive birder to enjoy this movie. Anyone who has ever taken a moment to listen to a bird sing in the trees will enjoy this one.

Robin update.
While I have seen mostly one robin ( the dad) playing in the pond, H has seen the whole family of five. Reportedly the three young ones were getting lessons on how to evaluate blueberries in my front yard. Unfortunately I waited a day too long to pick them, the bushes are decimated but with many dropped on the ground. Greedy little buggers.

The baby wrens in the bird house on my deck just left this morning. There were four and though they had a wobbly start, they all eventually made in off the deck and into the surrounding trees.

One of the parents came back to the house after a bit, perched on the little stand, looked in and then flew off.

They had been very noisy the last week and the parents were constantly flying in with food, so I’m looking forward to the quiet now.

The immature yellow crown night herons have left the nest. I know, because two of them were standing on the cable wire running behind my neighbor’s house. There’s nothing goofier looking than a two foot tall wading bird standing on top of a car, or a wire, or even up in a tree.

Got a wonderful treat yesterday while driving from my out of town job over the marshes. Saw a ROSEATE SPOONBILL!

This is a wonderful time of year for bird lovers!

I am in a new neck of the woods and see birds I don’t recognize and others that are familiar, like the robin red breasts from my childhood. Best yet, got told off by a chipmunk last week and thought the chirping it was making at first was a bird! Best new back yard beasty, a woodchuck. I can’t help myself repeating the old refrain, “how much wood does a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck does chuck wood.”
